Aviasales: The Unsung Giant of Flight Search
How a Russian-born travel meta-search engine quietly generates $62M+ in revenue with 400k+ monthly visitors
While everyone obsesses over Skyscanner and Kayak, Aviasales has built a $62.7M revenue machine by dominating Eastern Europe's flight search market. This isn't just another travel aggregator—it's a regional powerhouse that proves you don't need global scale to build an empire.
"Aviasales proves that in travel tech, regional dominance beats global mediocrity every time."
The Regional Kingmaker
With 412K monthly visits and a 2000+ airline database, Aviasales has captured the Russian-speaking market by storm. Their top keyword 'авиасейлс' (Cyrillic) generates 416K monthly searches alone—more than their English counterpart. This isn't accidental; it's a deliberate strategy to own a market segment most global players ignore or underserve.
The Growth Playbook
The traffic split tells the story: 46% organic and 42% direct. That's a 1:1 ratio that signals strong brand equity and SEO moats. For a travel aggregator, this is gold—most competitors burn cash on paid acquisition. Their tech stack (Ant Design, AWS CloudFront, PWA) suggests they're building for performance at scale while keeping lean engineering overhead.
The Trustpilot score of 3.1/5 from just 3 reviews is a red flag for customer satisfaction, but also reveals their scale: they're likely processing thousands of transactions that never make it to review sites. The real question is whether they're optimizing for volume over experience—a classic trade-off in travel meta-search.
- Strong regional moat in Russian-speaking markets (top keywords are Cyrillic)
- Lean operation: $62.7M revenue / 346 employees = $181K revenue per employee
- Direct traffic at 42% indicates powerful brand recall and repeat usage
- PWA implementation shows mobile-first thinking for emerging markets
The Silent Giant Strategy
Aviasales doesn't need your attention—it needs your transaction. And in travel tech, that's the only metric that matters.

simple and functional
I often use Aviasales when I want to find flight tickets quickly. I like the clean layout and the fact that it shows a lot of budget airlines that don’t always appear on other platforms. Price comparison is easy and fast. Sometimes the cheapest option disappears once I click on it, but that happens pretty much everywhere. It’s one of those tools that just quietly works and saves time. Not perfect, but very practical.
No ticket, no refund, and no response for 10 days. Be careful!
On July 13, I was in Seoul (Korea) and decided to buy a ticket to Da Nang. I’ve been using Aviasales exclusively to buy tickets for many years. I found two tickets at a good price, and on one service the payment didn’t go through, but on the other—Wingie—it was successful. At the bottom, it said “Trusted sellers.” Since Aviasales said so, I assumed there would be no problems. On July 14, I arrived at the airport. At the check-in desk, I was told I wasn’t in the system. I had already downloaded the Wingie app and decided to call them. A robot answered, asked for some of my details, processed the information for 30 seconds, then wished me a nice day and hung up. In the app, I found a chat (I have screenshots but can’t attach them here). Chat 1: They offered to call me back and said they would pass my number to “friends who speak Russian.” They didn’t answer my question about where my ticket was. I want to mention in advance—no one ever called me back, not immediately and not even two weeks later. Chat 2: I started a second chat and immediately asked them not to disconnect. The only responses I received were “please wait,” “don’t go,” and I kept replying that I was still there. After 20 minutes, the chat ended automatically and offered to help with something else. Chat 3: The chat started disconnecting as soon as I asked anything. Then I found a Russian number and called. A man answered and immediately called me by name, which means they already knew what had happened, even though I hadn’t given that number before—I had used a different one in the form. I was told to buy another ticket and that my ticket didn’t exist. “You need to buy a new ticket, okay, goodbye.” At the same time, I was receiving emails with receipts and even invitations to check in for the flight. So the service was acting as if the ticket really had been purchased. I had to buy a new ticket at the airport check-in counter 15 minutes before it closed, at double the original price. My first question is for Aviasales, because this really hurts their reputation—they are the ones choosing such sellers and putting “trusted” next to them. My second question is: how do I get my money back? The same guy from support recognized me immediately the next day when I said I missed my flight. He said they had already sent a request to the airline and transferred the money, and they would pay me when the airline paid them. But I was told that no ticket had been purchased at all, so the money should be returned to me immediately. I asked for an official letter confirming the dates (because I don’t trust verbal promises from such companies), but they refused and told me to just wait. They told me to wait two days. It’s been ten days. What should I do, how can I influence this? How do we make sure companies like this don’t exist—not just on Aviasales, but anywhere? Where can I complain? Where can I post about them? On July 22, 2025, I contacted Aviasales support. They said they would reply within 72 hours. It’s been nine days. Wingie told me the review was in progress—and then silence. Instead of waiting two days for a refund, it’s already been seven. Mentally, I’ve already said goodbye to the money. I just want to help others: always buy tickets only on airline websites, that’s the most reliable option. And Aviasales, with their “trusted” label, won’t help you solve your problem. On July 25, 2025, neither Aviasales nor Wingie has responded to me, so I’m leaving this review here too. I just went on TrustPilot and saw that I’m not the only one—this has happened to many others. I know what to do now—I will request a chargeback from my bank and keep spreading the word.
