Aro: The Silent Giant of Canadian Debt
How a 206-person operation quietly manages $47.6M in receivables
While tech startups chase viral growth, Aro has built a $47.6M empire in the unglamorous world of accounts receivable. Founded in 1993, this Canadian company operates in the shadows of finance, collecting what others owe. Their 206 employees aren't building apps—they're building a collection machine.
"Aro doesn't chase customers—it chases debtors. In a world obsessed with acquisition, they've mastered retention through force."
The Human Collection Machine
With 206 employees generating $47.6M, Aro operates at $231K revenue per employee—exceptional efficiency for a service business. Their leadership team reads like a debt collection playbook: Troy Moffatt (EVP Operations), Mark Hodgson (Senior Recovery Officer), and Clifford Toulme (Senior Recovery Officer). This isn't a tech company with a collections side hustle; it's a precision instrument for financial recovery.
The Organic Traffic Paradox
Here's the irony: Aro's website gets 13,072 monthly visits, with 52% coming organically. People aren't searching for Aro's services—they're searching for Aro itself. The top keywords reveal the story: 'aro' (23,540 monthly searches), 'aro inc' (1,060), and phone numbers like '514-322-1414'. This isn't marketing traffic; it's debtor traffic. People are being chased, and they're searching for who's chasing them.
The Trustpilot rating tells a brutal truth: 2.4/5 stars from 6 reviews. In collections, this isn't a bug—it's the business model. Aro's job isn't to be liked; it's to recover money. Their 1993 founding date means they've survived multiple economic cycles. They've seen the 2008 crash, the COVID downturn, and the current inflationary pressure. They're not just surviving; they're growing.
- Tech stack shows modernization: Vue.js + Tailwind CSS (not legacy jQuery)
- Phone number searches dominate traffic—debtors are calling back
- Toronto presence suggests B2B focus on major Canadian markets
- No funding rounds: Purely profitable, bootstrapped growth
The Unsexy Unicorn
Aro proves that boring businesses built on necessity outlast hype-driven startups. They're not chasing users—they're collecting from them. And they've been doing it since 1993.

Absolutely unlawful and irresponsible…
Absolutely unlawful and irresponsible handling of personal data. I have not lived in Canada since 2019, yet CIBC and their agent ARO continue to use my personal information without any legal basis — a clear violation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Despite having no valid business relationship, I am being contacted with pressure tactics and attempts to obtain additional data. All communication is unsolicited, non-consensual, and appears to rely on claims that are long expired, unverifiable, or entirely inaccurate. The approach is aggressive, opaque, and highly questionable from a data-protection standpoint. My trust is completely gone. I strongly advise any EU residents to exercise extreme caution when dealing with these institutions.
Hard to threaten someone who has nothing to loose.
From the moment they contacted me, this agency came out swinging with threats of "researching" me, clearly hoping to intimidate. Joke’s on them, I’m a veteran who’s already been shafted by the VAC (Veterans Affairs Canada), and I’ve got nothing left to lose. If their strategy is fear and pressure, they’re barking up the wrong tree. Instead of professionalism or basic decency, I got cold aggression and a lack of understanding of real hardship. Agencies like this prey on people who are already down. Sadly for them, I’ve already been through worse. To others dealing with this agency: know your rights. Document everything. Don’t let the scare tactics work.
Robocalls from this company to my cell…
Robocalls from this company to my cell phone. Kept calling for a Jennifer somebody who had my cell phone number at one point. Called me constantly every day. Phone them back explained who I was, and I asked them to remove my number from their system. If they ever call me again I will get a new phone number that they cannot call or guess.
