The Boxcryptor Shutdown: A Privacy Parable
Analyzing the fall of a once-promising encryption startup through its digital ghost
Boxcryptor.com is a digital ghost ship, still drawing traffic but displaying only a single, ominous word: 'Goodbye.' This isn't a startup story about explosive growth—it's a forensic audit of a company that quietly vanished after selling to a competitor, leaving behind a trail of frustrated users and a $0.8M revenue ceiling.
"When your H1 tag is 'Goodbye,' you've already lost the narrative—your product is now a cautionary tale, not a tool."
The Abandoned User Base
With 14,508 monthly visits, Boxcryptor still attracts a loyal, confused user base. The 44% organic traffic share suggests people are searching for a product that no longer exists—likely former users trying to reinstall or troubleshoot. The 42% direct traffic is even more telling: these are power users who bookmarked the site, now hitting a digital wall. This isn't active traffic; it's residual pain.
The Acquisition Death Spiral
Boxcryptor's trajectory is a classic cautionary tale: a small team (10 employees) with niche encryption tech, acquired by a larger player (likely Dropbox or similar), and subsequently sunset. The $0.8M revenue suggests a tool with passionate but limited B2B/SMB adoption. The 1.9/5 Trustpilot rating (13 reviews) indicates user revolt post-acquisition—likely due to price hikes, feature removal, or forced migration.
The keyword data reveals the ghost's footprint. Top queries like 'boxcryptor retirement' (160 monthly searches) and 'boxcryptor instaler' (90 monthly) are digital cries for help. Users aren't looking for alternatives; they're looking for the original tool. The misspelling 'boxycriptor' (170 monthly) shows brand equity was built but not leveraged. This is a brand that died before its time.
- The 'Goodbye' H1 tag is a blunt, final statement—no migration guide, no alternative suggestions, just an exit.
- Fastly CDN usage suggests the site is still technically live but functionally dead, a zombie asset.
- Top countries are undefined (likely due to anonymized data), but the traffic pattern suggests global, not regional, adoption.
- The 1.9-star Trustpilot rating is a scarlet letter—users feel betrayed, not just inconvenienced.
Boxcryptor is a tombstone, not a launchpad.
For founders: A $0.8M revenue ceiling with a 1.9-star rating means you're not building a moat—you're building a target for acquisition and extinction.

excellent!
Thank you Boxcryptor for your good service, now i can sleep with out worrying that my data on the cloud is not encrypted.
Good idea but lags in UI and guides
Simply to annoying for me to use - the guide and tutorials was more or less useless - if the program was easy and had some "warnings" of the consequences of what would happen then it might be nice. I installed the desktop app, it opens and 5-6 buttons appear, no menu, no settings, none with the description of what I wanted to do - secure a folder - I could encrypt a file and decrypt a folder. And some other options that did not look like something I would need Looked around some guides. Right click on the file/folder..... The right click encrypt folder thing/file was not presence. O Some other useless thing - open as boxcrypter, then something weird happen - what the f473h was that. Ok, finally found out that I could use the encrypt file in the app...Why didnt they write Encrypt file/folder in first place.... ok got it. Then it took like forever to "encrypt" the files. THey could have warned that the actual encryption would take a half day if a lot stuff in the folder. (actually not that much, but a bit) Ok finally it was encrypted. I have no idea what encryption is but expected some password protection for the folder - but no! They had actually encrypted/changed all the files. So now I had both my normal folder and an " encrypted copy" of the folder and then dropbox of course started upload all the new encrypted files to dropbox. That was gonna take all night.... I could not open anything in the encrypted folder - again looking for tutorials...... no help to find - i was supposed to be able to open the files. I gave up for now let the dropbox upload the new files all night, and try look at it again next day Next day I could open files directly in the folder like some word documents - but not all files where happy - some files like XML files I store a lot password in got a "windows can not open this file" Ok, that was it. I uninstalled boxcryptor and deleted the new encrypted folder.
