HarperCollins: The 200-Year-Old Tech Play
How a legacy publisher built a 1M+ monthly visit digital engine
HarperCollins isn't just publishing books; they're running a 19th-century brand through a 21st-century digital machine. With nearly 1M monthly visits and $1.9B in revenue, their website is the unsung hero of their empire.
"Their 1.8/5 Trustpilot rating proves they're not selling products—they're selling IP, and the tech stack is just the delivery mechanism."
The Silent Traffic Engine
HarperCollins owns the search intent for their own brand (18,880 monthly searches for 'harper collins'), but the real story is their 44% organic traffic. They're not just ranking for their name—they're ranking for authors, genres, and industry terms. With 5,659 employees and $1.9B in revenue, every click is a data point feeding a massive content machine.
The Tech Stack Paradox
Their stack is a fascinating contradiction: jQuery and Bootstrap (legacy) mixed with Tailwind CSS and Swiper (modern). It's the digital equivalent of a 200-year-old building with fiber optic wiring. They're not chasing the latest frameworks—they're optimizing for stability and scale. The result? A site that handles 1M+ visits without bleeding-edge tech.
The traffic split tells the real story: 41% direct traffic means readers are actively seeking them out. This isn't accidental traffic—it's brand equity converted to digital. When someone types 'harpercollins.com' directly, they're not browsing; they're transacting, researching, or engaging with a trusted publisher.
- Direct traffic dominance (41%) shows brand loyalty that most D2C brands would kill for
- Organic search at 44% proves they're playing the SEO game long-term, not just buying ads
- The 1.8/5 Trustpilot rating is irrelevant—they're not selling customer service, they're selling literary IP
- Their tech stack is 'boring' on purpose—reliability over innovation for a 200-year-old brand
The Unsexy Truth About Publishing Tech
Legacy brands don't need bleeding-edge tech—they need reliable infrastructure that turns brand equity into digital revenue at scale.

HarperCollins is one of the biggest and…
HarperCollins is one of the biggest and most respected publishing companies in the world. They have a rich history of publishing both timeless classics and modern bestsellers. Some of my favorite authors, like Agatha Christie and J.R.R. Tolkien, have their works published under HarperCollins. I really appreciate the wide range of books they produce—fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, and even religious texts. Their quality of printing and editing is usually excellent, and the variety of genres means there’s something for every reader. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that some of their editions (especially international ones) can be a little expensive compared to other publishers. Still, the content and quality often justify the price. Overall, HarperCollins is a trustworthy, diverse, and high-quality publisher that has shaped modern reading culture. I would definitely recommend books published by them to any book lover.

Publishers who support hateful authors
I will never support HarperCollins publishing as long as they support & publish authors like Victoria Aveyard. It’s not necessarily the things that she has said but it’s the hatred she has for fans who have a different opinion. Normally I’m someone that can put political disagreements to the side but she has lost it. The way she has treated fans who have supported her writing journey over the years is baffling. On her public profile she calls fans who disagree with her the “dog pile.” I cannot support a woman who reduces previous fans to such a disrespectful term all because they have a differing opinion. This is just one of many examples. I will not support any publishing company that condones bullying, harassment, and hate towards others. You’ve lost my business because of her.
