SkyFi: The Amazon of Satellite Imagery
How a 44-person startup is democratizing Earth observation data for the enterprise market.
While giants like SpaceX and Planet dominate the headlines, SkyFi is quietly building the critical infrastructure layer: a unified marketplace where anyone can task satellites, search archives, and download geospatial data. They aren't selling rockets; they're selling the intelligence those rockets enable.
"SkyFi isn't just aggregating data; they are abstracting the complexity of orbital mechanics into a simple API call."
The Demand for 'Live' Earth
The search data tells the story of a market hungry for visual truth. SkyFi ranks for high-volume terms like 'live satellite view' (12k searches) and 'NASA Worldview' (20k searches). This isn't just curiosity; it's a signal that users are actively seeking alternatives to clunky government interfaces. SkyFi captures this intent by offering a consumer-grade UX for enterprise-grade data.
The 'Finance' Paradox
Despite offering high-tech satellite imagery, the raw data lists SkyFi's industry as 'finance.' This is strategic. Financial institutions are the earliest adopters of alternative data—using satellite images of parking lots to predict retail earnings or tracking oil tankers for supply chain insights. SkyFi likely monetizes this vertical heavily, using finance as the wedge to fund R&D for broader applications.
With a lean team of 44 generating $12.1M in revenue, SkyFi boasts a revenue-per-employee ratio of ~$275k. This efficiency suggests a high-margin SaaS model wrapped around data procurement. They aren't drowning in overhead; they are scaling a platform. The 2.8/5 Trustpilot rating (albeit based on only 3 reviews) hints at the friction inherent in the satellite data industry—pricing complexity and delivery times remain challenges they must solve.
- API-First Architecture: They abstract away the complexity of dealing with multiple satellite operators (Planet, Maxar, etc.).
- SAR Capabilities: Beyond standard optical imagery, they offer Synthetic Aperture Radar, crucial for seeing through clouds and at night.
- Tasking vs. Archive: They bridge the gap between historical data mining and requesting new captures for specific events.
The Verdict: A Platform Play in a Hardware World
SkyFi is betting that the value isn't in owning the hardware, but in owning the workflow. For investors and founders, this is a classic platform play: aggregating fragmented supply to meet latent demand.

Do a screenshot of Google Maps or Bing…
Do a screenshot of Google Maps or Bing Maps - whatever you choose will be a better quality than the "Super High" images of SkyFi. You can see literally nothing, their satellite must be a Potato as far as I can tell from the horrible image quality. Waste of money.
Like Google Earth zoomed out 10 clicks
The image was supposed to be more recent than Google Earth and perhaps it was. There would be no way to prove it, however, as it was so zoomed out. This image could have been of most any rural hilly location. I have no idea how this is better than Google Earth that allows you to identify buildings and landmarks. I would be surprised if anyone could find these images useful.
Cool idea but awful implementation
Pretty good idea but the implementation is awful. I ordered a high res image for 28$ but got a totally worthless image with bad quality. It can't compare to the "demo" images on their website. I don't see why people would use this service when Google Maps Satellite images are WAY better. I'am very disappointed.
