Firebase: The Silent Giant of App Dev
Google's $2.8M revenue platform dominates the market with just 28 employees.
Firebase isn't just a backend service; it's the invisible infrastructure powering millions of mobile and web apps. Yet, with a revenue of only $2.8M and a mere 28 employees, it operates more like a lean startup than a Google behemoth.
"Firebase proves that in the age of AI, infrastructure scales faster than headcount."
The Generative AI Pivot
Firebase is aggressively integrating generative AI into its core offering. The H1 tag 'Make your app the best it can be with Firebase and generative AI' signals a shift from pure backend services to AI-assisted development. This move targets the low-code/no-code market, threatening competitors like Supabase and AWS Amplify.
The 'Direct Traffic' Paradox
With 46% of traffic coming directly to firebase.google.com, the brand has achieved near-monopoly mindshare among developers. However, the Trustpilot rating of 2/5 suggests a disconnect between developer love and enterprise satisfaction. The friction point? Complexity and cost scaling.
The traffic data reveals a fragmented global reach, with 'undefined' countries dominating the top 5 list. This usually indicates either a privacy-focused analytics setup or a truly borderless product adoption. Given Google's infrastructure, it's likely the latter—Firebase is the default choice regardless of geography.
- SEO Dominance: Ranks for 'firebase' (1.2M volume) and 'google firebase' (44K volume), capturing organic intent effortlessly.
- Tech Stack: Built on Tailwind CSS and Bootstrap—proving even Google's internal tools prefer utility-first CSS.
- Conversion Friction: The signup flow redirects through Cloud Console, creating a slight drop-off point compared to direct SaaS onboarding.
The Silent Monopoly
Firebase isn't selling a product; it's selling the default infrastructure for the next generation of apps.

Best Platform for Backend!
Best Platform for Backend!
A little harsh review
Now, some might strongly disagree with me on what I am about to say, just keep in mind this is my opinion: First off, firebase is amazing for any new or experienced developer that wants to create a web application but doesn't like back-end or needs a trusted ( more on that later ) hosting for it. The features it offers are 2 types of databases, a storage solution, authentication, ads, analytics and functions. All of them run fine and are just as promised, the problem appears when you start going over the free limit. While not being very expensive, sometimes renting a VPS, setting up Appwrite.io and using that is cheaper, as firebase has Google Cloud prices, which are not the most friendly ones. Now, about privacy: technically, when you store a users data with firebase you don't actually own it ( by my understanding of the service terms ), meaning your users data is not private from third parties, leaving google with all of your data at their disposal. tl;dr : Why 3 stars? Well, I like my users data to be private and be shared only with my and theirs consent. Also, it is a bit pricey compared to the self-hosted alternative. Is it amazing? 100% yes! Would I used it in production? If the data is shared by default, no.
Not easy anymore
It's incredible how complex Firebase has become, because of the link with Google Cloud. Firebase used to be an easy solution, but it's all soo overly complex that I don't trust any of it. Maybe I will suddenly get a large bill because I made a mistake, or the configuration is bad. It's really annoying. The service has gone from an easy to use cloud solution to a complete mess of configuration annoyances, security angst, complex issues. The documentation is overly complex. You loop around in al the options. And everything refers to Google Cloud again. Nothing is easy with Firebase anymore. It has become a little glue on top of GC, nothing more. It's a mess
They have made it super easy to get…
They have made it super easy to get started, in the sense of adding firebase to you project. However, if you want to use it for anything, it gets much more complicated and is full of bugs. I needed to just have basic email authentication, and that is broken by default on all new projects. You can sign up with your email, but you are not allowed to sign in again. It has been like this for 3 months, see firebaseui issue 1040 (unfortunately I'm not allowed to post direct link). Firebase itself might work, but do not rely on Google to maintain FirebaseUI.
