CipherTrace: The Ghost in the Machine of Crypto
How a $23M company monitors the invisible economy, and why its silence speaks volumes.
In an industry obsessed with transparency, CipherTrace operates in the shadows. While crypto startups shout about decentralization, this $23M revenue company quietly audits the blockchain, chasing the money trail for governments and banks. But with zero web traffic and a 2.3-star rating, the question isn't just what they do—it's why they remain so opaque.
"They aren't building products for the crypto masses—they're building surveillance tools for the financial establishment."
The Anti-Crypto Crypto Company
CipherTrace sits at a fascinating paradox: they profit from the crypto ecosystem while enabling its regulation. With David Jevans (a veteran in cybercrime) at the helm, their DNA is rooted in traditional finance security, not decentralized ideals. Their 114 employees aren't coding for retail traders; they're building compliance APIs for banks terrified of illicit funds. This isn't a startup—it's a legacy security firm adapted for the blockchain era.
The Silent Growth Engine
Despite having zero organic web traffic (literally 0 monthly visits), CipherTrace has raised $45.1M and generates $23.3M in revenue. How? By selling directly to institutions who don't Google 'crypto compliance.' Their growth is invisible on the open web but deeply entrenched in government contracts and banking partnerships. The 'ciphertrace' keyword sees 680 monthly searches, but these aren't their customers—they're likely researchers or curious onlookers. Their real clients are the ones who pick up the phone.
The 2.3-star rating on Trustpilot (from 39 reviews) is telling. For a B2B enterprise, public reviews often come from disgruntled former employees or partners, not customers. It suggests internal friction or a culture clash between traditional finance rigidity and crypto's agility. Yet, their revenue and funding prove they're solving a critical pain point: regulatory compliance in a lawless frontier.
- Revenue-First, Marketing-Last: Zero web traffic but $23M+ revenue signals a sales-driven, enterprise-focused model.
- The Trustpilot Paradox: Low public rating vs. strong funding highlights the gap between internal culture and external perception.
- Invisible Infrastructure: They power the backend of crypto regulation without needing brand recognition among retail users.
CipherTrace isn't a crypto company—it's a financial surveillance firm in a blockchain shell.
For founders and investors, the lesson is clear: In regulated industries, sometimes the most valuable businesses are the ones you never hear about.

This company called me to say that they could recover my stolen money. They did ask me to use Anydesk but I did not show them my bank account. They did ask me to transfer $100 to my Koho account which I did after the phone call. Immediately after speaking to their representative named Noah Williams, I received a call from my bank to say there was some suspicious activity on my account. Apparently $1500 was e-transferred to somebody with the email name richardpenner0@gmail.*** They also tried to send another $263 to the same address but that one did not go through. I am now completely broke and cannot pay my rent or buy food. I am an old retired person and I will probably be l living on the street very soon. The theft was more than a month’s income. I did contact them and they claimed that that they know nothing about the theft, but I’m sure that they were involved.
