CalAmp: The Silent Telematics Titan
How a 30-year veteran quietly powers the global fleet revolution
While startups chase headlines, CalAmp quietly commands the backbone of industrial telematics. This isn't a flashy SaaS story—it's a hardware-and-software behemoth that's been connecting assets since before the cloud existed, generating $309M in revenue while flying under the radar of most tech investors.
"CalAmp doesn't just track fleets—they've built the connective tissue between the physical and digital worlds for three decades."
The Industrial Internet Pioneer
Founded in 1981, CalAmp predates the commercial internet by a decade. This longevity shows in their DNA: they're not chasing AI hype cycles or pivoting to Web3. Their 1,224 employees focus on a singular mission—unifying telematics data across vehicles, assets, and cargo. The company's 45% direct traffic share reveals a mature, industrial customer base that types 'calamp.com' directly into their browser, not a viral growth engine.
The Hardware-Software Hybrid Advantage
Unlike pure-play SaaS competitors, CalAmp's secret weapon is vertical integration. They don't just sell dashboards—they provide the physical OBD-II devices, CAN bus interfaces (J1939), and cloud infrastructure. This creates a moat: switching costs are astronomical when you've deployed hardware across thousands of vehicles. Their search data confirms this—'cavng-r26-d-v1.0.6.276.tar,gz' and 'obd-ii code explanations' appear in their top keywords, revealing a technically sophisticated user base managing firmware and hardware integrations.
The company's tech stack tells a modernization story. They're running on Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, and Contentful—showing they're actively rebuilding their digital presence. But the elephant in the room? Their organic search traffic is only 43% of total visits. For a company this established, that's low. It suggests they're either heavily reliant on direct enterprise relationships (their strength) or missing significant SEO opportunity (their weakness).
- Hardware-first moat: Physical devices create lock-in that pure SaaS players can't match
- Industrial customer base: 45% direct traffic indicates sticky, enterprise relationships
- Legacy tech debt: Modernizing from 1981-era systems to cloud-native infrastructure
- Search opportunity: Only 43% organic traffic suggests untapped content marketing potential
The Boring Billion-Dollar Bet
CalAmp isn't sexy, but it's essential. In a world of connected everything, the companies that own the physical-digital bridge win. For investors and founders: this is what industrial IoT dominance looks like—quiet, profitable, and deeply embedded in operations that can't afford to fail.

Bus app useless, parents deserve a working app.
Prince William County Virginia uses their app "Here comes the bus", for the past month or more the app is not actively working as it should. There is a miscommunication between the school bus assigned to a specific driver and the app. Apparently, the correct information is being entered into the system and parents like me either get a bus route that has nothing to do with the school bus that my child is on or it plainly states that the bus is not in service where nothing shows on the map or the replacement bus does not show up. Not sure who is at fault here, this app company or the PWC transportation department, needless to say the app is useless or has been useless for a while now. We are not getting any resolution and hoping the app works before the weather conditions get worse. We rely on the app to get us to the bus stop, knowing when it is in route to our stop and avoid standing or waiting longer than we need to there especially in bad weather conditions or if there's delays. As a parent, I am happy that such an app is available to help facilitate and coordinate the morning and afternoon school bus rush, but we sure want it to work as it should. We were advised that when the assigned bus with the original driver runs it, the app functions but when the driver has to switch busses, maybe the assigned bus broke down or needs service, the replacement bus is not syncing with the app and what we all is "The Bus is Not In Service" or if we are lucky we get the bus that is running a different route that has nothing to do with our stop. Please get this app right or provide the necessary help/training needed to whoever is having this issue to operate the app the right way. We don't want the pointing finger at each other game. Thank you
