Palmetto: The Solar OS Powering America's Grid
How a $478M-funded startup is building the infrastructure for the post-grid energy economy
While most solar companies fight over customer acquisition, Palmetto is quietly building the operating system for decentralized energy. They've raised nearly half a billion dollars to turn every American roof into a tradeable power asset. The grid is being unbundled—and Palmetto owns the rails.
"Palmetto isn't selling solar panels—they're selling energy independence as a service, powered by proprietary financing and grid management software."
The LightReach Model Changes Everything
Derek Heckendorn's LightReach division represents Palmetto's strategic masterstroke. Instead of fighting the high upfront cost problem head-on, they created a power purchase agreement (PPA) engine that turns homeowners into energy merchants. The 1,060 monthly searches for 'palmetto lightreach' signal growing market appetite. They're not just a solar installer—they're becoming the Stripe for distributed energy resources.
Brand Moat is Real
With 33,040 monthly searches for just 'palmetto' and 50% direct traffic, they've achieved rare brand supremacy in a fragmented market. Compare that to 2,330 searches for 'palmetto solar'—the brand is the category. This 14:1 brand-to-keyword ratio indicates they're winning the awareness war before customers even enter the consideration phase.
The company's tech stack reveals a modern, product-led approach: Tailwind CSS, PWA capabilities, and sophisticated tracking (GA/GTM) suggest they're optimizing conversion funnels like a SaaS company, not a traditional installer. The 41% organic traffic share is impressive in an industry dominated by paid acquisition.
- Political moat: Neil Chatterjee (ex-FERC Chairman) as Chief Government Affairs Officer signals serious regulatory positioning
- Capital innovation: Derek Heckendorn's dual role overseeing capital and LightReach suggests they're engineering financial products, not just hardware
- Trust gap: 2.7/5 Trustpilot from only 4 reviews is a red flag—either early-stage reputation or a customer experience problem brewing
The Bet: Infrastructure Over Installation
Palmetto is playing the long game—when every home becomes a power plant, they'll own the OS. The $164M revenue validates the model, but the $478M war chest proves investors see a platform monopoly in the making. The question isn't whether they'll succeed, but whether the grid can handle what they're building.

I never realized how practical solar was!
I never realized how practical solar was before I started working with Palmetto. They were able to design a system for my dad that will completely replace his power bill and he only has to put panels on his garage. The garage is covered by a tree that he is planning on removing, and Palmetto's software allowed him to virtually remove the tree to see what the system would produce if the tree was cut down! They offer 3 (really 4) payment options: cash (or financing through a third party (esp. good if you have a low rate HELOC), financing through them, and leasing with a Power-Purchase Agreement (PPA). Not every home is a good fit for solar - you might have too many trees, an old roof, too many slopes or dormers, ect. What is nice about Palmetto is if you sit down with them and you're not a fit for solar they don't try to force you into getting it. One rep. explained his job to me like panning for gold - you are trying to find the gold (the houses that would benefit from solar), you aren't trying to find rocks and turn them into gold, or turn the water into gold.
Scammers and Liars
The guy who got us to sign the dotted line told us it would be $2500 to break the contract at any time. Now, when we want to cancel, they say that that was only for the 10 day signing contract period. Never never get solar with this company. Complete scam. We’re on the hook for 25 years now.
Worst experience and got scammed
They have terrible customer service. I ended up being scammed with 2 contracts. One for $40,000 and the other $70,000. Had to pay $38,000 to break the contract. We weren't updated on anything, and they ended up forging our signatures on the contract. No upper management contacted us or got back to us to help us with the situation. Currently still paying the same price for electricity, the payment has not decreased with the solar panels. Worst experience we had with solar panels, do not recommend.
Charging me for services they are not providing
Charging me for services they are not providing. Solar Panels provided by Vivint Solar are billed via Palmetto. The panels are not producing as promised and I'm only getting a very small credit monthly for 20 panels on my roof which Palmetto charges me $147 plus tax for and for the 4th the panels only produced about a $13 credit on my electric bill. It was sold as producing 132% of my average usage. 4 months never got close so basically still paying my electric bill and Palmetto bill doubling my electric Palmetto passes me off to my electric company and Xcel Energy passes off to Vivint Solar no helps and now Palmento wants to bill be for a cancelation for a system that never worked.
