The Legacy of Laminate

How a 1977 invention still commands a niche market in 2024

Pergo invented laminate flooring in 1977, effectively creating the category. Decades later, they still own the brand association, but their digital footprint reveals a company navigating the gap between legacy reputation and modern e-commerce expectations.

"They invented the category, but the category might be outgrowing them."

The Traffic Paradox

With 23,374 monthly visits, Pergo's traffic is surprisingly modest for a category-defining brand. The 34% 'undefined' country traffic suggests tracking issues or fragmented international operations. The real story is the 46% organic search rate—people are searching for 'Pergo' specifically, not just 'laminate flooring,' indicating strong brand equity but perhaps weak conversion optimization.

The Revenue Reality

At $3.7M revenue with 19 employees, that's roughly $194K per employee—a remarkably lean operation for a hardware brand. This suggests either a licensing-heavy model or a direct-to-consumer focus that hasn't scaled. The lack of funding data implies profitability or bootstrapped survival, which in the hardware space is rare and notable.

Their keyword strategy reveals a split personality: 'Pergo' (5,530 volume) dominates, but specific queries like 'Pergo luxury vinyl plank cleaning' (210 volume) show they're fighting for relevance in categories they didn't invent. The 3.4 Trustpilot rating with only 53 reviews suggests either low engagement or a customer base that isn't digitally native.

  • Brand recognition exceeds digital presence
  • Lean operations suggest licensing over manufacturing
  • Strong organic search, weak conversion funnel
  • Trustpilot rating indicates customer experience gaps
No clear e-commerce strategy
Category-defining brand equity
Minimal social proof (53 reviews)
High organic search intent
Traffic growth appears stagnant
Lean, profitable operations
Tech stack is basic (no advanced CRO tools)
Legacy trust in home improvement space

The Legacy Trap

Pergo is a case study in brand persistence vs. digital relevance. They own the category name but seem stuck in the pre-internet era—profitable but invisible in the modern home improvement conversation.

The quality of the floor

I love the floor, because of its texture, colour, easy to clean and tolerates dogs walking on it without any scratchers visible.

Very nice floor and it was easy too put it in place. The only negative is that it feels a little slippery when using synthetic socks.

Do not install this Pergo product in Arizona

Do not install this Pergo product (or any of their products) if you live in the South West. I'm not sure why they even sell this in Arizona. Learn from our mistake. We live in Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix and a couple years ago we decided to remodel our house. We went to our local Lowes and found this brand new Pergo product which at the time was supposed to be their latest and greatest product. We really liked the look and feel of the planks and the label said it was waterproof. We were sold. We asked the Lowes flooring expert about acclimation and he told us as long as our house temperature was close to the same as the store we didnt really have to let it acclimate but Pergo recommends 48 hours. An IMPORTANT NOTE, all the important information you NEED to know is printed on the back side of the label which is located under the plastic that covers the package. Anyways, we made the purchase and actually let the flooring acclimate in our house for over a MONTH. We thought surly this would be long enough for any shrinkage to occur before we installed it. NOPE!!!!! Here is where its important to read the teeny, tiny writing on the back of the label. Its so small that even with my readers on I had to use my phone. The most important part for our installation and for anyone who lives in the S.W. is, "Laminate floor is suitable for use in climate controlled (35-65 RH and 60-85° F) indoor installations only". Well here in greater Phoenix area the relative humidity swings are greater than 35-65. We installed our flooring in the early summer where the humidity was in the 40-45% range. During the middle of the summer it climbed into the 50-55% range. Everything was looking GREAT, until the Fall and Winter where the humidity level drops down to the teens. We started to notice some small separation between some of the planks (not all) and then they got bigger and bigger to eventually gaps of 1/8 of an inch. WTF?!?!?!? We took photos, opened up a claim with Pergo through Lowes. They (Pergo) sent out a "flooring expert" to evaluate our installation. He confirmed that yes indeed there was major separation. He submitted his report to Pergo and they responded to our claim saying they were not going to do anything for us. Again, WTF?!?! If you are dead set on buying and installing this product do it in the winter when the humidity is low and the flooring has shrunk and make sure you give enough space for it to expand in the summer. And you might want to also buy a whole house humidifier to eliminate the humidity swings.
