Zearn: The $37M Math Platform That Won't Sell Data
Why 2 million monthly users trust a non-profit edtech over the venture-backed giants
In a market saturated with VC-funded edtech startups desperate for user data, Zearn quietly dominates with 2.1 million monthly visits and a $37M revenue model built on institutional subscriptions, not surveillance. This is the story of how a non-profit math platform beat the odds without selling out.
"71% direct traffic means Zearn doesn't need Google to find its users—its users actively seek it out. That's not SEO; that's brand equity."
The Silent Majority of Educators
While competitors chase viral growth, Zearn's 2.1M monthly users arrive primarily through direct navigation (71%)—a metric that signals deep institutional adoption. Teachers aren't discovering Zearn through ads; they're bookmarking it. The 20% organic search traffic reveals a brand that's become a category verb: 'zearn login' and 'zearn math' dominate queries, while misspellings like 'zern' and 'zean' capture 6K+ monthly searches—proof of brand saturation.
The Non-Profit Paradox
Zearn's $37.2M revenue contradicts the 'non-profit' label, but their model is pure mission-driven economics. They don't sell user data, don't run ads, and don't optimize for engagement metrics. Instead, they sell institutional licenses to schools and districts. The 205 employees aren't building features for retention—they're building for comprehension. This is edtech that treats teachers as customers, not students as products.
The tech stack reveals their priorities: Ruby on Rails for stability, Vue.js for interactive math models, and New Relic for performance monitoring. No growth hacking tools, no ad tech, no data brokers. Even their Trustpilot rating (2.6/5) tells a story—edtech platforms with perfect ratings are usually gaming the system. Zearn's mixed reviews suggest real educators with real frustrations, not manufactured positivity.
- Built for classrooms, not individual consumers—98.9% of traffic from 'undefined' country (likely US schools using district IPs)
- CEO Shalinee Sharma's background in education tech, not consumer apps, shapes the product philosophy
- Partnership-driven growth via Ashley Birsic's role—schools buy licenses, not subscriptions
- No viral loops or referral incentives—growth is purely through educational effectiveness
Zearn Wins by Refusing to Play the VC Game
While competitors chase scale, Zearn proves that educational impact and sustainable revenue can coexist—without selling user data or sacrificing teacher autonomy.

Very palatable rubbish.
I'm willing to bet that the person who uploaded this page did it just so they could 'dunk' on the developers. With a score of 3.2 as of writing this review, I believe the rating is incorrect because the only review is a 2nd grader yapping about how it "Sucks and is bad". Anyways, it would be good, if it wasn't an exact copy of the Eureka math books. Although fun in grades before 3rd, Zearn should only be be used every once in a while in 4th and 5th.
This is a useless website that claims to teach math.
This. Is. HELL. All it does is make me hate math more than I already do. Right after I had to use I-Ready for 5 years, I had to use this. While some other reviews simply say it's bad, and one said they were sad because it had no games. Really, the main issue is that this makes math more confusing rather than teaching students math skills like it claims it can do. If I had to describe Zearn in one word, it would be horrible.
Zeaen is buns it should be called burn
it does not have games and all it does is math
It sucks
It's so stupid and it made me mad.
