Makespace: The $142M Bet on a Broken Promise
A deep dive into why a well-funded storage startup is losing the trust war
Makespace.com positions itself as the modern solution to moving and storage, but with a 1.3/5 Trustpilot rating and only 2,400 monthly visitors, it's a case study in how funding doesn't equal product-market fit. The company raised $142.6M but struggles to attract just 2,400 monthly visitors.
"When your Trustpilot rating is worse than most airlines, you're not solving a storage problem—you're creating a trust crisis."
The Traffic Paradox
Makespace's traffic numbers reveal a stark reality: 2,409 monthly visits for a company with $142.6M in funding is alarming. For context, that's roughly 0.00017% of their total funding converted to monthly visitors. With 47% direct traffic and only 34% organic search, it suggests poor SEO strategy and weak brand recall. The fact that 'makespace' only gets 600 monthly searches indicates the brand has failed to become a category-defining term, unlike 'U-Haul' or 'Public Storage.'
The Trust Deficit
A 1.3/5 rating from 131 reviews is catastrophic for a consumer-facing service. In the storage industry, trust is everything—you're literally holding people's belongings. This rating suggests systemic issues in service quality, communication, or pricing transparency. For founders, this is a masterclass in how operational failures can destroy brand equity faster than marketing can build it.
The company's tech stack—AWS CloudFront, Cloudflare, FullStory, Sentry—reveals a modern infrastructure, but technology alone doesn't solve the human problems of moving and storage. Their 88 employees generate $12.3M in revenue, which is efficient but not scalable. The question isn't about their tech; it's about their ability to execute on the ground where it matters most.
- Funding ≠ Product-Market Fit: $142.6M can't mask a 1.3/5 rating
- SEO is an afterthought: Only 34% organic traffic for a consumer brand
- Brand recall is weak: 'Makespace' isn't a verb yet
- Operational execution is the real bottleneck
The Storage War Isn't Won with Code
Makespace proves that in logistics, execution beats funding every single time. Their 1.3/5 rating is a warning siren for every startup that thinks technology alone can disrupt physical services.

DELIVERY WENT SMOOTHLY
My 4 boxes were delivered in the timeframe given me. I had packed the boxes myself and when they were returned they were in tact, no damage to the boxes. The delivery went smoothly and the drivers were very nice. I received emails and text messages as reminders, especially on the delivery day. There were texts not only as a reminder but also when the drivers were on their way. I also called to prorate the cost of the month I paid and it was done in minutes. I received an email on the refund before I was off the phone. For my experience Make Space did a great job for me and I would use them again if needed.
Hi Andrea, Thank you for sharing your experience with your recent appointment! We're always here for your storage needs! All the best, The MakeSpace Team
MakeSpace is unreliable, and your property is unaccessible
My initial experience with MakeSpace was pretty good, when they picked up my items. However, upon trying to get access to my property stored with MakeSpace, I was told there would be a month-long delay -- and I'd be charged for the extra time. At no point has MakeSpace indicated such long delays. Their TOS indicates they aim to return property within 72 hours of requests, and my initial conversations with sales and customer support echoed that. But now, without any prior warning (like an email notification, for example) I'm told that I'm unable to access my own property for over a month. This has led me to lose significant money as I have no access to my own furniture and other items, which I needed within a matter of a couple of weeks -- not a month. Considering how unreliable this company is, and the fact they take no responsibility for their failure to provide reasonable service, I recommend using a regular storage company where you have control over access to your unit.
Hi Sean, We’re sorry to hear about your frustrations with our current availability. We do have it stated in our Help Center to expect a longer delivery lead time due to higher customer demand. We made reasonable efforts to check with our Operations team for a fit in, and gave a sizable compensation of 2 months off of storage ($617) to help with the inconveniences as an exception regarding unavailability. Take care, The MakeSpace Team
Not worth the money
My girlfriend and I recently moved into an apartment together. We had her items (I am posting this review for her) in MakeSpace storage for a few months while we were between apartments. I am giving this 2 stars because the process is convenient (their storage bags that go into boxes, picking it up, delivering it to you, etc) and the movers are very nice. Aside from that, I would not recommend MakeSpace to anyone. I have compiled a list of my reasons below. Items broken: - 2+ mugs - 5+ glasses - glass oil burner - THE TV IS COMPLETELY SHATTERED - the bed frame I would like to note that all items mentioned were packaged carefully and in boxes marked fragile, but obviously that didn’t matter. It’s also worth noting that for items to be eligible under insurance (from my understanding) they need to not be fragile. What is the point of insurance if you can’t insure your fragile items? Other items: - missing our vacuum - missing two of the couch feet - when we got our (first) delivery, they somehow managed to forget the couch and the bed frame, meaning we needed to set up a second delivery for the next day - missing parts from the bed frame So overall, the process is ingenious. However, MakeSpace absolutely needs to work on the execution. We will not be using their services again. Buyer beware. EDIT: Not sure how to respond to MakeSpace’s reply, so I’m putting it in here — Nikola Jelinkova, nikolaj94@yahoo
Hi Karlee, I’m so sorry to hear your MakeSpace experience hasn’t lived up to the high standards we’re working tirelessly to deliver. Taking the best care of our customers' items is always our top priority, and it's disappointing to hear that your experience hasn't fully reflected this distinction. Fragile items are specifically covered under our Basic Protection Plan, at 60 cents per pound. The coverage can be limited based on the fragile nature of the item. However, customers are still welcome to file a claim for fragile items. A member of our Claims team will be reaching out to file a claim for these items shortly. Take care, The MakeSpace Team
Sold my unit without notice, absurd fees. Rent elsewhere
Make Space Storage Sundial. Storage is for four weeks(be warned), increased my monthly fee after six months as part of the “yearly increase”($24). I became behind in payments after being told (I called the local number)I was paid up for another 3 months (apparently my fault they lied/were wrong) however I paid in full for them to continue to hold a double lock because the next day the new bill was DUE(usually leaving 21 days before a double lock) and wouldn’t allow me into my unit. I was warned it would go to collections (after 1.5 months)with my response of pleading to be let in to sell some of my belongings to pay off rental fees were ignored. They claimed to have made payment arrangements but never did, wouldn’t allow anything but a full payment(idiotic and unjust). Collections NEVER CONTACTED ME and sold my unit. My whole life was in that unit, my families passed down priceless objects, my personal and business tools, kids belongings and memoirs, leisure toys and basically everything to fill an average apartment(+2teens)all gone with out any word from collections. They have absurd fees 3,7 and 15 days past due on top of the billing cycle not lining up. They were quick to tell me I was passed due(and how many times over the near 3 years of renting) but when I paid 1 or 2 months in advance it was never noted! Short story long, rent from somebody else. Somebody that cares, maybe somebody providing more than a security light unseen from most units after dark(9pm yearly) or that has a gate that actually works and not left open for the winter. By owing $1200 (would have been paid quickly) I’ve lost nearly $35k plus the priceless family heirlooms I’ll never get back. Great business structure
Scam, avoid at all costs
Whatever this service is, it isn't a job placement service for the disabled. Misleading branding, VERY misleading information on their website. Avoid at all costs. It's a wonder they're not shut down for ADA violations because they are definitely NOT ADA compliant. Shameful and disgusting, I will be filing formal reports for this "service".
