ScotRail: Scotland's Digital Train Backbone
A deep dive into the tech and traffic behind the national rail service
ScotRail isn't just moving passengers; it's managing a massive digital ecosystem that processes over 1.1 million monthly visits. While the trains run on tracks, the business runs on a surprisingly modern tech stack that's quietly outperforming legacy competitors.
"ScotRail proves that public transportation can be a digital-first business when you stop treating websites as brochureware."
The Traffic Engine
With 64% of traffic coming from organic search, ScotRail has mastered SEO for travel. The domain ranks for 38,660 monthly searches for 'scotrail' alone, plus thousands more for route-specific queries. This isn't accidental—it's a calculated content strategy that turns Scotland's geography into search volume. The 1.47M backlinks suggest they've built a web of authority that most travel sites would envy.
Tech Stack Modernization
ScotRail runs on a surprisingly modern stack: Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, Ant Design, and Vite for frontend development. They've embraced Progressive Web Apps (PWA) for mobile experience and lazy loading for performance. This is a sharp contrast to many rail operators still stuck on legacy systems. The stack suggests they're building for speed and mobile-first users, critical for on-the-go travelers.
The revenue figure—$825.2M—tells a story of scale, but the Trustpilot rating of 1.7/5 from 1,081 reviews reveals the friction. This gap between operational scale and customer satisfaction is the classic infrastructure challenge: moving millions of people efficiently while making each individual feel heard. The digital experience seems to be bridging some of that gap, but the core service delivery remains a work in progress.
- Domain authority is massive (1.47M backlinks), creating a moat against competitors
- Organic search drives 64% of traffic, indicating strong SEO fundamentals
- Modern tech stack (Vite, PWA, Tailwind) suggests forward-thinking digital strategy
- 1.1M+ monthly visits show strong digital adoption in a traditionally analog industry
The Bottom Line
ScotRail is a digital-first infrastructure play trapped in a public service model. The tech stack is modern, the SEO is dominant, but the customer experience gap remains the critical challenge to solve.

Lovely member of staff
There was a really nice young man in Milngavie station today, very pleasant and helpful towards everybody.
Commending Scotrail Staff
Experience excellent. Escorted on wheelchair by assistance staff member Adam Wilson from train arriving at Waverley from Burton on Trent to train leaving at 1700 for Glasgow Queen Street, stopping at Bishopbriggs. He alerted staff at Bishopbriggs re my need of help on arrival. Luke, the ticket collector, helped me off the train with my case and Sandra , staff at Bishopbriggs Station, was waiting for me on the platform . My thanks to all these people.
They paid for the taxi 😃
I was trying to go to cambuslang but the weather was very bad so they made us get off at fauldhouse because the train terminated there and they paid for the Uber to cambuslang
On board service Edinburgh to inverness return
Just travelled from Edinburgh to inverness and back the following day, (5/12/25 and 6/12/25)Matthew was on board with the refreshment cart and he couldnt have been more pleasant. Even recognised us on our return journey and took time to find out the purpose of our trip. Thank you
Freezing, plus manky toilets
Hadn’t travelled on Scotrail before and had no preconceptions, but was disappointed. The train on the service from Dundee to Edinburgh at 18.47 on Saturday was freezing. It seemed to have aircon on in sub-zero temperatures outside. The service started in Dundee and was in the platform for some time, but the toilets were manky.
