Byte's Silent Shutdown
A $35M revenue giant stops new customers. What happened to the Aligner challenger?
Byte.com is the ghost of a direct-to-consumer orthodontic empire. Once a fierce competitor to SmileDirectClub, the site now displays a stark message: they are no longer enrolling new customers. This isn't a pivot; it's a controlled demolition of a $35M revenue stream.
"Byte stopped chasing growth to service the legacy. That is a hard pivot for a company with 672 employees."
The Revenue Cliff
With 672 employees and $35M in revenue, Byte was operating at roughly $52k revenue per employee—a thin margin for a hardware-enabled health tech company. The decision to halt new enrollments suggests the unit economics of direct-to-consumer aligners finally cracked under regulatory pressure and rising customer acquisition costs.
The Loyal Patient Base
Despite the shutdown of new sales, traffic remains steady (16k monthly visits). The audience is 62% direct traffic—loyal existing patients logging in to the patient portal. This isn't a brand in decline; it's a service in wind-down mode.
The tech stack reveals a modern foundation—Vite, PWA, and Ant Design—yet the business strategy has reverted to legacy support. It highlights a harsh reality in HealthTech: infrastructure matters less than regulatory runway.
- Acquired by Dentsply Sirona in 2021, signaling a shift from DTC to B2B integration.
- Top keyword is 'byte' (32k volume), but intent is mixed with generic tech terms, diluting brand authority.
- Support emails route to a Zendesk backend, prioritizing retention over acquisition.
The End of the DTC Aligner Era?
Byte's retreat marks the consolidation of orthodontics into traditional dental channels. The wild west of 'teeth in a box' is over.

Excellent customer care, experienced dentist and great product experience
I started using byte around September of last year, and I can say I had an incredible experience using Byte. My alignment journey is over and I’m happy with my smile. I felt confident through the process that wouldnt be shifting my teeth too much, the pre-dental work I had done with my dentist, plus the 3D models as well as the consultation with the byte dentist was infact really helpful in making sure I had no issues throughout the process. I also like that the app was simple to use in reporting progress and when I was done with the first batch of aligners I could order refinement aligners at no cost because I believed I could align my teeth better. This process requires patient discipline and patience. Shipping periods ran up to 4weeks, the start off process was easy, and it helped that I had spent the earlier months in the year making sure I had no cavities, no dental issues that could potentially get worse with the use of aligners. 1 year later I’m done with all 19 upper aligners and 23 lower aligners, ordered my retainer and never been happier to have went this route. Keep in mind my teeth didn’t require a dramatic shift, so byte was perfect for me. Also loved the customer service response throughout and I also received a credit to get a 3D scan done to make sure I got the perfect refinement aligners. Love this service so much.
5/10
Great customer service. Nice people I got this email today, “Thank you for contacting us regarding your request for additional treatment. After a thorough review of your account, we regret to inform you that we are unable to accommodate this request, as you are no longer eligible for further treatment. We understand this may be disappointing and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” To buy the extra plan and then they go back on it is not great business sadly
I am only leaving a review to try to…
I am only leaving a review to try to discourage other people from going through this situation. I did the full round of bite aligners, 14 on my top teeth and 11 on my bottom teeth. Although it did correct my teeth in terms of straightening approximately 90% of the way, the customer service with this company is so disappointing. I have literally requested retainers four times and they have never been sent to me, it is also so frustrating when you lose a retainer or break one because I paid extra for the protection plan and they keep demanding that I send pictures in retainers that I have lost in order to receive new ones. I have submitted a request for new aligners at least three times and never hear anything back. I spent a significant amount of money to go through this and I am still wearing the final aligner. They sent me as my retainer over a year and a half later on the top level and because I lost and broke the bottom one that was my final one to wear I am wearing the one before that. These are not supposed to last this long and there is no reason I should not have retainers, especially since this company promises that you will have years of retainers. I strongly recommend going with another company, because even though my teeth got mostly straight, although those certainly not accurate to what byte promised it would be, the fact that you literally can’t get retainers or a reasonable response from anyone in customer service is beyond frustrating for the amount of money spent. Now I have to start with another company to do final alignment and get access to retainers, which is ridiculous. Although I did appreciate that I was able to do a plan that involve me only wearing the aligners at night, it simply was a bait and switch from what they promised. I spent over $3000 and can’t even get the retainers that were promised to me, I never even got one set of retainers sent to me. So disappointed in this experience.
3-Year “Simple Fix” That Left My Teeth Worse
I began Byte aligner treatment in December 2022 for a very minor issue involving one bottom front tooth, based on their advertising and treatment claims that this would be a simple correction. Instead of improving, my teeth progressively worsened. Over three years, I went through multiple rounds of corrective aligners to fix problems created during treatment. Despite repeatedly raising concerns, I was continually encouraged to keep going rather than being provided a meaningful clinical solution. By the time Byte unexpectedly ended my treatment in December 2025 when I reached out with more concerns, my teeth were more crooked than when I started, and I had developed large gaps between my molars that did not exist prior to treatment. When I requested a refund, I was told my treatment window had expired and that Byte would only provide retainers to “hold my teeth where they are,” advising me to seek corrective care elsewhere at my own expense. I paid a significant amount for a service that did not deliver the promised results and caused additional issues that now require professional correction. I’m sharing this review so others can make an informed decision before starting treatment.
Horrible! Don't waste your money!
Horrible, horrible experience! Seriously, do not use Byte. Maybe spend a little more and go to a real dentist or better company. I have filed a complaint with the BBB as many other customers have. Been in their aligners for 2.5 years and I think my teeth are actually worse! At best, did nothing at all to fix minor crookedness in four teeth despite following instructions properly. Take my advice and don't waste your hard earned money on this place!
