Chrome Extension Privacy

The TechList Chrome Extension ("Extension") is available on the Chrome Web Store. This section specifically addresses how the Extension collects, uses, and protects your data in compliance with Chrome Web Store policies.

Single Purpose

TechList detects and displays the technology stack used by websites you visit, including frameworks, analytics tools, CDNs, and other web technologies. It also shows website traffic and company information to help users understand the sites they browse.

Data Collected by the Extension

  • Website URLs: The URLs of websites you actively choose to analyze using the extension
  • Technology Detection Data: Information about technologies detected on analyzed websites
  • Cached Results: Temporarily stored detection results for performance

Data NOT Collected

  • Personal information or user accounts
  • Browsing history or activity
  • Passwords, form data, or authentication tokens
  • Financial or payment information
  • Personal communications or emails

Permission Justifications

The Extension requires certain browser permissions to function. Here is why each permission is necessary:

activeTab

Required to access the current tab's URL and content when you click the extension icon. This allows TechList to analyze the webpage's HTML, scripts, and meta tags to detect technologies. Only activated when you explicitly interact with the extension.

Host Permissions (all URLs)

Required to inject the content script that analyzes webpage source code, read HTTP response headers containing technology signatures, and fetch website resources for accurate identification. The extension only accesses websites when you actively use it to analyze a page.

scripting

Required to programmatically inject the technology detection script into webpages. This script analyzes the DOM, JavaScript global variables, and page source to identify technologies like React, Vue, WordPress, and Google Analytics.

storage

Required to cache detected technologies for performance, store user preferences, and temporarily store API responses. No personal user data is stored—only technical data about websites.

webRequest

Required to observe HTTP response headers from websites. Many technologies can only be detected through headers (e.g., server software, caching layers, security tools). This is passive observation only—no requests or responses are modified.

Remote Code Disclosure

The Extension does NOT execute remote code. All technology detection logic is bundled within the extension package. The extension makes API calls to techlist.ai solely to retrieve additional website metadata (traffic statistics, company information) and fetch technology icons and descriptions. These API calls return data only, not executable code. All detection algorithms run locally within the extension.

Data Sharing

Website URLs you analyze may be sent to the TechList API to enrich results with traffic and company data. No personal user data is shared with third parties. We do not sell any data collected through the extension.

Third-Party Links

Our website may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit.

Children's Privacy

Our services are not intended for individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
