Thrifty.com: The $25M Rental Giant with a 2-Star Problem
A deep dive into the paradox of high traffic and low trust in the budget car rental space.
In a world dominated by Expedia and Enterprise, Thrifty Car Rental operates as a resilient, budget-focused legacy brand with 759K monthly visitors. But beneath the surface of that traffic lies a stark warning: a 2/5 star rating on Trustpilot across 3,500+ reviews.
"Thrifty is a volume machine trapped in a low-margin, high-complaint industry."
The Trust Paradox
Despite a massive keyword moat—ranking #1 for 'thrifty' (80K monthly searches)—the brand suffers from a severe reputation crisis. With a 2/5 star rating on Trustpilot, the data suggests a disconnect between the promise of 'the absolute best car for your money' and the actual customer experience. For a company of this scale, a 2-star rating isn't just a bad review; it's a systemic operational risk.
Traffic & Acquisition
Thrifty's traffic profile is surprisingly healthy for a legacy brand: 49% organic and 41% direct. This indicates strong brand recall and SEO dominance for its name. However, the lack of data on non-branded keywords (like 'cheap car rental') suggests they are losing the broader battle to aggregators. Their strategy relies heavily on users specifically seeking 'Thrifty,' leaving the vast 'car rental' market (280K monthly searches) largely untapped.
The technology stack is modern but standard—jQuery, Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap—indicating an effort to keep the frontend responsive. However, the reliance on heavy tracking pixels (Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft Ads) and Zendesk for support hints at a marketing-heavy, service-light approach. The 79 employees figure is shockingly low for a $25.9M revenue operation, implying extreme automation or a heavy reliance on franchise models where operational control is diluted.
- Dominant brand equity: 'Thrifty' drives 80K+ monthly searches.
- Traffic quality is high: 41% direct traffic indicates strong loyalty.
- Operational lean: 79 employees for $25.9M revenue suggests high efficiency.
- Reputation risk: 2/5 star rating is a critical vulnerability.
The Verdict: A Sleeping Giant with a Wake-Up Call
Thrifty has the traffic and brand equity to dominate, but operational flaws are eroding trust.

Fantastic Customer Service
I’m really impressed with Thrifty’s customer service. It was my first time renting a vehicle, so I didn't know all the rules. When I was informed that additional insurance had been added to my rental despite knowing my decision to decline it, I reached out to their support team. They responded promptly and refunded the charge without any issues. Mistakes can happen, but the way they handled it was excellent. I’d definitely rent with them again.
Although I didn’t purchase a rental car…
Although I didn’t purchase a rental car JANNET was very helpful and waitied for my return call and even reached out to me when I didn’t return her call with further information for the purchase of the rental car she found me the very best price within the hour for pick up and everything such a sweetie thanks and sorry JANNET my boyfriend found something delivered to the door for extra time to get ready for us sorry next time for sure!
Car I told I'd receive was not the car I got.
I talked to three different Thrifty employees, two before the rental began, about my need for an all wheel drive car. On each occasion I was assured that an all wheel drive car was reserved for me. During the rental, I got into an area where it was apparent that I was not driving an all wheel drive car. I checked the vin number and verified that it was not all wheel drive. I complained to the agent upon return who made a bunch of notes and stated that they'd look into it and get back to me. To date I haven't received a call back.
Let them sign your car return time!
When picking up the car, the agent sneaked in an insurence without asking us. It is our own mistake that we signed the contract without checking. But when the credit card bill arrived, we learned that they charged us an additional day, stating that we returned the car too late. This is not true, and we sent them proof: Debit card bills showing when we fueled up at the gaz station, then (after flight check-in and security) airport shopping and terminal restaurant. According to Thrifty, we returned the car AFTER eating in the terminal... - funny. Now they write that they need the flight boarding pass, which of course we do not have anymore, two month later! And why should we? Last time, we took a bus to the city for a further stay of 3 days... - nobody is required to provide a boarding pass, which doesn't proof anything. They just never commented on the impossibility of the check-out time compared to our shopping and restaurant receipts. Thrifty - never again.
Be very careful with Nifty Thrifty USA
Car was fine, customer service was appalling. We were charged £2,500(!) for a 5 day car hire in the USA. Their staff at Los Angeles put our bank card through four times and they never recognised the deposit we had paid through Expedia travel. The onus was placed upon us to prove it was their fault. This took time, lots of phone calls and the excess payment caused lots of distress. They did provide the accidental overpayments back but never recognised the additional costs we had incurred to correct their errors or our deposit. Be very careful with this company. They may be cheap but their customer service is terrible. We will never use them again.
