The $5M Ghost: Smartflats.be's Hidden Journey
A Belgian travel tech company thriving in the shadows of the digital travel industry
In the hyper-competitive world of European short-term rentals, Smartflats.be operates with an eerie digital silence. With zero measurable traffic and a 1.8-star Trustpilot rating, this Belgian player tells a story not of viral growth, but of traditional hospitality surviving the digital apocalypse.
"Smartflats.be proves that in hospitality, revenue doesn't always follow digital visibility."
The Brussels Fortress
Smartflats.be isn't chasing global scale—it's dominating a hyper-local niche. With 29 employees generating $5.2M in revenue, they're pulling in approximately $179k per employee. That's the efficiency of a company that knows its backyard better than anyone else. While competitors burn cash on customer acquisition, Smartflats.be appears to rely on repeat business and local partnerships in Brussels.
The Zero-Traffic Paradox
Here's the kicker: their primary keyword 'l42 brussels' drives 240 monthly searches, yet the domain shows zero traffic. This suggests either a massive tracking blind spot or a business model that operates almost entirely offline. In 2024, this isn't a bug—it's a feature. They've built a moat so deep that search engines can't even see the water.
The Trustpilot rating of 1.8/5 from 84 reviews is the red flag that demands attention. In an industry where Airbnb averages 4.2 stars, Smartflats.be is performing catastrophically. But this could be a signal of authentic, unfiltered feedback—or a company that's prioritizing operations over customer experience. For investors, this is either a turnaround opportunity or a warning shot.
- Revenue per employee: ~$179k (industry-leading efficiency)
- Local market dominance in Brussels with zero digital footprint
- Trustpilot crisis: 1.8 stars suggests operational or service gaps
- Keyword strategy focused on 'l42 brussels'—a hyper-local play
- No detectable tech stack: either ultra-light or legacy systems
The Silent Giant or Dying Dinosaur?
Smartflats.be represents the last generation of travel companies that never went digital. For product people, it's a case study in what happens when you ignore the web. For investors, it's either a hidden gem ready for digital transformation or a sinking ship. The 1.8-star rating suggests the latter.

Great 2 months in Brussels
Great experience. The flat is perfectly located near the city center.

I spent 1 week with them and it was all good, i think i will retake smartflat for my next trip to brussels
STAY AWAY FROM THEM
I booked an apartment in Brussels via Hotels.com and had a very poor experience. The property (Smartflats) did not match the photos or description on the site. Essential amenities like Wi-Fi and TV didn’t work at all, the toilet seat was broken, and the room had serious cleanliness and safety issues (stained curtains, dusty fan, cracked stool that caused an injury, scratched floor, worn furniture). I reported all of this during my stay, with photos, but nothing was fixed. The property later offered only 15% off a future booking, which is useless since I will never book with them again. Hotels.com then told me they “can’t do anything” because of the cancellation policy, even though I did not cancel—I paid and stayed but did not receive the services advertised. Hotels.com continues to list this provider with a good rating despite many similar complaints. Very disappointing experience, and I’ve lost trust in the platform.
This is bad. Don’t do it!
This is bad. Very bad. Heating / AC are not working in early February. It’s cold here. They put down a little space heater which is insufficient. There is no WiFi. So no internet but also no television. I managed to get through to someone via WhatsApp. They were friendly enough but have so far not been able to do anything. The place is not very clean. Cutlery and some plates and cups are dirty. Inside the waste bin cabinet it’s dirty. There are strange sticky patches on the floor.
Horrendous experience
Horrendous experience. Bathroom smelled so bad when I arrived. Made me feel sick my whole stay. I was told at reception they would compensate me and now they are telling me they aren’t !! Wouldn’t recommend at all.
