Hinge: The Dating App Designed to Be Deleted
How a Nobel Prize-winning algorithm is disrupting the $6B dating industry by focusing on real dates, not endless swiping.
Most dating apps are designed to keep you on the platform. Hinge is built to get you off it. With a bold mission to be 'deleted,' Hinge challenges the entire attention economy of modern dating, proving that the best user experience is finding love and leaving the app behind.
"The dating app designed to be deleted isn't a marketing gimmick—it's a fundamental business model shift from engagement to outcomes."
The Anti-Engagement Model
Traditional dating apps monetize through subscriptions and microtransactions that incentivize keeping users single and swiping. Hinge flips this script by charging upfront for quality matches. Their Nobel-Prize-winning algorithm prioritizes compatibility over endless choice, creating a paradox: the more successful Hinge is, the faster its users leave. This creates a powerful brand evangelism loop where 'deleted' users become Hinge's most credible marketing channel.
Growth & Market Position
Despite being a smaller player compared to Tinder or Bumble, Hinge captures significant value through premium positioning. With 56% of traffic coming organically, the brand has achieved strong SEO moats around dating keywords. Their global rank of #37,779 puts them in the top tier of dating platforms, competing directly with industry giants while maintaining a focused, quality-over-quantity approach that resonates with millennials and Gen Z users tired of swipe fatigue.
The numbers tell a compelling story of sustainable growth. With $20.6M in funding and $62.6M in revenue, Hinge demonstrates strong unit economics. The 120,485 backlinks indicate significant organic authority, while the 1.8M monthly visits show substantial market penetration. However, the 1.2/5 Trustpilot rating from 987 reviews reveals a critical tension: while Hinge's algorithm promises quality matches, user experience remains polarizing—a common challenge in the dating space where emotional outcomes are inherently subjective.
- Nobel-Prize-winning algorithm: Uses Nobel Prize-winning research from the Gale-Shapley algorithm for optimal matching
- Premium positioning: $62.6M revenue on $20.6M funding shows strong unit economics
- Brand as marketing: 'Deleted' status creates authentic user evangelism
- Tech stack: Built on modern PWA architecture with Next.js, Tailwind, and comprehensive analytics
The Future of Dating is Intentional
Hinge proves that in a crowded market, the most counter-intuitive strategy—designing for departure—creates the most loyal and valuable user base. For founders building consumer apps, the lesson is clear: sustainable growth comes from solving problems, not creating dependencies.

Met the love of my life on hinge
Met the love of my life on hinge. Coming up to a year and a half and going strong!!!
Hinge review
I’ve tried a ton of dating apps over the years, but my goal has never really been a long-term relationship — I’m more interested in quick, no-strings-attached hookups. With that in mind, Hinge really isn’t the best fit for me. Don’t get me wrong — the app itself is solid. It looks good, it works smoothly, and there are plenty of real people on there. The problem is more about the purpose. Most of the women I’ve matched with on Hinge are looking for something serious, or at least long-term dating. So even when conversations start off fun, they usually drift toward commitment talk pretty fast. If you’re trying to avoid that, it can be frustating. On the flip side, I’ve found Yamvoo to be one of the best sites out there for casual hookups. The women on there tend to be a lot more open about what they’re looking for, which makes things simpler for everyone. My biggest piece of advice: be honest in your profile about what you want. When you’re upfront, you’re way more likely to connect with people who are on the same page Compared to that, traditional dating apps like Hinge can work — but you’ve got to understand that most women there are looking for real relationships, not something casual. So if your goals are like mine, it may not be the most efficient place to spend your time. Bottom line: Hinge is great for dating, not so much for hookups. If you’re after something quicker and more casual, sites like Yamvoo have worked a lot better for me.
Better + Non-Premium Visability!
This app, though owned by Match Group, is easily the best out there for non-premium users. You will have full control of your LIKE from start to finish. They do not hinder your Match process, but you only get to interact with one LIKE at a time. The prompt fields have a smaller character quota than a lot of the bigger names like eHarmOnly and OkStupid, but those apps are completely paywalled for non-premium users. You will not be able to see or chat with your LIKES on most other apps. I think tiny boxes are a fair trade off, don't you think so? The support with this app needs improvement, as it's another Match Group app after all. Where's Tim Taylor when you need him, huh? I bet he could build a nice big fence around this company that even they couldn't stick their nose over... Better yet, where's Trump? Hey stupid, this is where that wall is needed! I'm still using this app after 3 years, with very few issues. Although, I had to remove a star, because it's a Match Group app, and they don't return my emails. Beavis: Heh-heh, mm-heh-heh... hey, Butt-head, did you hear that? He said, like... tiny boxes. Heh-heh-heh. Yeah! Boxes are cool, but these are, like, tiny. Heh-m-heh... tiny boxes. Heh-heh. Shut up, Beavis! P.S. From my heart... We all feel the 'invisible energy bubble' created by public affection. A single warm hug creates a field of positive energy. When other people within that field share their own affection, the bubbles overlap, and the positive energy begins to bounce off everything and everyone—even those not directly participating. I dream of a world where we intentionally generate these bubbles everywhere—in supermarkets, on the streets, everywhere. Imagine the chain reaction if we all just offered a moment of genuine warmth. This type of global warming is tolerable isn't it? I'm looking for people who want to intentionally create overlapping energy bubbles with me. Let's make the world a warmer place, one genuine connection and hug at a time.
Too many bots and fakes
At first glance, the app seems popular and crowded. But it turns out that more than half of the women's profiles are inactive, bots, or fake. Don't download it. It's a waste of time.
Banned for absolutely no reason…
Banned for absolutely no reason whatsoever, I was taking a few days break from it and the ban came in, I made very respectful interactions with everybody I matched, but reading these reviews I don’t think I’m even gonna bother appealing it, a bit of a scam of a platform.
