Skyroam: The $79M Bet on Killing the SIM Card
How a travel tech company is winning the war against roaming fees with vSIM technology
Imagine landing in Tokyo, London, or Rio without ever swapping a SIM card or paying a roaming fee. Skyroam's Solis hotspots make this seamless connectivity a reality for millions of travelers, powered by their patented vSIM technology that's fundamentally disrupting the $100B+ global roaming market.
"Skyroam isn't selling hotspots—they're selling the elimination of one of travel's most persistent pain points: connectivity anxiety."
The vSIM Revolution
While traditional carriers fight over SIM card slots, Skyroam's patented virtual SIM technology bypasses physical hardware entirely. Their Solis devices connect to local networks automatically across 140+ countries, eliminating the friction of buying local SIMs or paying exorbitant roaming fees. This isn't incremental improvement—it's infrastructure-level disruption.
The Silent Scale
With just 2,494 monthly visits and a global rank of #6.6M, Skyroam's traffic numbers seem modest at best. But this reveals a critical insight: they're likely selling through B2B channels (airlines, hotels, corporate travel) and subscription models rather than direct-to-consumer web traffic. The 42% direct traffic suggests a loyal, returning user base that doesn't need to search—this is a retention play, not an acquisition play.
The Trustpilot rating of 1.9/5 from 2,305 reviews tells a starkly different story than their revenue numbers. While the business model scales financially, customer experience appears to be their Achilles' heel. This disconnect between financial success and customer satisfaction suggests either pricing power that outweighs service issues, or a captive B2B market that tolerates friction for enterprise-level convenience.
- Patented vSIM technology creates a defensible moat against traditional carriers
- B2B-heavy model explains low web traffic despite $79M revenue
- Trustpilot 1.9/5 rating reveals significant customer experience gaps
- 42% direct traffic indicates strong retention but weak acquisition funnel
The Silent Giant of Travel Tech
Skyroam proves that B2B infrastructure plays can generate massive revenue without dominating web traffic. Their real moat isn't SEO—it's enterprise partnerships and patented tech that makes physical SIM cards obsolete.

Fast Internet Worldwide
Fast internet worldwide, free 1gb data every month for Solis 5g units. Customer service is the best, no waiting time at all
Works, but could have better business practice
I've had two models of their hotspot devices: Solis model HS400000 and the Solis lite. I've traveled and used the devices in various states in the U.S., Mexico, Thailand, and Ghana. In every location, I was successfully able to get internet access. For the newer Solis Lite model, it took 5-10 minutes to find a connection. The connection speeds were decent enough for navigation and video streaming. As someone mentioned, the hotspot does work well, but it does not keep your devices connected for always on access. Example, if I connect to internet on my phone to the hotspot, put down my phone for a couple minutes, then use my phone again to access the internet, I have to reconnect to the hotspot again for internet access. It's a minor nuisance, but I can see this being useful so not to keep using up unnecessary data...maybe? The other thing mentioned from other users would be the surprise auto-renewal. I've been victim to this as well. If you subscribe to one of their data plans and forget about it, they will continue to charge you, even if you didn't use ANY of the data before renewal. What makes this bad business practice is the fact that they don't notify you via the app or email when your subscription's about to renew. I contacted their customer service via the app and they said an email gets sent, but it sometimes goes to spam...So they know consumers might not see their renewal notification. ALSO, that email is just a notification when they've already charged you the auto-renewal, it's not an email warning you BEFORE getting charged the auto-renewal... To make it even better (sarcasm), they do not allow refunds on "Data/Wifi Service plans that has been consumed. AUTO-RENEWAL FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE." Not the best business practice.
Complete scam
Complete scam. Never worked, no tech support, still fighting to cancel the monthly charge for a useless device. Deeply disappointed with the product and company.
Returned + canceled service - still no refund 2 months later
Paid $655.62 on 10/17/2025 for 2 wifi devices + service. Tried it, but it didn't work the way I needed it to work (i.e. when cellular is N/A). Returned all items within 30 days (11/12/2025) per their return policy using their prepaid label, and canceled the service. It's now 2 months later and I still don't have a refund. Tried contacting customer service several times (10+ times) via chat and email. I was told in writing that they would refund for the service plan and devices. Multiple customer service reps told me they were "assuring me" that my case would be "escalated", as apparently customer service has zero authority to facilitate refunds. Still nothing. They don't even respond to emails. Reporting to Better Business Bureau.
Warranty will not be fullfilled
Good luck getting any satisfaction if anything goes wrong with your device. The 1 year warranty means nothing to them. Abysmal customer service.
