CompTIA: The Unsexy Giant of IT Certification
How a 279M revenue non-profit dominates the tech talent pipeline
While Silicon Valley chases AI unicorns, a quiet behemoth in Illinois has built a $279M empire certifying the hands-on tech workforce that actually keeps the internet running. CompTIA isn't sexy, but it's essential.
"CompTIA doesn't sell courses—it sells legitimacy in an industry obsessed with credentials."
The Certification Cartel
With 1,377 employees and 3.35M monthly visits, CompTIA has achieved what most SaaS companies dream of: 48% direct traffic. This isn't a marketing funnel—it's a destination. IT professionals don't discover CompTIA; they're mandated to use it by employers. The 'comptia' keyword alone drives 150K monthly searches, creating a moat that Google can't breach.
The SEO Dominance Play
CompTIA's backlink profile (1.03M links) and organic search strategy reveal a masterclass in B2B SEO. They rank for 'comptia security' (72K monthly searches) and 'comptia a' (58K) not through content marketing, but by becoming the de facto standard. When every IT job posting requires CompTIA, their domain authority becomes unassailable.
The 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating is the most revealing data point. With only 68 reviews, it suggests their audience isn't satisfied—they're captive. This isn't a consumer brand; it's a utility. IT professionals don't choose CompTIA because they love it; they choose it because HR departments demand it. The low rating reflects transactional relationships, not brand loyalty.
- Revenue model: Certification exams + training partnerships (not SaaS)
- Traffic moat: 48% direct traffic indicates institutional lock-in
- Market position: The 'Microsoft of IT certifications' without the cloud revenue
- Trust gap: 1.4/5 rating suggests compliance over satisfaction
The Unsexy Infrastructure Play
CompTIA proves that boring B2B certification businesses can outlast hype cycles by becoming the gatekeeper for an entire industry's talent pipeline.

Just taught an A+ class -disappointed
Just taught an A+ class. Core 1 and Core 2 are clearly written by different people or teams. Bit disappointed as its not a cheap course. Core 1 has a logical layout and introduces topics well. The modules on the platform are good and walk learners through each topic. practice exams have links to where to find the info for revision. Labs can be better, the UI is glitchy and not quite user friendly. Core 2 is a much shorter module and should possibly have Mobile devices added to equalise the 2 Cores. It is very repetitive with passwords, group policy and others being mentioned multiple times in different modules. This could be avoided by introducing the topic, covering it and then referring to it in relevant modules. Labs are much more user friendly, but practice exams have no link to find the information in the modules. Very USA centric - HIPAA, OSHA and others are only in USA, yet in content. This should be more generic for global reach There are a few things not covered in platform modules or teaching resources - that are then in exams and practice exams. I would suggest a full review of both teaching materials and the platform modules to ensure it flows better and that all questions in practice exams and actual exams are covered. Remove specific acronyms like HIPAA and OSHA, and discuss the concept.
Very poor experience.
Very poor experience. The training quality and support were extremely low. The promise of helping with job placement is a complete lie — there was no real job support at all. I would not recommend this company.
Payed content unavailable
I bought the Network+ course but now access to testout.com has been unavailable for three days straight. No answer to support requests either. I can only warn people to AVOID CompTIAs own courses if they can not guarantee availability when you want to do your learning ... they probably need to ask somebody who has IT skill ;)

Refused to Make Exception Due to Technical Issues on Their Side
My CompTIA account had technical issues due to their SSO migration effort. I also stopped receiving e-mail messages from them during that time as well. By the time I regained access to my account, my cert had expired by a few days. I worked with them to provide all of the details about how I was unable to renew my cert in time due to their issues, but they were less than helpful and only offered a discount voucher to retake the exam from scratch rather than allowing me to do CE. I had kept my Sec+ valid for over 10 years until this happened... I'm not surprised by their low ratings on this site considering they scam their "candidates" in order to make more money selling exam vouchers.
