Ferry from Barcelona to Genoa

Boarding the ferry from Barcelona was pretty straightforward despite a big queue to register. Once on board the staff were really helpful and a guy carried my bag up the stairs for me. The cabin had clean bedding and was generally fine. The food was ok, not fantastic. After reading some reviews on here I was absolutely dreading it but it was actually perfectly ok. We arrived in Genoa 5 hours early about 7am which wasn’t a great problem except it took quite a while to disembark. Overall - not quite Brittany Ferries standard of food etc but perfectly ok.

My first time on such a major crossing…

My first time on such a major crossing and I only wanted a ferry so that I didn’t have to drive all the way back to England from Sicily. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of luxury. I was put off the idea of a cabin as it mentioned sharing a 4 bunk cabin. So opted for the luxury coachman’s seat. Ok, so boarding was a little haphazard, but I wasn’t expecting it to be anything else. In fact I would have been very surprised at anything else. Once I found my seat, I realised I wasn’t given a choice of “luxury seat” and I found mine was in the middle of a group of 3 seats. Thankfully, sailing by ferry is not like aircraft, and as I went in search of food at midnight I soon got to see the sleeping arrangements of more seasoned passengers, which was quite illuminating. As it was 22hour trip I treated my self to the 100 euro restaurant ticket. Overall, I was impressed with the ship. I made my way up from deck 7 to the cocktail bar. And to my relief it was a totally different world. There was hardly anyone there and a very friendly fellow keeping the bar was the lone server and he made me a hot sandwich, fresh orange juice, and coffee. Very enjoyable. Tasty. Hot. Just what I needed. With coffee on tap (almost) I decided that this was where I was going to spend my night. I chose an armchair and table in front of the cinema screen and drifted off for a pleasant night. I was awake to see the sun rising which was quite special. Walked around the outside of the ship in a brisk enjoyable wind. Then I went back to the cocktail lounge and it was still empty. I tried to ask one of the crew if I could open one of the blinds so that we could get the forward looking view. I may have misunderstood but he gave the impression that he would open it, or he misunderstood. But I stood close by waiting for a while and gave up. So decided to explore the boat a bit more. Returning to the cocktail bar I ordered a cornetto and coffee. Again friendly server asked whether it was tasty. Of course it was and noticing one of the blinds open, and a passenger sat in front of it, in the absence of any instruction not to open them I opened one and sat there in a very quiet bar. I fell asleep in my chair to be woken by the buzz of passengers arriving for breakfast. Around lunch time there. Was one till operator and one may be two servers. It seemed in adequate for the number of passengers and rather joining the queue for a coffee I went to see if I could find somewhere else just for coffee. When I did find somewhere, we were told that bar was closing and not serving till 15:30. Returned to the cocktail bar with my 100euro meal ticket and stood patiently in the very long queue. Eventually, put in my order with the same person who was stringing me along about opening the window blind. I ordered a similar meal as had earlier on which was nice and hot and it was plonked before me unceremoniously uncooked. I tried to get his attention again and he ignored me. So was more vocal. On telling him I would like it hot he told me that it was served cold not hot, because of the mozzarella. Realising he was being obtuse and rude I made it known to him that I wanted it hot. He was very angry, manhandled my food touching it with his hands in the process and threw it in the toasting device. Im not prepared to pay 100euro for a luxury meal ticket to just be expected to accept the fact that the server didn’t want to cook it. So he was rude, he lied, and was unnecessarily aggressive. I asked for his name and he turned his back on me I asked again having to raise my voice in the process and he just ignored me. Why does one person have to spoil the service of what for me was otherwise a very pleasant experience. It had all the good things but when you have someone unhappy in there job he needs to be removed from customer facing work. As I said I enjoyed the trip with all the little quirks but I will not stand for someone who is just a bully.

It is not directly clear that when booking with a dog the pet friendly cabins are not automatically selected

Catalunya staff members

I have just taken a trip from Palma de Mallorca to Barcelona. I found the staff good. EXCEPT, when I reached Barcelona... I am a man of 66 years of age. I was travelling with 2x heavy bags. In Palma 2 crew members help me carry my luggage up the loading ramp. BUT... The off loading staff in Barcelona stood back and watched me struggle down the off ramp with my luggage... making negative comments but not offering to help. NEGATIVE, BAD, DISGUSTING
