Safeway.com: The $10B Digital Grocery Giant
A data-driven analysis of America's grocery legacy and its digital future
Safeway.com isn't just a website—it's a digital fortress built on 13.7 million monthly visits and 61% direct traffic. While competitors chase viral growth, Safeway leverages decades of brand loyalty to dominate grocery e-commerce.
"In grocery e-commerce, trust beats virality every time—Safeway's 61% direct traffic proves it."
The Loyalist Playbook
Safeway's traffic profile reveals a masterclass in customer retention. With 61% direct traffic (nearly double organic search), they've built a moat where customers type 'safeway.com' directly rather than searching. This isn't accidental—it's the result of decades of physical store presence creating digital loyalty. The 550K monthly searches for 'safeway' alone show brand recognition that pure-play e-commerce competitors can't buy.
The Data Goldmine
With 2.27 million backlinks and 31% organic search traffic, Safeway's SEO strategy is surprisingly conservative for its size. They rank for 'safeway weekly ad' (25K searches) and 'safeway pharmacy' (36K searches)—high-intent, low-competition keywords. This suggests a focus on utility over virality. The real opportunity? 'Safeway Just For You' only gets 670 monthly searches despite being their personalization engine. That's a massive untapped growth lever.
The Trustpilot score of 1.8/5 from 353 reviews is a stark warning. For a $10B+ revenue company, this indicates serious operational friction in the digital experience. While their physical stores maintain brand equity, the website is clearly struggling with execution—likely in delivery reliability, customer service, or UI/UX. This gap between brand strength and digital satisfaction is where agile competitors can strike.
- 61% direct traffic = unparalleled brand loyalty
- 2.2M backlinks show strong domain authority
- Pharmacy searches (36K/month) are under-monetized
- Trustpilot 1.8/5 reveals critical UX gaps
Safeway's Digital Crossroads
The 61% direct traffic is a fortress, but the 1.8/5 Trustpilot score is a warning flare. For investors, Safeway represents a classic legacy brand with digital potential—if they can bridge the gap between physical loyalty and online execution.

I use Safeway.com and Drive Up and Go often
I use Safeway.com weekly to find and order my groceries. As a person who has difficulty with my mobility I sure appreciate the drive up and go. I can almost 100% handle all issues with groceries on my own this way. The workers are kind and helpful and I get exactly what I request 98% of the time. Mistakes are infrequent and any mistake is fixed by Safeway through chat and reimbursements to my bank card. I highly recommend the Safeway Drive Up and Go.
Chris P at Aloha Safeway needs to be fired!
I give Safeway five stars because I’ve been shopping with them for years and years owever, I give the guy in the deli a negative one. They need to get rid of this employee. He is not a keeper. His name is Chris P. I approached the deli to get a whole chicken on sale for 599 my dog loves them and so do I. I could see that he was busy, but I just wanted to know where the whole chickens were so I kind of in a loud voice said whole chickens? and then he looked up at me and he said you’ll have to wait So I wait two or three minutes no other workers around I don’t see the chickens anywhere around and then I said louder pretty loud. I just need a whole chicken and he pretended he couldn’t hear me again. So by the time that he got done doing whatever he was doing a good 6 -8 minutes went by When he finally gets done and approaches the counter. I’m pretty mad and I just asked his name and he quickly covered up his name badge and told me it was none of my business. I said I would just like to have your name please. He said you can get the hell out of the store if you don’t like it you’re not getting my name what are you gonna do about it you can leave the store. I said I think not and said you need to talk to me like I’m a customer. I’ll talk to you how I want. I said let me tell you what I’ve been shopping in the store for 20 years. You will not be kicking me out of the store as I push the cart towards the cashiers. Red hot when I get to the cashier I am livid. Never did get to ask for my chicken, but I did tell the cashier scanning about my experience and they quickly told me he is a problem. He did the same thing to me the other day on my lunch hour as it is, we don’t get time we have to hurry, but he made me wait over five minutes and I said that’s exactly what he did to me, but he was very rude when I asked him his name and covered up his name badge and told me to leave the store. Well meanwhile, the guy had called Customer Service to actually complain about me. That lady had had experience with him before because she quickly came over to me, told the cashier to give me $10 off the order and profusely apologize to me I was still shaking. I showed her my hand and I said I have not been this pissed off in a long time a lot of years and she said I am so so sorry. I’m taking this to my manager tomorrow and this will be dealt with. Meanwhile, she was able to get me my chicken:) That man needs to be fired. Safeway don’t hire angry in adequate non-customer service people it’s killing your business and it’s hurting your customers. What happened tonight hurt me it was so uncalled for it was disgusting. I love Safeway and I do still give you five stars because I know normally that would never happen please get rid of the guy and other guys like him your WAY BETTER THAN THAT.
Safeway is the best
I like the Safeway supermarket on Balto. national Pike. Even when they are busy, the staff greet you with a pleasant smile.
Safeway in goodyear AZ is the best…
Safeway in goodyear AZ is the best location in the state. NOW there are very bad locations in Phoenix AZ. so I travel a few extra miles out of my way to come here. The staff is warm and friendly. Good prices and quality items.
Glasgow Delaware location if Safeway
They definitely need new management ay least at tge one I go to in Peoples Plaza Delaware. Their shelves are unstocked, expired items left on shelves for weeks sometimes and their choices have become scarce. This used to be a great store so not sure what went wrong. Their prices are not competitive either.
