MaxSold: The 14-Day Liquidation Machine
How a Canadian auction platform turned estate sales into a $62.5M operation
MaxSold isn't selling you a product—it's selling you a timeline. The promise is brutally simple: sell everything in 14 days. This isn't e-commerce; it's liquidation-as-a-service, and it's scaling faster than most traditional retailers.
"When you own the liquidation market, you don't compete with eBay—you become the estate sale industry's operating system."
The Growth Flywheel
With 2.26M monthly visits and 76% direct traffic, MaxSold has achieved something rare: customers who don't browse—they transact. The 19% organic search traffic is just noise; the real signal is the direct traffic. These aren't comparison shoppers; they're executors, estate lawyers, and downsizing boomers who need a problem solved yesterday. The 114K backlinks aren't from SEO farms—they're from local auction houses, moving companies, and funeral homes that have become distribution partners.
The Trust Paradox
Here's the contradiction that should worry founders: MaxSold has 1,339 Trustpilot reviews at 2.3 stars. That's not a bug—it's a feature of their model. They're not selling happiness; they're selling certainty. When you're liquidating a loved one's estate, you don't need a 5-star experience. You need the stuff gone in two weeks. The low rating reflects the emotional weight of the transaction, not operational failure. It's a brutal business where the customer is often grieving, and the product is literally their past.
The tech stack tells the story of a company scaling faster than its infrastructure can handle. Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, Ant Design, and Material UI all detected—this isn't a unified design system; it's technical debt accumulated through rapid growth. PostHog for analytics, Zendesk for support, PWA for mobile—every tool screams 'move fast and patch later.' With 256 employees generating $62.5M, that's $244K revenue per employee—efficient, but the patchwork tech suggests they're held together by duct tape and determination.
- Owns the liquidation timeline: 14 days from listing to final sale
- 76% direct traffic shows established brand recall in a fragmented market
- Geographic dominance in Canada with expansion into US markets (CT, Philly, Richmond Hill)
- Turns estate sales into a subscription-like revenue stream for partners
The Unsexy Billion-Dollar Play
MaxSold proves the most valuable businesses solve problems no one wants to think about. They're not building a marketplace—they're building the infrastructure for America's demographic shift. When 10,000 boomers retire daily, someone has to liquidate their estates. MaxSold just happens to be that someone.

I was a buyer for a Maxsold auction
I was a buyer for a Maxsold auction. I love the idea, but the percent added on to the base bid was just too high. With their cut and taxes (for some reason? why taxes when we are buying used from another person?) it wound up being almost 25% additional cost on top. If you are bidding a small amount or get something for a super low price, it's not too bad. But those costs really, really add up, and it isn't the seller making that money either. From what I gather from other reviews as well, the seller has to pay a lot off the top of their earnings as well. I won't do this again, it just isn't worth it.
Don't Believe What You Read! Buyer Beware!!
June 2025 I bid on and won a "new" (as described on the website) compact telescope. I drove out to Scarborough to pick it up and needed to be quick to get back as my wife needed the car. I picked up what looked like a new package and took it home. The next day I unpacked the box to find the telescope was missing pieces and the scope itself was misaligned so did not function. I contac ted MaxSold and was told that since I did not make a complaint at the pick up they would not refund my purchase. The did not address the incorrect statement that led to me buying the telescope in the first place. I have purchased a lot of things on this site, some good, some not so much but I always felt the descriptions were fair. I will never use this site again.
Change pick up date
Change pick up date when i was on location already, i coulnt make it on the new date, asked for shipping but the just BS that main person made a mistake, is not the first time, im done with this people
Garbage company
Garbage company. Just bought VarageSale and has been stealing money from me without any customer support. Paid for premium for months but once the company changed hands they kept taking the money but denied service. Can't get a hold of anyone there beyond the first AI message. I've tried to reach someone who can help 10 times now, empty void. Do NOT pay this company any money, just use free services if anything.
Very disappointing- I missed pick up…
Very disappointing- I missed pick up due to the confusion by the affordable shipping company . All I was asking is for an alternative pickup arrangement - but the customer service don’t want to do there job. They charge 18% buyer’s premium which is totally steal + 13% Tax = 31% on top of your each bid , and most items have issues - they have the worst terms and conditions and at the end They put everything on buyer - then what do you charge 18% premium for ?? That’s insane : stay away- I would say run - I spent over 8k and learnt the lesson hard way, If your item is below $20 - no refund - but still they will keep your $20+ (18% premium + 13% tax ) . Total steal . A big SCAM
