Dribbleup: The $5.2M Gamble on Connected Sports
How a 41-person team built a hardware + software sports empire from a single smart ball
While tech giants chase AI and enterprise SaaS, Dribbleup quietly built a $5.2M business selling smart sports equipment to parents. It's a masterclass in hardware-as-a-service, but the real story is in the numbers that don't add up.
"The most telling metric isn't their revenue—it's that 93% of their traffic comes from a single undefined country. This isn't a global brand; it's a regional powerhouse with a global ambition."
The Parent Trap (In a Good Way)
Dribbleup's genius is targeting the guilt-driven parent. Their 40% discount hook for new customers isn't about sports—it's about solving the 'my kid needs screen time alternatives' problem. With 42% organic search traffic, they've mastered SEO for 'perfect gifts for kids' and 'dribble up soccer ball,' capturing purchase intent at the exact moment parents are desperate for solutions. The 3.6/5 Trustpilot rating with 284 reviews suggests a product that delivers just enough value to avoid refunds, but not enough to create evangelists.
The Hardware-Software Flywheel
Here's where Dribbleup gets interesting: they're not just selling balls. They're selling a connected experience. With tech stack mentions like Next.js, Amazon S3, and Google Analytics, they've built a platform where the hardware (smart ball) is just the entry point. The real moat is the data layer and engagement loop. But with only 41 employees, they're dangerously thin on engineering bandwidth. Their careers page routes to Workable, not a careers page—suggesting they're hiring contractors, not building long-term IP.
The funding gap is telling. No public funding rounds means either they're bootstrapped (unlikely at $5.2M revenue) or they've taken strategic investment that hasn't been disclosed. The CEO Eric Forkosh and Head Digital Ben Paster are likely running a lean operation where marketing (Head of Marketing Matthew Vittorio) drives the bus, and engineering is a cost center to be minimized. The 48% direct traffic suggests strong brand recall—parents remember Dribbleup when they need gifts—but it's also a vulnerability. If they're not building organic search moats beyond branded keywords, they're one algorithm update away from trouble.
- Smart ball hardware creates a physical lock-in (you can't switch brands without buying new equipment)
- The 40% discount hook is aggressive—likely sacrificing margin for customer acquisition
- Trustpilot rating of 3.6/5 is the 'good enough' zone for a hardware product
- 42% organic traffic is healthy but dominated by branded terms ('dribbleup', 'dribble up')
The $5.2M Question: Is This a Startup or a Lifestyle Business?
Dribbleup has found product-market fit, but with 41 employees and no public funding, they're either extremely efficient or deliberately staying small. For investors, this is a 'show me the growth' story. For founders, it's a blueprint for building a hardware-enabled software business without venture capital noise.

Great for all ages and abilities
We just got dribble up this past week and the boys are loving it! We got it for the twins (age 10) but I love that there are up to 6 accounts included so my 5 year old can join in the fun, too! He’s spent 5 years in the bleachers watching his brothers and now it’s his turn! The bigs are now the coaches and cheerleaders for him too.
This is such a great story. We love hearing how the whole family is getting involved, especially that your youngest now gets his turn to play. Thank you for sharing this and for being part of the Dribbleup community.
We are just getting started with…
We are just getting started with Dribble Up but loving it so far. Our son was very excited to pass a few levels and we are anxious to see how he grows adding this into his routine!
That’s great to hear. We love the early wins, and it’s awesome that your son is already moving through levels. Thanks for sharing, and we’re excited to be part of his progress as he continues to grow.
Got the DU soccer ball for my son for…
Got the DU soccer ball for my son for x-mas. We traveled for the holiday and somehow misplaced the access code card. I emailed DU not expecting a response until the next week. I was shocked when they responded within 5 minutes. Not with a thank you for your email, but with the access code and directions to setup the account. On top of that, my son loves it. I bought a different soccer app that he never liked because there is no interactive instruction or feedback. Can’t wait to see his ball handling improve. LOVE LOVE LOVE DU!!!
We love hearing this. We’re glad our team could jump in quickly and that your son is enjoying the experience. Thanks so much for the support and enthusiasm.
