Belgium's Classified Giant: 2dehands.be
The 9.6M monthly visit powerhouse that outmaneuvered Craigslist in Belgium
While the world chases AI unicorns, Belgium's most dominant e-commerce platform remains a humble classifieds site. 2dehands.be isn't just surviving—it's thriving with 9.6M monthly visits, proving that old-school marketplace dynamics still reign supreme in Europe's fragmented digital landscape.
"With 88% of traffic from Belgium alone, 2dehands.be achieved what most platforms dream of: near-total market saturation."
The Trust Paradox
Here's the brutal irony: 2dehands.be commands 9.6M monthly visits with a 1.3/5 Trustpilot rating from 587 reviews. This isn't a bug—it's a feature of the classifieds model. Users don't need to love the platform; they need to transact. The low rating reflects marketplace friction (scams, no-shows) rather than platform failure. In fact, 60% direct traffic proves users have built muscle memory around the domain, bypassing search entirely.
The SEO Moat
2dehands.be dominates by owning generic intent. 'Tweedehands' (Dutch for 'second-hand') generates 119K monthly searches, with '2dehands' at 164K. They've turned a category keyword into a brand. This isn't accidental—it's linguistic capture. When Belgians want second-hand goods, they don't search 'marketplace' or 'classifieds'; they search '2dehands.' That's a moat no algorithm update can touch.
The tech stack reveals a pragmatic approach: Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, and PWA capabilities suggest a team optimizing for speed and mobile-first experiences. With just 16 employees generating $1.4M in revenue, they achieve ~$87K per employee—remarkable efficiency for a platform that handles everything from automotive sales to job listings.
- Traffic concentration risk: 88% from Belgium creates geographic vulnerability
- Direct traffic dominance: 60% direct suggests strong brand recall but limits discovery
- Automotive focus: 'Auto 2dehands' (140 monthly volume) indicates vertical specialization opportunities
The Unsexy Billion-Dollar Lesson
2dehands.be proves that owning a geographic niche with linguistic capture beats chasing global scale. In an era of AI-driven platforms, this Belgian classifieds site remains stubbornly profitable by being the default option for second-hand goods in Belgium.

Great site for second hand stuff in the whole of Belgium
I've been using this site for more than 15 years. As on any platform you have to be careful for scammers. But they're usually quite easy to spot. The site has the option to pay by card to a third party, who then releases the payment to the seller, only when the buyer has received the right item. At only a cost of 5 cents I think. The platform is great, the people you're dealing with, not always. Like in real life. The number of scammers has gone down dramatically lately. Apparently they are being spotted quicker these days.
You can still find some good products
You can still find some good products. I found a phone
Ok but:
Ok but: - a lot of advertising and external website very annoying. - a lot of new one instead of second hand - a lot of fake and spam accounts - a lot of people bidding and not showing up
2dehands.be
2dehands.be, inactive customer service, partially broken service, a lot of thieving users (but also good ones) Let's start with the service: - the site is filled up with items not supposed to be there. Commercials for companies selling products. WHY? It clutters the view of the real "second hand" items. - your items quickly get pushed down to page 5 or lower. It's extremely hard to find your item yourself, let alone let others find it. - But you can push it up by paying. The fee is quite high. But what's worse, your item is not even pushed to the first page, and even so, it quickly falls back lower (due to others paying for their push up, i assume, or due to the commercial items staying up high). - Then you can pay for a permanent spot up. But the tariffs are extreme. Between 10 and 30 euros, depending on the type of object. For one week. Mostly these items go on sale for 100-300 euros. So it's a very hefty "sales percentage". If you can sell it in a week.. 4 weeks to sell it? You lose 40% of your sale.. While you already ask a small percentage of what it costed you.. A decent site I happily would give a sale%. But this is too much. Up next are the users: - You have some great users. Nice people, doing fair bidding. (we all want to get the best price) - Then there are the scammers. The moment you put up your phone number on the site, they contact you via Whatsapp to scam you. I believe they even use bots for that (because it goes thát quick). The site hardly takes action on this. They do now have a payment method enabled, but the phone number is still an option. Why? Is 2dehands.be involved with these scams maybe? Because how can scammers use bots on their site? You might want to have the authorities investigate this "lack of responsability". Third, customer service: - Its hard for customer service to take action on complaints. I sold an item, it was a 310 euro bid from one person for a fridge. I accepted it, but one hour later somebody else upgraded his bid and wanted to bid higher. I'm a nice person to my word, so I kept my promise to the first bidder. Gave the fridge to them. I apologised to the other guy, he was very friendly too. After the bid was done, the site enabled me to rate the other guy, so i did. Gave him a 5 star review and send him a message that i hoped he finds another fridge. Now suddenly, i couldn't rate my buyer anymore, nor could she rate me. What?? Why? Clearly a combination of a bug and a miscoding, as it was not clear to me as a user that I only had one review, and that the system thought by reviewing buyer 2 that i sold the item to him. Why not ASK who was the buyer? The system is not that smart it seems. I contacted support to ask for a rectification. As my buyers were happy, i was happy, we both wanted the 5 star review as it helps buying/selling items on 2dehands.be. They refused, said their system was great, as intended. I clarifief further, that there is only one buyer and the system needs to identify the right one. No, they kept refusing. What about a commercial gesture? No, it was not a mistake by them. Only after a quite harsh final email by me, a small compensation was offered. And a promise they will look into it. Time will tell. Many others write here about similar experiences…
catawiki corruption 88809 sales ads on 2dehands
I tried to contact customer service but a stupid Bot that answers. This site is not a sinking ship anymore its a damn submarine. What annoying me really all the Catawiki advert. make a simple filter so can skip to see all does sales ads. it can be page and pages in a row with just catawiki. As maarktplaats is same owner why not make a possibility to advertise on example 2dehands and it will add if I want also on maarktplaats and harmonies the payment on both platforms. your it development looks to be stuck in 2004 when amd duo core was a thing. Today I search and 2 pages full of catawiki stuff before I see something relevant. Catawiki has today 88809 adverts on 2dehands. its not normal anymore
