Grammarly: The $626M AI Writing Empire
How a simple grammar checker became a global AI powerhouse with 54M monthly visits
Grammarly didn't just fix your typos—it built a $626M empire on the promise of perfect communication. Now, it's racing to become the dominant AI writing assistant while navigating the very existential crisis its own technology created.
"Grammarly's moat isn't grammar—it's the 10.4 million backlinks and 51% direct traffic that make it the default choice for writing assistance."
The AI Pivot That Redefined the Business
Grammarly's most brilliant move wasn't fixing commas—it was recognizing that AI writing assistance would face an existential threat from AI-generated content itself. Their top keywords reveal the strategy: 'AI detector' (8.3M volume), 'AI checker' (4.4M volume), and 'humanize AI' (2M volume). They're not just fighting AI—they're becoming the solution to AI's problems.
Traffic Dominance Through Direct Access
With 51% direct traffic (vs 41% organic), Grammarly has achieved what most SaaS companies dream of: users typing 'grammarly.com' directly into their browser. This isn't just brand loyalty—it's product dependency. When your tool is embedded in workflows across 1,439 employees and 54M monthly visits, you've become infrastructure, not software.
The company's 3.7/5 Trustpilot rating from 10,363 reviews tells a nuanced story. It's not the cult-like following of some developer tools, but it's the steady satisfaction of a tool that simply works. The 48.2% traffic concentration in 'undefined' markets suggests either data limitations or a deliberate focus on English-speaking markets where writing quality carries professional weight.
- AI detection queries now outpace grammar searches 3:1
- 54M monthly visits with 51% direct traffic is product-market fit at scale
- $400M in funding for a tool that charges $12/month/user is capital efficiency
- 10.4M backlinks = the ultimate SEO moat in writing assistance
Grammarly's Real Product Isn't Grammar—It's Trust
In an AI-saturated world, the most valuable writing tool is the one that tells you if your words are human. Grammarly's $626M revenue proves that trust, not just correctness, is the product.

7-day trial - shut up and take my money
I bought the 7-day trial, and now I feel upset, because as it turns out, it is the money worth... Even "shut up and take my money"-level worth.. But somehow stating that 'it is its money worth' is registered as a grammatical error. Grammarly wants to change it to "not worth the money" the whole time....
Refund
Accidentally forgot to cancel my subscribtion after my free trial. Cancelled it on the same day, and contacted their support. They refunded my subscription. Fantastic support, when they didn't have to.
PASSABLE
WELL, GRAMMARLY HAS BEEN GREAT FOR ME, BUT LATELY IT ISN'T SHOWING MY ERRORS COMPLETELY. I DON'T SEE RED WHEN I SHOULD. AS WELL MANY TIMES IT SAYS TEXT NOT AVAILABLE WHEN I TRY TO FIND OUT MY ERRORS.
Excellent analysis tool but not an editor
Excellent analysis tool, but not an editor. I used Grammarly Pro during the trial period and received excellent results for small blocks of data. My use, during the end-of-year holiday season, extended outside the trial period due to the calendar timing. I discovered, however, that its current design does not allow it to edit large amounts of existing text efficiently AFTER extensive composition. It is an outstanding and efficient tool when used "as you compose". When I discussed this issue with Grammarly support, they readily admitted it was currently not the right app for my needs, and I received instant credit on my bank account for the subscription payment. A trustworthy company, indeed.
Great for all types of content checks
I've been using Grammarly for several years now, both for my business (content writing) and communication. The service is easy to use and a much-needed step for making sure your content is error-free and sounds good. I recommended it especially to anyone writing content, be it for their job or for pleasure. The spell checker is the thing I use the most, though I also consider some of the style recommendations. The Plagiarism and AI checkers are also very helpful in my case, as I write articles and can immediately test them. I use the Grammarly Premium service because I need all the extra features, but amateur writers can survive with the basic product, I'm sure. I'm giving it 4/5 because some recommendations don't make sense, and the service doesn't understand slang or specific language. Also, it can sometimes go in a loop of recommending changes to the same thing back and forth. It's overall a good service and something I use daily anyway.
