char.gy: The EV Charging Disruptor You Haven't Heard Of
How a UK startup is quietly winning the street charging war with 94 employees and $13M in revenue
While competitors chase highway fast-chargers, char.gy is infiltrating the most mundane part of your daily life: the street lamp outside your house. With 94 employees and $13.2M in revenue, they're executing a land-grab strategy that turns urban infrastructure into charging real estate.
"They're not building charging stations—they're weaponizing the existing street furniture that already owns the parking spots."
The Lamppost Playbook
char.gy's genius isn't in the charger hardware—it's in the distribution model. While Tesla and Ionity build destination chargers, char.gy is installing AC chargers on existing lampposts and curbside infrastructure. This creates an impenetrable moat: they own the real estate that competitors can't easily replicate. Their traffic shows 19,627 monthly visits with 51% organic, suggesting they're capturing demand, not buying it.
The B-Corp Trojan Horse
Certifying as a B Corporation isn't just ESG signaling—it's a strategic moat in the UK's regulated EV market. With 100% renewable energy claims and 'Best Places to Work' accolades, char.gy is positioning itself as the ethical choice for municipal contracts. This matters when you're competing for council tenders and LEVI funding, where sustainability metrics can make or break a bid.
The financial picture reveals a company in aggressive growth mode. With $20.1M in funding against $13.2M revenue, they're spending heavily on expansion. The 2.6/5 Trustpilot rating from just 10 reviews suggests they're still early in customer experience optimization—likely prioritizing installation velocity over service polish. This is classic infrastructure playbook: scale first, perfect later.
- Leverages existing street furniture (lampposts) for zero real estate cost
- Captures 84% of traffic from 'undefined' (likely UK-dominated direct traffic)
- Subscribed to LEVI funding schemes for public charging infrastructure
- B-Corp certification creates regulatory and partnership advantages
- Top keywords show users asking about costs and competitor comparisons
The Quiet Infrastructure Monopoly
char.gy isn't selling charging—they're owning the parking real estate that makes charging inevitable. While others build networks, they're installing the infrastructure that becomes invisible, essential, and irreplaceable.

What a great product!
Easy to use and really clever technology being able to connect into existing services. Thumbs up from me. Love innovations like this. Went to visit a friend and they had one outside their house. So easy to connect and via the app was a couple of clicks and it was charging. Billed at the end and all was very affordable. Keep it up guys.
Engineer (Osman) came out and repaired…
Engineer (Osman) came out and repaired the issue, fast and efficient, well mannered too! These guys have alot of charge points around south london, however alot need updating (as advised by Osman). Please guys repair them asap as us EV owners need to keep going and most of us rely on your charge points.
After an initially good start I'm now massively disappointed
I previously said that I was happy with char.gy however I am now very disappointed with them. I have a company vehicle and my employer kindly provided me with an Electroverse energy card to enable me to pay for charging the vehicle. Previously, Char.gy had partnered with Electroverse and it was possible to use Char.gy charging points with an Electroverse card. I've just found out that this is no longer possible though because Char.gy no longer offer this provision. This means that I now will have to use an inconvenient charging point that's not that close to my house as the Chat.gy points can no longer be used with an Electroverse card. Char.gy are the same as all other companies. They do what suits them and the convenience of their customers are a low priority for them.
Thank you for your feedback Gary. We are proud to offer charging that requires no commitment and no hidden costs. If you follow the URL on the charge point and use Apple Pay, Google Pay or a credit card to pay as you go.
Char.gy shameful takeover
Char.gy recently took over most of the Shell/Ubitricity chargers in Teddington and, within just a couple of months, raised prices from 39p/kWh to 59p/kWh — a 50% increase. This comes at a time when wholesale oil and gas prices are falling and forecasts point toward a global recession, so there’s little justification for such a sharp rise. It’s also unlikely that Char.gy is paying the same electricity rates as a small corner shop (22–26p/kWh). And we’re talking here about 5kW lamp post chargers, which are relatively inexpensive to buy and install. For comparison, Tesla’s 250kW superchargers cost only 37p/kWh during peak times. Go figure. As for the 20% VAT argument (in reply below) — that’s not a valid explanation. Every business charges VAT. I used the service regularly before the price hike and was fine with it, even though the summary emails only showed the total cost in GBP rather than the actual kWh charged. But after this increase? No thank you. It feels like a shameful move that undermines customer trust.
Price gouging
After securing a monopoly contract with several local councils, this company started out with their “introductory rate” to make it seem like they were not here to rip you off and now has taken full advantage and has effectively price gouged all the local charge points on lamp posts. The rate has gone up to 60p per kWh and there is nothing you can do about it. Disgraceful business practice and the regulator needs to step in and do something about it
Unfortunately, due to the sky-rocketing cost of energy prices, the need for public charge point operators to charge 20% VAT and the costs required to keep the charge points always available, our prices have had to reflect our costs. We do offer a night rate tariff between the hours of 00:00 and 07:00 am which is as of July 2025, £0.39 /kWh. Please contact our helpdesk, [email protected] if you would like to discuss this in more detail, we would be happy to listen to your views.
