Mylio: The Anti-Cloud Photo Revolution
How a $5M revenue company is challenging Google Photos by keeping your memories off the cloud
While Big Tech pushes every photo to their servers, Mylio bets on a radical idea: your memories belong to you, not the cloud. With 129K monthly visits and 44 employees, this niche player is quietly building a $5M business by solving a problem everyone feels but few have cracked.
"Mylio isn't competing with Google Photos on features—it's competing on philosophy."
The Privacy-First User Base
Mylio's traffic profile reveals a highly engaged, intentional audience. With 46% direct traffic—nearly matching organic search—users aren't discovering Mylio by accident; they're seeking it out. This suggests a loyal base that values local-first architecture over cloud convenience. The 44% organic share, driven by branded terms like 'mylio photos' (7.7K monthly volume), indicates strong brand recall despite being a niche player.
The Revenue Reality
At $5.1M revenue with 44 employees, Mylio generates ~$116K per employee—a respectable efficiency for a SaaS company. But the real story is in their positioning. They're not chasing the mass market; they're serving the growing segment of privacy-conscious users who refuse to surrender their photo libraries to tech giants. This is a classic 'David vs Goliath' play, but with a modern twist: they're not trying to beat Google at scale—they're winning on principles.
The Trustpilot rating of 2.5/5 from just 5 reviews tells a story of polarized experiences. Early adopters who buy into the privacy-first vision likely love it, while those expecting Google Photos-level polish may be disappointed. This is typical for products that prioritize ideology over mass appeal.
- Local-first architecture eliminates cloud dependency (and subscription fatigue)
- Cross-device sync without the cloud is their unique technical moat
- 44 employees vs. Google's 100K+ shows the power of focused execution
Mylio is betting the future on privacy
While others chase AI features and cloud dominance, Mylio's $5M revenue proves there's a sustainable business in saying 'no' to the cloud. The question isn't whether they can scale—it's whether their philosophy will scale faster than Big Tech's surveillance capitalism.

Loses Google Photo EXIF Data!!
Paid for a subscription hoping that this would be a great app to aggregate all of my photos. However, there are two two serious non-Mylio issues that will keep me from renewing. First, there is no widely used standard EXIF or otherwise, for face recognition. I have a hundred or more faces ID'd in more thousands of Google photos, and I don't want to go through this exercise again. But more problematic is that exporting Google photos for import into Mylio involves a "takeout" from google photos of many multi-Gb zip files with no imbedded EXIF data, so e.g., your location data and camera info is lost! Well, not completely lost as it's exported in a json file that Mylio does not import. So I stopped using Mylio.

I was really loving Mylio and the idea of it backing up my photos into one place was great as I have a truly huge collection. The Face Recognition is amongst the best I have come across so far too. But alas, I found all my drives filling up and that really was strange and Mylio turned out to be the culprit. I thought I had it setup to save to one place but I found every drive both inside and attached to my laptop had grown a Mylio directory and Mylio was in the process of choking each one. I tried to work out how to stop it but after a fair bit of googling and reading the Mylio helpfiles I gave up and deleted it and every Mylio directory I could find. I got the 4 SSD's (10tb's total) in my laptop back into use and a lot of space on the 4 external drives I had connected that weren't the one I thought I had allocated to be the backup drive. Overall I think I got about 14tb's back as Mylio was also backing up my backups which was probably my own silly fault I would give it 5 stars if that hadn't happened and just might try it again and be way more careful with the setup because I know what to look out for now. So if you are going to try it, set it up very carefully and point it at 1 drive that has space for all your images. Best to go buy yourself a new external or network drive for the purpose.
No More! Just answer me? They can’t? Not even with AI?
All I want to do and all I’ve ever wanted to do is transfer photos from one computer to another from my home to my business. Seems simple, yet I am not the only one and I have had tech savvy help. I’m so annoyed right now because I have to redo an entire file of pictures which took quite a long time. It’s in my old account at my house and I’ve never been able to transfer it even with professional help. I went in today to see if possibly. I might be able to get someone to answer my question even they’re AI….. nope. I finally understand I have to redo the work and definitely need to go elsewhere and already know where such an easy user-friendly site. What was I thinking sticking with Mylio??

MYLIO is an incredible junk-drawer of UI horror. Possibly the worst user experience since DOS pretended to have windows in 1989. Random controls in random places and every single UI element is a custom styled, cryptic mess. It's so very unclear whether you're in a folder, or a section and sometimes what those definitions even mean. Photo organization isn't hard, but MYLIO make it super cryptic to even know what context you're in. There's also too many out of the box lists (like categories) that you don't even have full control over. Why can't I delete the "family" or "family travel" categories in my BUSINESS account? C'mon MYLIO, this looks like beta-ware, not a decade old supposedly mature product.

Could have been a great app except that there’a NO customer service. The link to submit a query initially did not work. So I emailed. And someone initially replied but when their ideas of how to fix it didn’t work, I receive a response of “submit via the app”. This time it did function and I received an automated response that they usually get back within 24-48 hours. It’s been a week and still nothing. I tried following up and silence. This is the second time I’ve given them a try and I guarantee you it is now the last.
