Heroku: The Cloud's Enduring Paradox
From $57M revenue to a 1.3 Trustpilot rating—what's really happening at the developer cloud pioneer?
Heroku defined the modern PaaS era, yet today it sits at a fascinating crossroads: profitable and popular, but facing a user revolt. This is the story of a cloud giant that won the hearts of developers but struggles to keep them.
"Heroku built a billion-dollar developer experience, but the bill for that experience is coming due."
The Loyalist Army
With 59% direct traffic—nearly double the industry average—Heroku's user base is the definition of sticky. Developers aren't finding Heroku; they're seeking it out. That 1.5M monthly visit figure isn't driven by SEO tricks, but by a decade of muscle memory and genuine affection for the platform's simplicity.
The Trust Paradox
Here's the brutal contradiction: Heroku commands massive brand loyalty (139K monthly searches for their name alone) but sits at a 1.3/5 Trustpilot rating. This isn't a product failure—it's a pricing and positioning crisis. Developers love the product; they're just voting with their wallets against its economics.
The data reveals a platform that's become a victim of its own success. Heroku's 34% organic traffic share suggests strong word-of-mouth, while top keywords like 'heroku login' and 'heroku pricing' tell the real story: users are actively trying to access the platform and understand its costs. The 318-person team generating $57.6M represents exceptional productivity, but also suggests a company optimized for efficiency over expansion.
- The 'direct traffic' metric (59%) is extraordinary—users type 'heroku' directly into browsers
- Pricing searches (4.5K monthly) signal conversion friction and user anxiety
- CLI and login searches show a committed technical user base
- The 1.3/5 rating is an outlier that demands investigation
The Developer Experience Dilemma
Heroku proved that DX matters more than infrastructure. Now the market must decide if that value is worth the premium—or if the next generation will build their own version of simplicity.

Expensive but underwhelming in…
Expensive but underwhelming in performance. If you enable it at the end of the month and disable it at the beginning of the next, you’ll be charged twice. It’s a 2 instead of a 1 only because it’s easy to set up
Heroku offers an affordable platform…
Heroku offers an affordable platform with useful features, but we've faced some challenges. Frequent updates, often rolled out without notice, have caused our apps to break, requiring quick fixes on our end. Additionally, we were locked out of our first account and had to create a new one, yet we're still being charged for the inaccessible account. While the pricing is competitive, improved customer service and account management would greatly enhance the user experience.
Refuses to delete my account
Despite three explicit requests, Heroku refuses to delete my free account and personal data. This is not GDPR-compliant. Very disappointing and lacking transparency.

Such a bad handling of subscription
Such a bad handling of subscription. I have to pay, even though I have not used Heroku for about 1 year. I saw a charge on my card and now, when I want to remove the card from my account, they want to charge me another 5$ just to remove my card. Bullshit! And I cannot even delete my account - they are making it hard to leave them. But oh boy will I leave them!!
