The $62M Salt Monopoly You've Never Heard Of
How SaltWorks dominates artisan sea salts while flying under the radar
In the vast desert of commodity food brands, SaltWorks has quietly built a $62M empire by convincing America that salt is a luxury ingredient. With 209 employees and the world's largest selection of artisan sea salts, they're not selling seasoning—they're selling a culinary experience.
"They've turned table salt into a premium product category—while most food brands fight on price, SaltWorks wins on curation."
The Discovery Engine Problem
Here's the contradiction: 38% of their traffic comes from organic search, yet they rank for only 300+ monthly searches for 'saltworks'—their own brand name. The real opportunity lies in high-volume keywords like 'kosher salt' (37K monthly searches) where they're competing for visibility, not converting traffic. They're a destination brand, not a discovery brand.
The Invisible Customer Base
With 78.2% of traffic marked 'undefined' in their analytics, SaltWorks has a blind spot in customer segmentation. This isn't just a data issue—it's a strategic one. Are they selling to home cooks, professional chefs, or food manufacturers? The ambiguity suggests they're serving everyone and reaching no one specifically. Their 4/5 Trustpilot rating from just 3 reviews confirms they're not exactly viral.
What makes SaltWorks unique is their vertical integration: they're not just reselling salt, they're sourcing and branding it. Their tech stack (jQuery, Tailwind, Bootstrap) is surprisingly dated for a $62M company, suggesting they've prioritized product over platform. But that's also their weakness—direct traffic (56%) dominates, meaning they're not building a digital moat, just maintaining a loyal (but limited) customer base.
- They own the 'artisan salt' narrative but haven't scaled digital discovery
- Revenue is impressive, but traffic quality suggests B2B wholesale dominates over DTC
- Their keyword strategy is defensive (brand terms) rather than offensive (category terms)
- The tech stack is functional but not future-proof for e-commerce growth
The Salt Paradox
SaltWorks proves you can build a $62M business by being the best at something everyone needs, but they're leaving millions on the table by not owning the digital conversation around salt. For a company with this revenue, their online presence is surprisingly modest—suggesting either brilliant B2B focus or missed DTC opportunity.

Very good perfumes
I have bought 2 different sets of their tester perfumes for my self plus one as a gift. The perfumes really do last for hours, I can put it on at mid-day and still smell it at bedtime. The only problem I have is deciding which one I like best. The delivery is quite fast, and the packaging is nice, with a lovely bow tied on.
Saltworks perfume.
Company sorted out a problem for me promptly and on a Bank Holiday. Can't wait for perfume to arrive-!!!
I love Saltworks perfume
I was given a Saltworks Discovery set as a Christmas gift and what a lovely gift it was. There is such a variety of perfumes and the perfumes linger on my skin for the whole day, unlike some others. So I purchased a large size of my favourite, Tabac Soleil but I could easily have purchased all of them. I had a nice surprise when I opened the package as there was a complimentary purse spray and a sample of a new perfume. Vey happy, thank you Saltworks.
