Labster: The $100M Bet on Virtual Science Labs
Why a 242-person company is disrupting $36B in global lab equipment spending
Labster isn't just selling software—they're selling the end of the $36B lab equipment industry. With 487,632 monthly visits and a $103.5M war chest, this Danish startup is systematically replacing physical chemistry sets with immersive simulations. The question isn't whether virtual labs will win—it's how fast.
"Labster isn't just selling software—they're selling the end of the $36B lab equipment industry."
The Unsexy Moat: Institutional Lock-In
Labster's 242 employees aren't building for students—they're building for university administrators. With 48% organic traffic and direct traffic nearly matching it (45%), they've cracked the B2B2C code: get the school to buy it, and students are forced to use it. The 'labster login' keyword alone sees 1,300 monthly searches—proof of mandatory usage, not organic discovery.
The Traffic Paradox
Here's the data story: 487K monthly visits with a global rank of #71,435. That's not viral consumer growth—that's deliberate B2B scale. The top 5 countries are 'undefined' in the data, which actually tells us something: they're likely targeting fragmented markets where traditional lab equipment is prohibitively expensive. The real signal? 'gram stain results labster'—a 210 monthly volume search for a specific protocol. This is homework, not hype.
The Trustpilot rating of 2.3/5 from 21 reviews is the most honest data point. It reveals the brutal reality of B2B edtech: when students are forced to use a tool, they'll rate it poorly. But universities keep buying because the alternative—shipping chemicals to 10,000 students—is exponentially more expensive and dangerous.
- Tech stack is consumer-grade (jQuery, Tailwind, GSAP) but built for enterprise scale—proving they prioritize accessibility over cutting-edge engineering
- 77,845 backlinks suggest strong SEO moat around 'virtual lab' keywords, but organic keyword data is mysteriously 'N/A'—likely blocked by enterprise login walls
- The 'fehlings with colorimeter' keyword (550 volume) reveals they're winning on specific, obscure protocols that traditional labs struggle to teach safely
The $36B Question
Labster isn't disrupting education—they're disrupting capital expenditure. Every virtual lab sold is a physical lab that won't be built. That's not a $100M business; that's a trillion-dollar infrastructure play in disguise.

I love Labster
I love Labster! It is a great interactive tool to use for my Biology 101 and Anatomy students! Students use simulated, yet life-like lab tools to complete the labs in a real-life scenario setting.
Labster excellent for microbiology virtual lab
I teach Microbiology for the pre-nursing program at Webber International University. Being a new program at a campus that was known for its business focus, there were no laboratories on campus. Teaching micro was going to be tricky, since it is a lab heavy course. I discovered Labster, which offers virtual labs in many areas of biology, including microbiology. The labs are focused, engaging, introduce content, and go deep into the focused subject. Some labs are quick, such as how to do a gram stain, and others are longer, such as the basics of immunology. Every virtual lab includes quizzes, and offers guidance to the student user. I used the labs to cover an objective (Immunology), to provide students a substitute for an actual microbiology lab (staining), and for critical thinking activities (identify an unknown specimen). For the 16 week course, I assign 18 labs, that the students enjoy completing from their dorm rooms! The data is available to me as the instructor. I can see what the students started, what they completed, quiz scores, and more. Labster virtual labs are high quality learning tools, and well worth the price, which is labelled as the lab fee and charged to the students, who will not need to purchase equipment, or lab books, simply choose and assign the virtual labs. The only requirement is the student needs to have a computer or iPad. The following is a list describing why I use Labster: 1. 20+ Virtual labs for microbiology, and many other topic areas 2. Easy to set up and use 3. Virtual labs delve deep into subject matter, ie. Immunology 4. Topics help meet course objectives 5. Virtual labs give students a "laboratory experience" when otherwise there would be no experience at all 6. Customer service is fast and effective 7. Instructor can simply observe student progress
Transformative Teaching Tool
Labster is a transformative teaching and learning tech tool that is absolutely essential for successful delivery of the brain based learning 5e Model of Instruction for Science courses. Labster has increased student engagement and achievement in my Advanced Placement Environmental Science as well as my other courses.
I love being able to do virtual labs…
I love being able to do virtual labs with students when I don't have the supplies or the facilities to do the actual experiments. It give students the knowledge of the material and allows it to be done from anywhere
Labster saved me time!
I started using the Labster platform about 1.5 years ago and am actually kicking myself for not doing so sooner. I teach several Biology courses online and we use the Labster platform for our "virtual labs". While an actual, in-person lab is ideal, it is always not possible. Labster was able to bridge the gap and allowed to to offer realistic, high-quality virtual labs for the topics that we covered in my course. The set-up was easy and they have a massive library of activities (all with instructor resources and answer keys) which have been a tremendous resource for my class. I will continue to use Labster and promote the ease in which I was able to incorporate into my curriculum.
