TruGreen: The 403 Forbidden Giant
A $2.6B lawn care empire with a broken front door and a 1.4-star reputation
The world's largest lawn care company is literally inaccessible online—a 403 Forbidden error greets visitors at their own domain. Yet behind this digital wall, a $2.6 billion revenue machine processes 294,000 monthly visits and manages 7,627 employees. This is the paradox of TruGreen: a legacy giant operating in the digital dark ages.
"When your own website returns a 403 error, you've either built an impenetrable fortress or you've completely abandoned digital infrastructure. TruGreen chose the latter."
The Traffic Paradox
Despite their broken front door, TruGreen commands 294,329 monthly visits with 57% direct traffic—a testament to brand recognition built over decades of physical service. The fact that 16,370 people search for 'trugreen' monthly while the site is technically unreachable reveals a captive B2B audience locked into contracts, desperately seeking login portals and bill pay options. Their organic search traffic sits at only 28%, suggesting they've completely abandoned SEO and inbound growth strategies.
The Trust Deficit
5,658 Trustpilot reviews averaging 1.4 stars paint a brutal picture. This isn't just a bad rating—it's a reputation crisis. Customers are actively searching for 'trugreen login' (5,080 monthly) and 'trugreen bill pay' (1,350 monthly) because they can't access services they're already paying for. The interim CHRO Larry Costello and VP of Customer Care Kate Oliver are managing a retention nightmare where the product is lawn care but the real business is customer service triage.
TruGreen's tech stack is invisible—zero detected technologies suggests either enterprise-grade stealth or catastrophic underinvestment. Their organic keywords are dominated by branded searches for login and payment portals, not discovery terms like 'lawn care near me' or 'fertilization service.' This is a company that acquired customers through direct sales and field operations, then left them stranded in a digital wasteland.
- 57% direct traffic proves brand strength but also customer lock-in
- 16,370 monthly 'trugreen' searches from users who can't access their accounts
- 77,399 backlinks suggest past SEO efforts now pointing to dead pages
- Top keywords reveal a support crisis, not a growth opportunity
The Legacy Trap
TruGreen proves that operational scale without digital transformation creates a vulnerability that modern D2C startups are poised to exploit. Their moat is drying up.

WATCH for delays in services - they purposefully rescheduled until they were out of the contract and could bill me a huge amount!
TruGreen billed me for services outside the 1 year contract. The reason they gave for not performing the services during the contract period was the weather. Performing the services after the contract ended created over $300 in charges. I was informed there would be charges, I thought they were simply rescheduling to do the promised lawn care. There was absolutely no way to get beyond customer service to reach any intelligent life. They said it was in the small print that once the contract ends, it doesn't matter if Trugreen fulfilled the 7 visits during the year or not. Absolutely would NOT recommend. Plus the lawn looked no better and crab grass seems to have spread even further. HORRIBLE company.

TruGreen USED TO BE an excellent lawn…
TruGreen USED TO BE an excellent lawn service company with well trained and well equipped staff. Unfortunately, they have become a high pressure sales organization that provides a poor quality lawn service with the empty promise of a free retreatment if your not satisfied.

I contracted TrueGreen in good faith
I contracted TrueGreen in good faith, based on assurances for a better lawn. I noticed zero improvement as well as the expansion of weeds and invasive grasses after two months. My "technician" advised me that TrueGreen had no treatment for the invasive grass. He advised me to "use Roundup and then place sod". Next month, I called and asked for a service manager to take a look. I was scolded by the CSR and told I needed to follow "protocol". I asked what that was and he said..."A tech needs to evaluate if there is a problem and if so, will contact a supervisor". Next "technician" told me that the lawn was over-watered (Sprinklers ran twice a week). I showed him the weeds...he hand-sprayed those. Two months later, lawn looks even worse. Invasive grass now covering 40% and weeds still coming up around walkways. The only new grass was now turning brown and dying. Completely different "technician" advised...."That's brown root rot" WTF?? I asked him if he could treat it. He shook his head and said "Too much water". These folks have no idea what they are talking about. They are SO overwhelmed by complaints that they develop policy to ignore and hope the client doesn't cancel. I just did. It took about 20 minutes of begging to finally get them to cancel. Same old promises of attention. Nope.

If you’re thinking about using TruGreen…
If you’re thinking about using TruGreen for lawn service think again. Had a sales guy come and check the lawn he gave me a prepaid price that we agreed on, a few days later I check my statement and he went back into the system and charged me more. I called to cancel the service they offered me an even lower price than I was first quoted at so I agreed. Months go by I don’t see any improvement I called and told them what kind of grass I have they said they been using fertilizer for a different type of grass. I finally canceled with two months left on prepaid service was told I would get the remaining balance it took over a month the receive the refund and it was less than what they told me I was getting back. To make a long story short you’re lawn will look better if you take care of it yourself with less headaches

Trugreen doesn’t follow contract
I prepaid for a yearly TruGreen plan with specific services and a clear schedule. Despite that, TruGreen scheduled and completed treatments outside the agreed-upon terms—without my authorization and without notice. These off-schedule visits were then counted against my prepaid plan. On top of the scheduling problems, the results were poor. I was very disappointed in the control of dollar weed; it persisted throughout the season despite their “control” treatments.
