Akaunting: The Open-Source Unicorn That Isn't

How a 10-person team built a 150K/month traffic juggernaut—and why it's not for everyone

In a world dominated by QuickBooks and Xero, Akaunting quietly built a 150K monthly visit fortress on the radical promise of 'free and open-source' accounting. But with a 1.7-star Trustpilot rating and just 10 employees, is this a grassroots revolution or a cautionary tale for founders?

"They've turned 'free software' into a 150K monthly traffic engine—without a sales team and with a product that users openly criticize."

The SEO-First Growth Playbook

Akaunting's traffic isn't accidental. They rank for 'accounting software' (17,890 monthly searches) and own their brand name (9,360 searches). With 52% of traffic from organic search, they've built a content moat around open-source accounting. Their blog, docs, and Spanish localization ('akaunting español') aren't just support—they're acquisition channels.

The Freemium Paradox

With 10 employees and ~$900K in revenue (estimated at ~$1M), each employee generates ~$90K. That's lean. But the 1.7-star Trustpilot rating reveals a crack: open-source doesn't mean 'easy.' Users love the price, but struggle with setup, support, and the learning curve. This is the classic open-source dilemma—free attracts users, but friction loses them.

The tech stack tells a story of pragmatism: jQuery and Tailwind CSS for speed, Google Analytics and Clarity for tracking, Cloudflare for protection. They're not chasing bleeding-edge tech—they're optimizing for reliability and cost. The lack of VC funding (N/A) means they're bootstrapped, which explains the 10-person team and the $0.9M revenue. They're not building for scale; they're building for sustainability.

  • Owns the 'free accounting software' niche with 5,500 monthly searches
  • 52% organic traffic proves SEO is their primary growth lever
  • Open-source model attracts developers and cost-conscious SMBs
  • 1.7-star Trustpilot rating exposes support and usability gaps
  • 10-person team suggests a focused, low-burn operation
No dedicated sales or enterprise support
Truly free and open-source (no hidden fees)
1.7-star rating suggests poor user experience
Strong SEO and organic growth engine
Limited brand recognition vs. QuickBooks/Xero
Active GitHub and social communities
Not suitable for complex accounting needs
Bootstrapped and sustainable model

The Open-Source Bet: Freedom vs. Friction

Akaunting proves you can build a 150K traffic business on free software—but at what cost? For founders, the lesson is clear: open-source can attract users, but only seamless UX and support will keep them. The real question isn't whether Akaunting can scale—it's whether it should.

Garbage

Garbage. I cancelled my account and removed my debit card, and a year after the initial charge, they charged my card 5 TIMES. Poor customer support, no phone number. Abysmal company. STAY AWAY!!!

Easy to use accounting software

The UI is very nice and tidy and leaves nothing to be desired. Furthermore, I like the ease of use, which is the basic idea behind the software. I firstly used the Cloud version and then switched to the On-Premise version. My experience with Akaunting so far has been very satisfactory.

Best accounting solution for small businesses

The initial reason for switching to Akaunting was because Wave stopped offering services to South Africa and QuickBooks was getting to expensive. Later I realized that this accounting software is very easy to use. You can start for free and upgrade from there which makes it the perfect solution for small businesses. The software gives you a view of everything you do through a simple dashboard.

Akaunting...Unreachable and unreliable

17/01/2026 Update 2 Mails sent on Jan.5th, 7th, 14th and 16th...and still no reaction. Its quite rude and disrespectull to neglect a customer that paid its license for a year. If you are reading this review and have a choice between Akaunting and another accounting software, definitely do NOT choose Akaunting. It's not free and even if pay alicense fee you are not sure that you will be able to acces your records. 09/01/2026 Update: Time needed to steal your money: 5 seconds Time needed to restore acces on a correct paid license: ???? We payed our renewal on oct. 7th by creditcard. When I try to login on dec. 8th I get a message that aou account has been diabled. We did not get an explanation so far. Pelas can you inform us what the reason is and enable our acces? Response: Unfortunately, I couldn't find any subscription associated with this email address or domain name. I don't get it...You receive payments and at once they don't have a clue who you are. I could reslove this myself. And it goes on...When I want to login with my credentials I have to give a two factor authentication. I am pretty shure i didn’t enable it but that won’t solve the problem. My login is not yet connected with an authenticator so I don’t get a QR-code I can scan and because I can no longer log in I can’t adjust the settings… Can you help me to resolve the problem? No reaction...but on jan. 5th...When I want to login with my credentials I have to give a two factor authentication. I am pretty shure i didn’t enable it but that won’t solve the problem. My login is not yet connected with an authenticator so I don’t get a QR-code I can scan and because I can no longer log in I can’t adjust the settings… Can you help me to resolve the problem? Untill now no reaction... We paid our annual fee and it seems that customer service from Akaunting doesn' give a damm that we are unable to login an do our accountancy. It seems to me that Akaunting is completely unreliable.

It advertises its self as "Free". Quickbooks is far cheaper!

It advertises its self as "Free" accounting software that's open source. It even advertises its self as "Double Entry". Talk about deceptive advertising. There is double entry! They are correct. It does offer double entry. HOWEVER, if you want double entry, it's an "App". An EXTRA feature that costs $72.00 per year or a lifetime license of $756.00 at the time of this review. The free is useless. Every little feature is an app that you have to pay for that is a recurring fee that is ridiculously expensive. Quickbooks is considerably cheaper. And, Quickbooks is one of the higher priced accounting software. I have decided for now to use FrappeBooks. Nice UI. Double Entry. Ability to attach receipts. Has an HR module, and a employee education module. It even has a complete ERP. I don't need all of that. My primary need was accounting. But, an HR module with FREE payroll would be nice which FrappeBook offers. For personal accounting, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use FireFly III. I'm still evaluating one of the oldest open-source software out there, GNUCash. I'm actually impressed with GNUCash. It has had a lot of updates. The UI is still a bit archaic. But, it has all the feature for both Small Business and Personal that most individuals need. What I do know is there is NO WAY I would ever use Akaunting and support that business with the deceptive advertising, and how they advertise as open-source, instead, they are one of the most greedy, expensive accounting software on the market for a small business. If the double entry feature was $6.00 A YEAR, or $72.00 lifetime, ABSOLUTELY. Tons of small business would use it. And, it keeps the Open-source software being updated, paying the developers that contribute. That's true open-source. This is just pure greed! And basic apps like backup is $72.00 a year, check printing ... just to print a check is $36.00 a year, to print 1099 forms it's $72.00 a year, WooCommerce, a basic API connection to import your sales is $84.00 a year. To create a budget costs $60.00 a year!!! If you look at the features of what QuickBooks $36.00 per month subscriptions offers which is $432.00 a year would cost over a thousand if NOT THOUSANDS each year for Akaunting. And compared to what FrappeBooks or GNUCash offers, you will save THOUSANDS! Just look at the Apple iOS App store review of Akaunting. It has a 1.6 star review at the time of this review, wow lol. 1.6 stars!!! Some of the worst apps don't even have that low of a score! That says it all. The Akaunting Android app was removed from the Google App store. It's no longer available. From what I can tell from the way back machine, in 2022, close to three years ago, it had 1.8 reviews from 104 users. Let me sum this up! If you're a small business and or even mid-business, if you want to burn, throw away your hard-earn income (cash), go buy some fireworks, at least you get a show for your money compared to throwing your money away on Akaunting!
