iRobot: The Vacuum That Became a Data Company
How a 30-year-old hardware brand built a moat with software, sensors, and a billion-dollar brand.
iRobot didn't just build a robot vacuum; they built a category. While competitors chase specs, iRobot owns the living room floor through a potent mix of brand equity, proprietary navigation tech, and a surprising moat: the data of millions of homes.
"iRobot's true product isn't a vacuum; it's the automation of a chore, sold as a subscription to convenience."
The Brand Gravity Well
The data reveals a dominant brand identity. With 324,940 monthly searches for 'irobot' and 188,600 for 'roomba', the company has effectively become the Kleenex of robotics. A staggering 48% of traffic is direct—users typing 'irobot.com' into their browser. This isn't SEO wizardry; it's decades of brand building and retail presence translating into digital intent. They don't just rank; they are the destination.
The Tech Stack Paradox
Despite being a hardware giant, their web presence is surprisingly agile. The site runs on a modern stack—Tailwind CSS, DaisyUI, and Bootstrap—indicating a lean, rapid-iteration marketing team. However, the reliance on jQuery and legacy frameworks hints at the challenges of integrating complex e-commerce systems with a 30-year-old enterprise backend. They are modernizing the frontend while the backend machinery churns out physical robots.
The Trustpilot score of 1.2/5 (based on 1,429 reviews) is the elephant in the room. It signals a massive disconnect between product promise and post-purchase support. For a company with $1.5B in revenue, this isn't just a blip; it's a structural vulnerability. As competitors like Roborock and Ecovacs catch up on hardware specs, iRobot's customer experience friction becomes a critical risk factor.
- The 'Roomba' Moat: 188k monthly searches for the brand name alone creates a defensive wall against generic 'robot vacuum' queries.
- High Intent, Low Friction: 48% direct traffic suggests high purchase intent and strong brand recall, reducing customer acquisition costs.
- The Data Play: With over 700k backlinks and proprietary mapping tech, iRobot sits on a treasure trove of home layout data that pure software companies would kill for.
The Verdict: A Titan Facing a Pivot
iRobot has won the mindshare battle. Now it must win the service war or risk being overtaken by agile hardware clones with better software support.

Worst iRobot Product
Hello, My name is Emmanuel. I brought an iRobot Roomba this June 2025 from Best Buy. First couple of weeks the Roomba worked fine. But after a month or so, it acts weird. Rotates in circles, does not go home, even though the area is plain, it says that it got stuck, Disconnects from the internet for every use. I am totally frustrated with this product. Never seen such type of irritating product. If any of the irobot customer services team or employees or sales team see this comment, please contact me. You can find my details in your database. THE WORST PRODUCT I EVER USED
Can't use unuaual characters in a password.
I bought this robot combo mop and vac less that a year ago and I had no problems at all until I got a new router and had to change the wifi password which is when this all started. After contacting customer service they told me my password for the router can't be used so sorry. They wanted me to change the password and That would take me 1.5 days to redo all of them again because they can't use a # in the password.
Lousy product worse customer service
Lousy product, worse customer service. The vacuum will not vacuum all mapped rooms. Customer service keeps passing me on to somebody else. Do not recommend!!
Do not buy from this company
Do not buy from this company. Since 2020 I have had the Roomba S9 and the matching Braava Jet mop which have been adequate. I have carefully cleaned and maintained them using only iRobot vacuum bags, rollers and brushes. Only to be told that they no longer make the right sized vacuum bags for my S9 to function. Be clear, my S9 still works 100%, but the company have decided that my iRobot has “reached End of Life”, and I must buy a new one, because they no longer make the right sized vacuum bags for it to operate. This is outrageous built in obsolescence by a company favours profit over the planet. In addition to this, the app never worked very well snd often I’d just start the units without the app. The actual clean was ok, if a bit irregular. Good thing I’m no perfectionists so it didn’t really bother me. The new replacement iRobot’s are ugly, plasticky, cheap and nasty looking, and you can be sure I will never be buying anything from a company that places profits over their customers and the planet. If you do buy, your unit will not work more than a few years before they decide to shut it down (whether it works or not), forcing you to buy a new one.
Worse customer service ever
Worse customer service ever, the lens broke and I paid 1200 dollars for a unit and it doesn't even do what it's supposed to
