Woot.com: Amazon's Secret Deal Engine
How a quirky daily deal site became a $69M revenue machine with 17M monthly visits
In 2004, Woot launched with a single product daily. Today, it processes 17.2 million monthly visits with just 276 employees, proving that controlled chaos can scale into a $69M revenue business. This is the story of how Amazon's hidden gem mastered the art of the daily deal.
"Woot doesn't compete with Amazon's scale—it thrives within it, turning Amazon's infrastructure into a competitive advantage while maintaining its cult-like community."
The Cult of Woot
With 77% direct traffic and brand keywords driving 246,990 monthly searches, Woot has built something most e-commerce sites can't: a community that types 'woot' directly into their browser. The 1.6/5 Trustpilot rating reveals a fascinating paradox—Woot's loyalists love the chaos, while newcomers struggle with the model. This isn't a bug; it's the feature of a cult brand.
The Amazon Acquisition Playbook
Acquired by Amazon in 2010, Woot operates as a semi-autonomous experiment within the e-commerce giant's ecosystem. The tech stack—AWS, CloudFront, and Amazon's logistics—provides enterprise-grade infrastructure while maintaining Woot's quirky identity. With 5.06M backlinks, Woot leverages Amazon's SEO power while keeping its unique voice.
The traffic distribution tells a story of brand dominance: 77% direct traffic means customers aren't discovering Woot through ads or SEO—they're seeking it out. The 10% organic search traffic, while modest, represents high-intent queries. The real story is in the 97.1% US traffic concentration, showing Woot has mastered the American deal-hunting psyche.
- Daily Deal Model: One product per day creates urgency and scarcity
- Community-Driven: 5M+ backlinks from fans and affiliate sites
- Amazon Infrastructure: Enterprise tech stack with startup agility
- Niche Expansion: From tech to shirts to home goods (shirt.woot gets 8,660 searches)
- Revenue Efficiency: $69M revenue with 276 employees = $250K revenue per employee
The Woot Paradox
Built by Amazon, but not Amazon. A $69M reminder that controlled scarcity beats endless selection when you're selling to a community, not just customers.

I've made 72 orders with them since…
I've made 72 orders with them since 2009 and never had a problem. I know that bad things can happen with any vendor, but look at them as well-run as anything out there.
Purchased a sound bar from them
Purchased a sound bar from them. Great packaging and quality at 75% OFF. No issues with transaction or packing. 4 stars instead of 5 as their parent company (amazon) has much better contact options.
Extremely disappointed in Woot
Extremely disappointed in Woot. I have used them for years, and in the past have had no issues returning damaged goods. I purchased a device with a long warranty. It broke, and I contacted the manufacturer. They said (and I quote), "Woot is not authorized to sell New Devices". Contacted woot as their product page explicitly calls out this LONG warranty, and they are saying it's a manufacturer problem. What the heck is going on with woot customer service? It's abysmal now - at least in this case.
Very disappointed!
Very disappointed! I ordered black shoes, got beige. Still haven't gotten it resolved and I have sent 4 emails. I did get a response with them asking for my order number despite using the "help" on the order itself.
I will not purchase from Woot ever…
will not be purchasing from Woot again. I placed an order for a monitor on November 25. After weeks without any shipping update, I contacted customer service to ask how much longer it would take. The item was finally shipped on December 16. However, for no clear or valid reason, my order was canceled on December 18—the day before the monitor was scheduled to be delivered. This experience has been extremely disappointing. The delay, lack of communication, and last-minute cancellation demonstrate very poor customer service. Despite Woot operating under the Amazon brand, there appears to be no effective way to escalate or file a meaningful complaint through Amazon directly, other than contacting Amazon Pay. Using Amazon’s name gives the impression of reliability and accountability, yet this experience reflects poorly on that brand. Canceling an order after it has already shipped is unacceptable, and the overall handling of this purchase has made me lose confidence in Woot as a company.
