Segway: The $72M Mobility Gamble
A brand that defined a category but struggles with its own identity crisis
Segway isn't just a brand—it's a cautionary tale of technological overpromise meeting market reality. With $168M in funding and a $72M annual revenue, the company behind the iconic two-wheeled personal transporter has pivoted hard into the crowded electric scooter space. The question isn't whether Segway can build products; it's whether they can escape their own legacy.
"A 1.2-star Trustpilot rating from 801 reviews isn't a customer service problem—it's a fundamental brand trust crisis."
The Traffic Paradox
Segway pulls 1.25M monthly visitors with 53% coming from organic search, yet their global rank (#44,557) suggests they're losing ground to competitors. The data reveals a brand that's still searched for (148K monthly 'segway' searches) but increasingly bypassed for alternatives. Their audience isn't riding the Segway wave—they're searching for the next thing.
The Pivot That Wasn't
Despite Ninebot's acquisition and a $168M war chest, Segway's revenue sits at just $72M—barely covering their 267 employees. The tech stack (jQuery, Bootstrap, PHP) feels dated for a hardware innovator. They're competing in 'electric scooter' (98K monthly searches) but losing to brands that move faster and iterate harder. The brand equity is there; the execution isn't.
The traffic distribution tells the real story: 34.3% from undefined sources suggests tracking gaps, while direct traffic at 37% shows strong brand recognition. But recognition doesn't equal conversion. When your top keyword is simply your brand name, you're not capturing market—you're defending territory.
- Legacy brand weight vs. modern execution gap
- Strong search volume but poor conversion metrics
- Aged tech stack for a 'innovative mobility' company
- Trust crisis with 801 negative reviews
- Revenue barely covers operational costs
The Verdict: A Brand in Limbo
Segway has the hardware and the name recognition, but lacks the digital-first mindset to compete in the modern micromobility era. They're not building the future—they're trying to monetize their past.

F3 Pro - Perfect
Satisfied with F3 Pro very much. It's been 4 months. Let's see how it goes in the future.
Defective Demo Bike Sold as New – Refund Deducted Despite Issue
I purchased a Segway Xafari e-bike through their website with in-store pickup at Cahaba Cycles in Homewood, AL. What I didn’t know at the time was that instead of receiving a brand-new bike, I was handed a demo unit that had already been assembled, ridden (it had miles on it), and had a serious oil leak near the rear suspension coil. When I reported the issue, it took several days and multiple attempts to even get a response from Segway support. Eventually, they agreed to let me return the bike — but only after charging a $200 base fee PLUS 25% of the purchase price, treating it as a "change of mind" even though the bike was defective and not the item I actually ordered. I paid $1,871.99. My refund? $1,170.00. Segway acknowledged the leak and confirmed the bike wasn’t in new condition, but still held me to their full "restocking fee" as a penalty. That's not just disappointing, it's deeply unfair. I don’t normally leave reviews, but this experience was frustrating and felt like I was navigating bureaucracy instead of customer support. If you're spending nearly $2,000 on an e-bike, I highly suggest buying from a company with a clearer return process, better quality control, and a support team that values the customer experience. Update – 2025.12.05: After the original refund was processed, I had accepted that I’d be taking a $701 loss. I didn’t follow up again, assuming the matter was closed. Surprisingly, a Segway supervisor reached out proactively, acknowledged that the unit was defective, and informed me that they would issue a full refund — without any further prompting from my side. I did ultimately receive the remaining $701.99, bringing the total refund to $1,871.99. I’m glad they chose to do the right thing in the end, but I’m leaving my original review as-is because it still reflects the exhausting and flawed return experience that led up to this point. Credit where it’s due, though — they corrected it.
I bought a Segway F3 PRO E about 4 days…
I bought a Segway F3 PRO E about 4 days ago, hoping for very good quality and better range. You get around 50 km of range on a good day in Eco mode, but the problem is that it just feels like you’re slowing down traffic and riding something made for kids. If you need to go fast, you’ll maybe get 20–25 km in Sport mode, if you’re lucky. The front fork has an unusual amount of play, with clicking/tapping noises, and it feels quite wobbly both side to side and up and down. If the wobble and play were less extreme, it wouldn’t be as concerning, but the front fork moves a few millimeters less than the handlebars when turning. Yes, I’ve tried tightening the screws, but it didn’t help. Other than that, the scooter is quite quick and strong, with very good brakes and nice features. If you (Segway) have a suggestion or solution to make these problems less extreme, I would appreciate a response.
No Spare Parts in Türkiye
I am from Türkiye. I love Segway ninebot scooters but I am really having trouble finding spare parts. Segway does not sell parts in Türkiye and I can not find anything anywhere. I dont want to buy from China cause they dont guarantee anything. I hope Segway opens up shop in Türkiye very soon and ends this spare parts crisis.
