Mammut: The 160-Year-Old Dinosaur That Won't Die
How a Swiss alpine brand is crushing digital while its legacy stores crumble
Mammut isn't just selling jackets—it's selling a Swiss-engineered promise that you won't freeze to death on a mountain. With 1.5M monthly visitors and $196M in revenue, this 162-year-old brand has somehow outmaneuvered flashier startups by doubling down on what actually matters: gear that works when your life depends on it.
"While fashion brands chase trends, Mammut chases safety certifications—and that's why they'll outlast them all."
The Trust Paradox
Here's the brutal truth: Mammut's 1.9/5 Trustpilot rating (from 174 reviews) screams 'e-commerce nightmare,' yet their traffic keeps climbing. Why? Because when you're dangling off a cliff, you don't care about checkout UX—you care that the rope won't snap. Their 43% direct traffic proves customers type 'mammut.com' directly, bypassing Google entirely. That's not brand loyalty; that's survival instinct encoded in Swiss engineering.
The SEO Moat
Mammut dominates 110,640 monthly searches for 'mammut' alone—more than their entire product catalog could handle. They rank for 'mammut jacket' (4,530 searches) and 'mammut down jacket' (900 searches) because they've spent decades building backlinks (354,706 and counting). While DTC startups burn cash on ads, Mammut owns the search results page. That's not marketing; that's digital real estate hoarding.
The tech stack reveals their strategy: Next.js for speed, PWA for offline capability (critical in the mountains), and Google Analytics to track every crampon click. They're not building a fashion site—they're building a survival tool portal. The 13 technologies detected include Datadog RUM and Zendesk, suggesting they're obsessed with performance monitoring even if customer service complaints pile up.
- 693 employees generate $196M revenue = $284K per employee (exceptional efficiency)
- Swiss design since 1862 isn't a slogan—it's a patent portfolio
- Avalanche gear sits alongside jackets, creating a 'complete survival kit' basket
- Athlete-tested means real climbers, not Instagram influencers
The Lesson for Founders
Mammut proves that when your product literally saves lives, you don't need to optimize for conversion—you optimize for trust. Their 160-year head start means every new 'disruptor' is just a speed bump. The real question isn't how Mammut survives digital transformation—it's whether any startup can ever catch up when the moat is measured in glaciers, not code.

Value for money
Pricy, but be sure the quality is the best for outdoor equriment
Sold a 6 year old climbing rope instead of a new rope.
Ordered a new rope from the Australia branch of this company as that is where mammut.com directed me. Unfortunately after buying a new climbing rope from there, they sent me a 'new' rope that was actually over 6 years old from manufacture date. This was not a clearance item and was meant to be a new rope. Ropes have limited useful life and are only meant to be stored for 5 years maximum without use. To pass off a 6 year old rope as new is appalling for a safety item we put our life on. Their customer service suggests I return the rope at my cost and they would give me a store credit. Totally unacceptable. I'm a long time buyer of many Mammut ropes but this might be the last if that is how they value customers.
No refund!
I have returned multiple items back to Mammut UK, and I haven’t get refunded for £1500 for over 8 weeks, which is about 2 months! I contacted the customer service every other two days, but got very passive responses that they will forward my cases to relevant department. £1500 is a massive amount! Please avoid purchase anything from this company even though the quality is not bad.
Problems with customer service
I tried to return an item but then the re-sent it to me. So I re-returned it and haven’t heard from them since. It’s been now 5 weeks and services are not responding to my mails anymore. It’s more than two months since I first tried to return the item and I still haven’t gotten my money back.
Worst shoes I’ve ever owned – Mammut Ducan II Low GTX (Men, Black)
I regret ever buying these shoes. After a single forest walk, the front of the right shoe got punctured, making the Gore-Tex lining completely useless against rain. I had to tape the shoe with duct tape just to keep going. It only got worse from there: • After 700 km of walking, the soles were already heavily worn down. • After first forest walk there was a puncture that made Gore-Tex useless. • By 1500 km, the shoes were outright dangerous — I was slipping on most surfaces. • Shortly after, the sole of the other shoe wore through completely, leaving a hole at the bottom front and destroying the waterproofing on the left shoe as well. To make matters worse, Mammut’s customer support was slow, unhelpful, and frustrating. It took me 3 months of back-and-forth just to get back 60% of the purchase price. This was the most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever bought, and also the worst. They lasted barely 7 months before becoming unusable. For comparison: my old Salomon shoes lasted 6 years and over 5000 km, cost half the price, and are still in better condition today. Mammut’s quality has become an abomination — worse than Decathlon, despite charging a premium price. Honestly, I don’t think I will ever trust Mammut again. Enshitification at its finest.
