The Public Transport Backbone of Liverpool
How a government agency built a digital-first travel hub with 266k monthly users
In a world obsessed with disruptive startups, Merseytravel proves that government agencies can build digital experiences that rival any commercial platform. With 266,000 monthly visitors and a tech stack that includes Vite and Tailwind CSS, this isn't your grandfather's transport authority.
"They're not just listing bus times—they're building a unified digital ecosystem for an entire city region."
The Digital-First Commuter
Merseytravel's audience isn't passive. They're searching for '472 Liverpool' (830 monthly searches) and 'journey planner merseytravel' (120 monthly searches). This isn't casual browsing—it's mission-critical information for daily commuters. The 66% organic traffic share reveals that users actively seek them out, bypassing Google's generic results. This is the power of becoming the authoritative source for a specific geography.
The Trust Paradox
Here's the provocative part: despite 218,060 backlinks and 266k monthly visitors, Merseytravel holds a 2.1/5 Trustpilot rating from just 28 reviews. This reveals the brutal reality of public-facing digital services—scale doesn't guarantee satisfaction. The low review volume relative to traffic suggests either a disengaged user base or a service that's functional but not delightful. For investors, this is a goldmine: a captive audience ready for better UX.
The tech stack tells its own story. Using Vite and Tailwind CSS, they've embraced modern frontend development. The PWA (Progressive Web App) implementation is particularly telling—this is an agency that understands mobile-first, offline-first experiences for commuters who might lose signal on trains. They're not waiting for perfect conditions; they're building for the messy reality of public transport.
- Domain authority is high (218k backlinks) but monetization is indirect—this is a public service, not a commercial platform
- Traffic concentration is extreme: 89% from 'undefined' countries (likely UK, but data opacity is concerning)
- Social presence is strong across 5 platforms, but engagement metrics are hidden
- The 'WeatherWise' headline suggests they're expanding beyond transport into broader city-region services
The Unsexy Infrastructure Play
Merseytravel isn't chasing unicorn status—it's building the essential digital infrastructure for 1.5 million people. The real opportunity? Licensing this platform to other city regions. They've solved the hard problem: making public transport data accessible, searchable, and mobile-ready. Now they just need to package it.

Thank you to Andrea in the Mersey…
Thank you to Andrea in the Mersey Travel Office in Liverpool City Centre and the driver of the 18 bus who have looked after my dad who has dementia today, your help is so appreciated by the Brenna family.
Excellent customer service
I have always had absolutely brilliant customer service when calling to ask about a journey. They are always very knowledgeable and can't do enough to ensure you have a successful experience. I love Merseytravel
Lost orange I’d card replacement
I spoke to Sally on Thursday 4th April 24, I had lost my orange id card, she was very helpful and I received my new card Tuesday 9th April. Couldn’t have gone smoother.
Shitshow as usual
Nothing unusual. Liverpool combined region can't combine a public transport solution after 7.30 at night on boxing day. I live in the the Liverpool region but half of a mile of water means I am at the mercy of taxi drivers that try to charge £40 to get through the pipe. Steve Rotherham seems to be invisible at the moment. Leadership campaign imminent?

I got on the bus this morning and gave the seat a wipe down with a tissue as I could see it was dirty. After wiping down with the tissue, the amount of grime and dirt that came away is disgustingly disgraceful. It should be cleaned thoroughly with proper cleaning solutions on a daily basis. Thanks to the service my coat has grime lingering on it☹️
