Cotopaxi: The $120M Outdoor Brand with a Conscience
How a B-Corp with 1.7M monthly visits is redefining the gear market
Cotopaxi isn't just selling backpacks—it's selling a movement. With 1.7M monthly visitors and a mission to fund sustainable poverty relief, this outdoor brand has cracked the code on commerce with a conscience, turning adventure gear into an engine for global good.
"Cotopaxi proves that purpose-driven commerce isn't a niche—it's a scalable $120M business model."
The Traffic Paradox
With 48% direct traffic and 42% organic search, Cotopaxi has built a brand that people seek out specifically—not just stumble upon. The 'cotopaxi' keyword alone drives 161K monthly searches, while their Allpa backpack series commands 9K+ monthly searches. This isn't accidental discovery; it's intentional brand building.
The Trust Gap
Here's the data that should worry investors: a 1.5/5 Trustpilot rating from 45 reviews. Despite 1.7M monthly visitors and $120M in revenue, the brand faces a significant perception crisis. This disconnect between traffic and trust suggests either a product experience issue or a vocal minority dominating review platforms—either way, it's a critical vulnerability.
The tech stack reveals a modern, performance-focused operation: Tailwind CSS, PWA capabilities, and lazy loading optimize for speed and mobile experience. With $87M in funding, they've scaled to 377 employees while maintaining a 35L backpack as their flagship product. The 'undefined' country data (81.8% of traffic) likely represents a US-dominated audience, suggesting international expansion is still untapped territory.
- B-Corp certification with 100% of profits funding poverty relief
- Allpa 35L backpack dominates search volume (7.4K monthly)
- Backlink profile of 95K—strong but not dominant for their scale
- Direct traffic nearly equals organic (48% vs 42%)—rare for DTC brands
The Bottom Line
Cotopaxi has built a $120M business on a premise that should be impossible: premium outdoor gear where every purchase fights poverty. The 1.5-star Trustpilot rating is the only red flag in an otherwise stellar growth story—proving that even mission-driven brands face execution challenges at scale.

Cotopaxi Travel Backpack
Bought a backpack from a verbal review of a colleague. Glad it showed up with some fun colours though the main external colour is dark green (not unlikeable). It’s a brilliant bit of organisation. Resembling a clam shell bag, it IS designed for travel organisation. Like don’t buy it expecting it to be like a work backpack. Although it does have a laptop space. Not heavy. There is still space to shove extra things in like a normal backpack, and outside zips for little bits and pieces you need while traveling. I liked it a lot. If I had to improve it I’d put wheels on it but they do have that hybrid product available. I like it a lot.
I’m not surprised at all the negative reviews
I’m not surprised, as I sit down to write this review, to see so many poor reviews of this company. I experienced a warranty issue with a jacket seam that ripped after owning the jacket for less than three months. I brought it to a Cotopaxi retail store, where I was told they could only exchange it for a jacket of lesser value, which was not acceptable—especially since I purchased the jacket directly from the Cotopaxi store. My only remaining option was to file a warranty claim, which I did. Unfortunately, the customer service experience was extremely poor. Responses were very slow, and communication was inconsistent. After a significant delay, my warranty exchange was finally approved and I was asked to confirm the size and color for the replacement jacket. I responded immediately with the requested information. Two weeks later, I requested a status update. After another two weeks passed, I followed up again. Two more weeks after that, I received an email stating that because I “had not responded,” they had issued me a gift card—despite the fact that I have email threads clearly showing my responses. While I did at least receive a gift card, it did not cover the full cost of the jacket due to taxes. This is completely unacceptable from a company that advertises a lifetime warranty on products that are priced at a premium. I am an outdoor enthusiast who regularly purchases high-quality gear, but due to both the product quality and the lack of adequate customer support, I will no longer be supporting this company.
Poor Quality
I was really disappointed with my experience given Cotopaxi’s reputation for quality and durability. I received a Fuego Down Hooded Jacket as a Christmas gift from my mother and had only worn it lightly. The outer fabric tore on the front after briefly catching on the edge of a wooden table — not sharp metal or anything extreme. I was genuinely surprised by how easily the fabric failed from what felt like very minor, everyday contact. I contacted customer support with photos, hoping at least for a repair or some goodwill support. While the response was polite, the damage was immediately classed as “accidental” and therefore not covered, with no offer of repair credit or contribution — just a referral to a third-party repairer at my own expense. I understand warranty limits, but for a premium outdoor jacket marketed for durability, I expected either tougher fabric or at least some goodwill when a lightly worn garment fails so easily. The jacket looks great, but this experience has made me question the real-world robustness and the aftercare support behind the brand
Lost package
I ordered an Allpa Travel backpack and they credited my account with 10% more than the checkout price.Thay weren't able to explain the reason. Furthermore, after waiting a month, the parcel tracking app tells me that the backpack has been delivered to its destination, but I haven't received anything! After two weeks of trying to resolve the issue with Cotopaxi customer service (pretty unresponsive) I have given up on the stolen money (more than a hundred..)
This company is absolute shit
This company is absolute shit. Their customer service is the worst in the planet. If one of your items gets lost in shipment or they don’t send it to you. They turn around and blame you. Absolutely the worst people are working there and the customer service is awful. I’m not sure if they changed ownership but it used to be a good company now it’s just shit.
