Vetsource: The $182M Pet Pharmacy Bet
A $60M funded startup betting everything on vet-prescribed home delivery
In a market saturated with direct-to-consumer pet brands, Vetsource quietly built a $182M business by locking out consumers and owning the veterinarian's prescription pad. This isn't a pet store; it's a prescription fulfillment engine that turns vet clinics into distribution hubs.
"Vetsource isn't fighting for the pet owner's attention—they're buying the vet's trust."
The Silent Traffic Moat
While most pet startups burn cash on Facebook ads for organic search traffic, Vetsource dominates a different metric: direct intent. With 64% of traffic coming directly to vetsource.com (vs. only 30% organic), they've successfully embedded themselves into clinic workflows. The top keyword isn't 'buy dog food'—it's 'vetsource login.' This is infrastructure, not retail.
The B2B2C Trojan Horse
Vetsource operates on a counter-intuitive model: they don't sell to pet owners, they sell to vets who sell to pet owners. By integrating with veterinary practice management systems, they've created a closed loop where the prescriber controls the distribution channel. This explains the high direct traffic—clinic staff are logging in daily to manage prescriptions, not browse for deals.
The company's $60M funding history reveals a strategy focused on operational depth rather than viral growth. With 649 employees generating $182.6M in revenue, that's roughly $281K revenue per employee—a healthy ratio for a logistics-heavy business. But the 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating tells a different story: when you own the prescription, you own the complaints.
- Infrastructure over Instagram: Built a prescription fulfillment network that vets depend on daily
- The login wall moat: 64% direct traffic proves they've become a utility, not a retailer
- B2B2C lock-in: By owning the vet relationship, they eliminate consumer price shopping
The Unsexy Billion-Dollar Play
Vetsource proves that in pet care, the most valuable customer isn't the pet owner—it's the vet clinic that holds the prescription pad.

Don't use Vetsource
Don't use Vetsource! My second order never shipped--I called and cancelled--then a few days later, I get one shipment---then a few days after that I get a box with a bag of dog kibble THAT HAD BEEN SLIT OPEN and then squeezed shut!! Then I go on the website and there doesn't seem to be any way to go to "your account" to see if they are going to autoship future orders, which I understand has been a problem for others. You can't "delete" your account. It's ridiculous. I switched to Amazon and it's so much better.
No heartguard...no replies
I ordered two boxes of Heartguard from Vetsource three months ago. I received nothing. Then two months ago I emailed about my order and they asked me for time to investigate the problem. I still haven't received my heartguard and will be contacting PayPal for a refund. BE CAREFUL WITH THESE PEOPLE.
Auto ship Bull ship!
I received an order from vet source, they say it's on auto ship from a vet that has been out of my area for over a year, and was placed thru a store that doesn't have a vet clinic in it. I was never notified it was being shipped like every other reputable auto ship does so you have a chance to cancel or delay. There is no way on their website to manage your account, so I have to take their word that they cancelled it. However they refuse to let me return it, I never opened the package, and will not issue a refund. Guess I will have to try to see if my bank will somehow cancel the $350 payment. Not too happy right now!
Shipping meds without an order or customer approval
One month’s worth of a medication was ordered by my vet and Rx sent to VetSource. They set it up for a monthly delivery without an order. They billed me $70 the following month. I immediately called to notify them that this was not and ongoing medication and there was no order to renew it. They told me there were no refunds. I refused the delivery and it was returned. They never refunded the $70. What they did is illegal. Medications can’t be renewed without an DVM order. I will never do business with this unethical illegal business again and I recommend no one else does either.
I would avoid this service at all costs
I would avoid this service at all costs. Shipping and customer service are terrible. When you order prescription dog food - extremely expensive dog food mind you - it is because your pet has a medical issue. One week later and my order still says " in fulfillment ". I chatted with a customer service agent today and the tone was kind of it is what it is.
