Cubbit: The Antidote to Cloud Lock-In
How a 64-person Italian startup is building sovereign, geo-resilient storage for the post-cloud era
Cloud storage was supposed to liberate us, but it mostly just traded physical servers for vendor lock-in and unpredictable bills. Cubbit isn't just another S3 clone; it's a fundamental rethinking of data sovereignty, embedding geo-resilience directly into the architecture rather than bolting it on as a costly afterthought.
"They're not selling storage; they're selling sovereignty. The data lives where you choose, not where AWS decides."
The Developer-First Approach
Cubbit's 21K monthly visitors show a niche but engaged audience. With 44% coming from organic search and 43% direct traffic, they're building a brand that developers actively seek out. The search volume for 'cubbit cloud' (120 monthly) and 'planetek and cubbit' (180 monthly) suggests they're winning specific enterprise partnerships while maintaining developer mindshare. Their GitHub presence and S3 compatibility signal they're playing the long game—building tools developers actually want to use, not just what procurement departments mandate.
The Sovereignty Play
While hyperscalers offer 'regions,' Cubbit offers true multi-region embedding by design. This isn't just about GDPR compliance—it's about architectural resilience. Their 80% cost savings claim against AWS/Azure isn't just marketing fluff; it's a structural advantage of their distributed model. The 'undefined' traffic countries (47.5%, 11.6%, 11.2%) suggest they're either masking geographic data or have a truly global footprint without concentration. For European companies facing increasing data localization laws, Cubbit isn't just cheaper—it's legally safer.
The leadership team tells a story of deliberate scaling. With Alessandro Cillario and Marco Moschettini at the helm as co-founders, they've built a 64-person company generating $8.4M in revenue—a lean operation that prioritizes product over marketing. The absence of a public funding round suggests they're either bootstrapped or have strategic investors who value sustainability over blitzscaling. This reflects in their product: a mature, S3-compatible system that doesn't chase every feature but nails the ones that matter for sovereign storage.
- S3 compatibility ensures immediate developer adoption without code rewrites
- Embedded multi-region architecture provides geo-resilience without complex configuration
- 80% cost savings versus hyperscalers creates a compelling ROI for data-intensive workloads
- Full data control eliminates vendor lock-in and supports regulatory compliance
Cubbit represents the anti-hyperscaler thesis
For founders and product leaders tired of cloud tax and data hostage situations, this Italian startup offers a pragmatic alternative: enterprise-grade storage without the enterprise-grade lock-in. The question isn't whether they can compete with AWS on features—it's whether the market is ready to prioritize sovereignty over convenience.

Cubitt to B2B improvement
Cubbit's technology enables companies to offer S3 solutions, changing the paradigm and approach. It ensures that SMBs can have dedicated S3 space while maintaining data sovereignty. DS3Cloud provides IT integrators (like ours) the ability to enhance their B2B offerings while ensuring resilience and significantly reducing costs for their customers. Scalability, resilience, and security without compromise or hidden costs. Managing and offering solutions for customers with different needs, such as backup, disaster recovery, data lake & AI, and archiving, from a single, simple dashboard is a significant advantage.
Very efficient S3 compatible storage
Very efficient S3 compatible storage. We use Cubbit DS3 for hundreds of TiBs in dozens of buckets without any hassle. Simple to set up from the console, even if you have to set immutability or access rights. - cloudfabric-

Have had the Cubbit for a few years and strongly recommend for those that want to control their cloud data
Have had the Cubbit for a few years. Was initially a bit of a challenge (which is probably what other were commenting), they have added functionality including app for iPhone and Apps for computers (macOS and Windows). I don't use Android so can't speak to that. Uploading and sharing files is easy and works just like dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive. Only issue is the uploading and downloading function is slow with all the encrypting and block chaining. But they are rolling out a new update that will speed things up dramatically. Leaving the unit plugged into router and on all the time is a non-issue as it doesn't use much energy and there is nothing to do from a user perspective. And if one has to pay for 1 TB of cloud storage, having this "free" simply to buy and contribute the 1 TB (or more) seems like a no brainer. And if you don't want to continue, you can use the device as local 1 TB drive. Overall, I if you don't want the big data companies controlling data on their servers and billing you for recurring subscriptions and yet still want a "cloud storage" function with ability to share and access via multiple platforms, this works well. PS. Customer support is ok - provided 9 to 5 via email from Italy so not a 24/7 service at the moment. Biggest concern is that some Private Equity firm or Tech firm will buy this and then convert it to a subscription service.... Overall - I like this and am happy to support.
