Europcar: The 90-Year-Old Rental Giant Still Playing Catch-Up
A legacy brand fighting to stay relevant in a digital-first rental market
Europcar isn't just renting cars—it's managing a 90-year-old legacy while battling a 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating that screams operational friction. With nearly $3.3B in revenue and 9,324 employees, they're a global force, yet their digital presence tells a story of a legacy brand struggling to modernize.
"Europcar has the scale but lacks the digital soul—proving that legacy infrastructure can be both a moat and a millstone."
The Trust Gap
With 3,700 Trustpilot reviews averaging a dismal 1.4 stars, Europcar faces a crisis of confidence. For a company handling over 1M monthly bookings, this isn't just bad PR—it's a fundamental product problem. The gap between their $3.3B revenue and customer satisfaction suggests a business optimized for volume over experience.
SEO Dominance vs. Brand Dilution
Europcar commands 254K monthly searches for its brand name, but the keyword chaos is telling: 'europecar,' 'eurocar,' 'europ car'—they're fighting for their own brand identity. With 59% organic traffic, they're winning search, but the misspellings reveal a brand that's become generic, not iconic.
The tech stack reads like a patchwork quilt of modern tools—Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, Ant Design, PWA—yet the user experience feels disconnected. They're using Google Tag Manager, Clarity, and Dynatrace to track every click, but can't seem to fix the fundamental friction points that drive customers to competitors. The 59% organic traffic is impressive until you realize it's likely driven by price-sensitive travelers who churn after one bad experience.
- Global scale with 9,324 employees but fragmented digital experience
- Strong SEO moat (254K brand searches) diluted by brand confusion
- Modern tech stack (PWA, Tailwind) failing to translate to customer satisfaction
- Revenue powerhouse ($3.3B) trapped in legacy operational models

Calling customer service
The rental company isn’t the worse but trying to speak to customer service is a nightmare. You either get passed around, they don’t answer your question or the way they will transfer you and the call just cuts off.
Deceived into unwanted excess insurance.
The car was fine, pick up and return were simple. A very friendly man at the desk. BUT he deceived me into paying for excess insurance. I have my own excess insurance, I told him I didn't want his, but on the form he had ticked the box and I didn't notice. 3 weeks later the charge, £123 for 3 days, appeared on my credit card bill. Don't trust them!
Europcar doesn't pay back.
Europcar doesn't pay back. They incorrectly charged me and said they would credit my account. I had to let it take 3-15 business days. It has now been a whole month. Today they answered that due to errors in their system, they need to do a bank transfer. Every damn response from them takes 3-7 days. Please, DON'T EVER use this company for car rental.
Europcar is a disgrace.
Europcar is a disgrace. I picked up the car in Munich and returned it in Basel. Two different countries. A border crossing is obvious. Twelve months later, they claimed I owe a border-crossing fee because I supposedly did not inform them. That defies basic logic and geography. When I complained, there was no discussion. Just a repeated demand for payment. This is either sheer incompetence or deliberate indifference. Either way, I am done with Europcar.
Europcar staff lie and deceive to make a quick buck.
Hired a vehicle and made the booking in Australia and paid for in full. The special vehicle was a Mercedes Benz CLA. The add had no mention of a similar vehicle, hence why I booked and paid for it one month before going to the UK. When I receive the receipt for the booking it then mentions "or similar vehicle". This in itself was disappointing. Then went to collect the vehicle at Gatwick airport at 10.45pm in the evening. I had elderly parents in tow and it was -1 degrees outside, plus having travelled on the plane and was extremely tired. I know they are deceptive from previous rentals but was distracted. When I arrived at the desk the customer rental assistant told me it was "my lucky day". My response was how so? Your car is not available but we have an upgrade. Well what do you know!! I did mention that I had paid for the vehicle a month ago in full and a change of cars is not what I am looking for. He said this one is better and it won't make any difference. I did ask if it was a bigger engine as I am not wanting extra fuel costs, he told me it was more efficient. I told him I was tired and I just want to get out. He made comment of not booking a prestige car online but choose a "crappy car" (his words) then upgrade at the counter as it is cheaper. He completed the paperwork and asked for my credit card, which is normal, on every occasion I have rented a vehicle they ask for an imprint on the card. He then started charging money to the card and I asked why as it was fully paid for, he told me it was for a holding deposit. He then said just sign here and here and off we went. None of the conversation he had with me was true it was all just a scam. I found this out on returning to Australia and checking my statement. I was charged an extra $450 for the rental. I phoned Europcar and low and behold, nothing they could do I should read documents before I sign. They did not comment at all on the deception and lies told by their counter staff. My advice when you pick up the vehicle that you have booked and they tell you it's not available is start arguing with them and demanding to see the manager. Now they have charged me an extra $284 a month later and I have no idea what this is for. After spending an hour on hold waiting for them to pick up, to be told I have to show proof and then they will investigate and come back to me. So disappointing. Just be cautious I know most of the rental car companies have their scams but this was to a new level.
