Atari's Ghost in the Machine
How the iconic gaming pioneer is surviving in 2024—barely.
Atari isn't dead, but it’s haunting the internet. With 604,544 monthly visits and a legacy brand that still commands search volume, the company is a paradox: a billion-dollar name running on fumes.
"Atari is a brand with more history than present, and more search traffic than sales."
The Nostalgia Economy
Atari’s traffic is dominated by the word 'Atari' itself—123,340 monthly searches. Users aren't looking for new games; they're looking for 'Atari 2600' (27,500 searches) and 'Rollercoaster Tycoon' (24,480 searches). The audience is nostalgic, not necessarily active.
The Revenue Reality
With $249.4M in revenue and 882 employees, Atari is generating roughly $282k per employee. For a gaming company, this is dangerously low—suggesting a heavy reliance on legacy licensing and hardware rather than high-margin software.
The site’s tech stack reveals a company trying to modernize on a budget. They're using Vite, Tailwind CSS, and PWA capabilities, yet the user experience feels dated. The Trustpilot rating of 1.8/5 is a glaring red flag, indicating fulfillment issues or customer dissatisfaction with modern Atari products.
- Traffic is 45% organic, driven by legacy keywords, not new releases.
- Direct traffic (41%) suggests a strong brand recall but weak discovery.
- Backlinks (4.2M) are massive, but authority isn't converting to trust (1.8/5 rating).
Atari is a museum that sells tickets.
The brand is alive, but the innovation is on pause.

SLOW delivery
SLOW delivery. Ordered intellivision sprint 12/29, 8 dollar shipping charge. Finally received 1/9. However did receive updates from both fedex and atari as delivery got close, which was appreciated.

My experience was on par. I think Atari should just stick to the retro market because it seems thats where they are excelling these days. I bought one of each version of the CX-78+ direct from Atari.com in November 2024. The wired unit came quickly, but the wireless unit was a pre-order that took a month to arrive. I couldn't be happier with both units though I think they should have tested their new 2600 compatible wireless controllers with the older systems, it makes some noises on the "Light Sixer" and the dongles don't fit Heavy Sixer 1977-1978 units due to not enough lead in. Thankfully both are livable and have workarounds. I don't think I ever got the point of the VCS (the new one, not the 1977-1992 original). Seems that's where most of their problems stem from reading other reviews. Not sure if they are affected by the California wildfires either. That could be a part of the ordering issues.

The arcade video game Tempest had a lot of potential to be made better by better graphics not altering it's basic graphics by adding faster levels more shapes better sounds from damage.
What didn't go wrong
What didn't go wrong? All I hear back is "we are sorry", "your feedback is valuable", and "we are taking this seriously for the future." You don't have a future. You need solutions in the present. Words don't do anything for upset and cheated customers. We speak money. I suggest starting with refund = the shipping cost. It was late for release anyway, as well as poorly packaged/protected for shipping. This company is done. You're done.
I ordered the MKKE
I ordered the MKKE. It was supposed to be released on 12/12/25. It was shipped on 12/16/25. However, only the game was shipped; the contents of the Collector’s Edition will not be shipped until May. That means I now have to pay customs duties and the handling fee twice. This is an absolute disgrace. It’s basically fraud. It’s just difficult to sue Atari from Germany. This was the last time I bought a product from Atari, and I hereby warn everyone against buying anything from Atari. One of the worst companies on this planet. Shame on you, Atari.
