The Aon Paradox: A $12B Giant Running on Legacy
How a 54,000-employee behemoth dominates with minimal tech and massive backlinks
Aon is a $12B insurance brokerage giant with 54,000 employees, yet its digital footprint suggests a company operating in the shadows of the internet. With zero detected modern tech stack and a Trustpilot rating of 1.4/5, this isn't a tech company—it's an institutional fortress that happens to have a website.
"Aon doesn't compete on UX or innovation—it competes on scale, relationships, and the sheer inertia of being too big to fail in corporate insurance."
The Invisible Enterprise
Aon's traffic profile reveals a company serving institutional clients, not consumers. With 44% direct traffic and only 28% organic search, their customers aren't discovering them—they're already bought in. The 'undefined' country data suggests either anonymized tracking or a truly global footprint where no single market dominates. This is the hallmark of a B2B giant where contracts are signed, not clicked.
The Backlink Moat
2.4 million backlinks for a company with zero detected modern tech stack is telling. These aren't earned through viral content or cutting-edge SEO—they're the accumulated weight of decades in business. Every corporate client, partner, and industry directory links to aon.com by default. It's the digital equivalent of a physical headquarters that's been there so long, the city built around it.
The keyword strategy reveals their true focus: 'employment practices liability insurance' (88,640 monthly searches) and 'aon insurance' (7,970) dominate their organic footprint. They're not chasing broad awareness—they're capturing high-intent, specific commercial insurance queries where they have deep domain authority. This is surgical B2B marketing at scale.
- Revenue concentration: $12B from 54K employees = $221K revenue per employee (exceptional for insurance)
- Traffic quality over quantity: 1.4M monthly visits with high commercial intent
- Trust paradox: Low public rating but massive institutional trust (implied by revenue)
- Legacy infrastructure: Zero detected modern tech suggests heavy investment in proprietary systems
The Institutional Playbook
Aon proves that in B2B insurance, scale, relationships, and inertia beat digital innovation every time. For founders, this is a masterclass in building moats that aren't made of code.

I saw all these bad reviews on truth…
I saw all these bad reviews on truth pilot and thought - I will never get my money back. Here is my experience. Turned in a claim on Tuesday and got my money back on Thursday. AON exceeded my expectations. I was all set to start a war to get a refund based on what I saw here but AON did a great job!!!
Aon is a total rip off
Aon is a total rip off, never again will I go through them, had to cancel our Carnival cruise due to medical reasons and did everything they requested but still got our claim denied after giving us the run around. Aon insurance is a money grab crooked company, beware!!!
Travel Protection Plan
Travel Protection Plan - Reference # 900660451 Dear Sir/Madame, We have repeatedly told you that all the medical reports that caused us to miss this cruise have already been submitted. We have also spoken to all the medical providers concerned with my wife’s condition and they have expressed that they have already provided all the relevant details to you and fail to understand what else you would require!! As previously stated your actions, or lack of action, critically point to the fact that you are just delaying the payment of the amount due to us. Your continued delay in fulfilling your obligation emphasizes why no one trusts insurance companies anymore!! I would urge you to stop playing games and settle this claim We have also repeatedly requested that someone who can clearly speak English call us so we might reiterate our disgust at your behavior verbally
Really useless company
Really useless company. Do NOT use them. I paid an arm and a leg to insure my moving goods and they did not even accept my claim which wasn’t even much. Look for another insurance company. They are not worth your money, time or stress. Really disappointed because Biddulphs recommended them but that means I will also look for another moving company that works with company’s that are reputable. Biddulphs and AON insurance are no longer going to get my money.
MSD Animal health pension transfer…
MSD Animal health pension transfer nightmare! It took AON 6 months to undertake a simple pension transfer. This was triggered by me complaining about the poor customer service, so they told me to go somewhere else and started the transfer process without my consent. It is also worth noting that I lost around a third of my pension value when transferring out. This calculation was checked and endorsed by the Trustees as correct, so they seem to be okay with me losing a substantial amount of money. All through the transfer process AON did not acknowledge any mail/documents sent back. They were however consistent in setting unreasonable deadlines and time scales and putting hurdles in my way such as an Amber warning on the company I was transferring to. This was for offshore investments. A quick Google check on AON will show the same, I was even laughed at on the phone after explaining I was quite stressed by the experience and random timelines. I would never recommend this company to anyone. They are total and utter scum. I received a letter after the process had ended stating "We tried to keep things as straightforward as possible..." This is utter nonsense!!! I think Kafka based the Trial on your transfer system. If it were possible I would give them ZERO stars. Avoid, unless you are unlucky enough to have a pension scheme administered by them, in that case, good luck!
