Flixster: The Zombie Domain Haunting Fandango
A 400k visit ghost town that reveals the hidden cost of M&A neglect
Flixster.com is a digital ghost ship—redirecting to Fandango while still pulling in 417,000 monthly visitors. This is the story of what happens when acquisition meets abandonment, leaving millions in brand equity to rot.
"Flixster isn't a product anymore—it's a redirect strategy built on 2 million backlinks that Fandango is too afraid to lose."
The Accidental Traffic Magnet
With only 6 employees and $400K revenue, Flixster is running leaner than a startup runway. But here's the paradox: 19,350 people still search for 'flixster' monthly, and another 55,010 misspell it as 'flixter'. That's 74K monthly searches for a brand that technically doesn't exist anymore. The 2.04M backlinks are the real moat—each one a breadcrumb trail leading to a 404 experience.
The Zombie Acquisition Playbook
NBCUniversal acquired Flixster in 2011 for its MovieTickets.com tech, then stripped it for parts. Today, it exists as a landing page with a 1990s-era domain authority. The tech stack (jQuery, Bootstrap, Tailwind) screams 'we stopped caring in 2019'—yet the traffic keeps coming. It's a masterclass in domain decay: keep the URL alive for SEO, but kill everything that made it a product.
The privacy policy links to Versant Media, suggesting the assets were quietly offloaded. Meanwhile, Fandango's brand is the only one that matters—Flixster is just the toll booth they forgot to tear down. The 5 Trustpilot reviews (2.5 stars) are likely ghost complaints about a service that no longer exists, further eroding trust in the parent brand.
- 74K monthly searches for a dead brand name
- 2M+ backlinks pointing to essentially a redirect
- 6-person team managing a $400K revenue asset
- Tech stack frozen in time since 2019
- Privacy policy outsourced to Versant Media
The $400K Zombie Asset
Flixster proves that in M&A, sometimes the smartest move is letting a brand die slowly while its SEO value lives on. It's not a product—it's a redirect with a revenue stream.

Very low quality Digital Movies, on anything larger than an iPad
Most of the free Digital Copies, that come with a Blu Ray move purchase, seem to end up being made available to you through Flixster. Unfortunately, the picture quality offered is very poor, resulting in a terrible viewing experience, if watched on anything larger than an iPad. Although this is probably the fault of the movie studios, rather than Flixster, it does put me off using Flixster to watch any Digital movies.
Definitely not going to recommend this…
Definitely not going to recommend this website because there are other website a like this one with random ads and some are really bad 👎 and just does not work
The only thing you will see is pop ups!
Tried watching an episode of show but constant pop ups prevented viewing. Pop ups every 2 mins that freeze the show and disrupt everything as you have to clear them all and then find the screen which vanishes. Have read stuff online about site being dodgy so this hasn't improved my opinion. I would advise to find another site to watch your fav shows as they just seem to want to push other things!
Seriously terrible picture quality
Seriously terrible picture quality for downloaded films - unwatchably bad. I have digital downloads for all the Harry Potter movies - firstly there is no way to download the 4K versions (despite this being what I purchased), and the HD versions just looks terrible - so many compression artefacts (blocky colours etc) - it's like stepping back 10+ years! It's the last time I purchase digital downloads.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
AVOID AVOID AVOID Stay well clear of flixster, the digital age of movies means nothing to this company, but yet we all know this is the way forward and dvd will soon die a horrible death alongside lazer disc and vhs. I have spent hundreds of £ building my collection, only for Blinkbox and talk talk to give up on it and pass over to rakuten.tv to take over, which aided in the loss of many titles(to be fair to rakuten they have tried to resolve that issue and did so to my satisfaction) But it still left me short of many titles which I will never see again. Which leaves me with flixster which still has many titles which I lost on the transfer and although you are able to watch these titles via your ipad, iphone or similar tablet there is zero support for my laptop, unless I wish to buy a crappy chrome pad, not happening, so my other option would be projection.....but no flixster do not support this either! Having contacted flixster on many occasions I am fobbed off with the whole "Oh we are sorry this isn't available, maybe try our other supported devices" and then provide some crappy link to devices which I have already told them I do not have or something similar and just as skirting of the issue, which clearly shows they don't actually read the email! So my point being is AVOID FLIXSTER LIKE THE PLAGUE IF YOU CAN!!
