awork: The Agency Project Platform
Why 376K monthly users are choosing this German-built alternative to ClickUp & Asana
In a market dominated by giants like ClickUp and Notion, awork is carving a specific niche: the agency project management tool. With 376K monthly visits and a $7.6M revenue run rate, they aren't trying to be everything to everyone—they're building a platform for agencies who need clarity, not just features.
"awork isn't competing on feature count; they're competing on agency-specific workflows."
The Agency-Focused User
The data reveals a telling story: 64% of traffic is direct, indicating high brand recall and loyal users. These aren't accidental visitors; they're agencies returning to a tool that understands their specific pain points—utilization rates, capacity planning, and multi-project visibility. With a 3.6/5 Trustpilot rating from 21 reviews, the tool resonates with a specific segment that finds larger platforms too generic.
The Growth Narrative
awork's organic search strategy is defensive, capitalizing on branded searches ('awork' at 9,930 volume) while users comparison-shop the giants: ClickUp (1.2M volume), Asana (800K), and Notion (5.7M). They are essentially capturing the 'alternatives' market. Their 53 employees generating $7.6M in revenue suggests a high-efficiency model compared to VC-backed competitors burning cash to acquire users.
The leadership team—led by CEO Tobias Hagenau—has built a lean operation. Their tech stack (Vite, Tailwind, jQuery) suggests a pragmatic approach: modern enough for speed, stable enough for reliability. Unlike startups chasing every trend, awork focuses on the core agency workflow: monitoring utilization and planning capacity. This focus is their moat.
- 64% Direct Traffic: High brand loyalty and repeat usage
- Lean Operations: $143K revenue per employee
- Strategic Positioning: Targets agencies specifically, avoiding the 'everything app' trap
- Comparison SEO: Ranks for high-intent keywords like 'Clickup alternative'
The Quiet Giant in Agency Tools
awork proves that in a crowded SaaS market, depth beats breadth. They aren't winning on search volume—they're winning on retention.

Best project management for agencies
Awork is absolutely fantastic in bringing the most important items to the forefront: overall project planing (timeline + capacity), individual work (tasks), and reporting (timings by user + project). We previously used ClickUp - which allows serious customisation, but creates bloat as it tries to cater for every type of user. In ClickUp we had complex workflows that were dropped as they demanded too much attention and were inconsistent between projects and processes. Awork is fantastic for agencies because - it brings the most important information to the forefront - it has a nice user experience that's suitable for employees at all levels - most importantly it moves you and your team forward in your projects. We're really happy we found awork and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

The support is outstanding and always happy to help and the product feels it wants to solve every detail right
Nice interface, poor support
Pros: The interface looks great, and it’s convenient that you can use it as an app on your phone or tablet. Cons: Customer support is a nightmare. It takes more than 48 hours to get a response, which is just unacceptable. And if they promise to call you back? Don’t hold your breath—it took a full week in our case. Also, some features only work with clunky workarounds, which just isn’t worth the time and effort. Not saying this couldn’t be a solid tool, but it’s definitely not for every industry. We can’t recommend it for the printing space—maybe it works better for others. If your business has specific requirements, you’re better off going with a provider that specializes in your field. Also if you cancel your subscription you get an automated email where they offer you another three months of free trial-sorry if you read or at least had a bot categorize the reason for the cancellation it would be clear that a free trial won’t solve the issue and is more of an annoyance than anything else.
Hi Anna, Thank you for your feedback. We regret that you are dissatisfied with our service, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify a few points regarding your concerns: 1️⃣ Support Response Times: We understand the frustration of not receiving timely support. However, we want to clarify that our team has been in direct contact with you on several occasions. After receiving your request to cancel the contract, our Customer Success Manager reached out to you by phone and listened to your concerns. Unfortunately, you did not make use of several available options that would have allowed for an easier resolution, including: 👉 The 30-day money-back guarantee after your purchase, which would have allowed you to cancel the contract within this period. 👉 The opportunity for an extended consultation to address specific workflow challenges, which could have been booked to better align the tool with your needs. 👉 The option to adjust your contract to a shorter term if the 2-year commitment did not meet your needs, as this was available at the time of your purchase. 👉 Since these options were not utilized, we are unable to accommodate the request to terminate the contract. 2️⃣ Callback Promise: We did indeed try to reach out to you by phone, and there was a delay in the follow-up, which was due to a high workload on our side at that time. We sincerely apologize for this delay and are actively working to improve our processes to ensure callbacks and follow-ups are handled more promptly in the future. 3️⃣ Features and Workarounds: We would like to emphasize that awork has delivered all promised features as agreed. During our consultation, we worked together to find solutions for your workflows. You chose a work management tool, and while it may not fully meet all of your specific needs, this is not something that the tool can be held responsible for. We did, however, try to provide suitable workarounds to accommodate your particular situation. 4️⃣ Cancellation and Automated Email: Regarding the cancellation process, it's true that you received an automated email offering an extended trial period. We understand that this may not have been the most helpful for your situation, and we’ll work on improving the communication to make it more relevant for customers in your position. In summary, we understand that the situation hasn’t met your expectations, but we must stand by our previous decision as outlined in our email. We encourage you to continue reaching out if you have specific questions about the tool, and our support and Customer Success teams are available to help with any further inquiries. 🙏
