Literati: The $32M Bet on Curating Childhood Reading
How a book club startup is disrupting the $2B school book fair industry
While Scholastic has dominated school book fairs for 100 years, a 218-person startup is quietly building a $32.8M alternative. Literati isn't just selling books—they're weaponizing data to personalize reading for the next generation.
"They're not competing with Amazon—they're competing with boredom."
The Dual-Audience Machine
Literati's genius lies in its two-sided marketplace. Schools get frictionless book fairs that raise funds ([email protected] is their revenue engine), while parents get curated subscriptions. The 57% direct traffic suggests strong brand loyalty—parents aren't just browsing, they're returning. With 218 employees, they're scaling faster than traditional publishers.
The Data Moat
Their keyword strategy reveals their playbook: 'book subscription for a 12 year old girl who reads a ton' (290 monthly searches) shows hyper-specific targeting. Unlike Scholastic's one-size-fits-all approach, Literati's Chief Algorithms Officer Daragh Sibley is building personalization at scale. The 33% organic search traffic proves they're winning discovery.
The Trustpilot rating of 2.9/5 from 39 reviews is their Achilles' heel. While their tech stack (Swiper, Tailwind, Google Analytics) is modern, customer satisfaction lags. This isn't a product problem—it's an operational scaling problem. With $52M in funding, they have runway to fix it, but the clock is ticking.
- Disrupting the $2B school book fair industry with tech-first logistics
- Building a data moat around reading preferences for Gen Alpha
- Dual revenue streams: B2B (schools) and B2C (parents)
- Top 250K global rank with minimal marketing spend
The Scholastic Playbook, Reimagined
Literati is proving that in the age of algorithms, human curation at scale is the ultimate competitive advantage. The question isn't whether they'll scale—it's whether traditional publishers can catch up before they own the entire childhood reading ecosystem.

I really appreciated that the Literati…
I really appreciated that the Literati Book Fair focused on books rather than toys. It’s refreshing not to have kids come home with pointers or gadgets that have nothing to do with reading. I intentionally waited a couple of months to write this review so I could see how the books actually held up. Not only are my kids still asking to read their book fair books, but they’re also in excellent condition despite frequent use. That combination of quality and genuine excitement for reading really stood out to me.
Thanks for sharing, Dan! You are not alone on the pointers. 🩵 We are thrilled you had such a good experience with us and even more thrilled that your books are holding up, both in terms of their durability and appeal. The books sold on our fair are trade editions, the same you would find in any bookstore.
Real books, not trinkets. We love Literati!
We've hosted Literati fairs for three years now, and each one runs more smoothly than the last. The consistency matters- I know what to expect, the set up is easy, and our families look forward to it every year. What I appreciate most is that Literati focuses on real books, not trinkets and toys masquerading as a book fair.
Thank you for sharing, Violet! We love to hear it. Providing real books on our fair and guiding kids to quality is so important to us, so thank you for noticing (and for trusting us with your fair year after year)! Here's to many more smooth setups and excited families. 📚
We LOVED our Literati Book Fair
We LOVED our Literati Book Fair. My 2nd grader loved shopping on his own like a big kid and was so excited to find new books to bring home. He especially loved showing me which books his teacher picked out for her classroom from her own wishlist. My older son, who’s in 4th grade at the next school up was still able to shop the fair too, which was a big win for us. As a parent, I liked knowing the books were good quality and not something that would fall apart quickly or come with a toy attached. I was obsessed with shopping the online fair too... so many books!! It just felt easy and refreshing.
We love you right back!!! This is the stuff that keeps us going—kids feeling independent, siblings shopping together, parents feeling proud of the quality, teachers getting books through wishlists. This made our whole week. Thank you! 📚
Friendly and Efficient Customer Service Team
We tried the book scubscription service via a promotion through our school, which we loved! We canceled because it was out of our price range, and were accidentally late turning in our last box and had to contact customer service. Sarah helped us get the box in the mail and notated our account for when it returned. They were very friendly and accessible via phone, and quick to respond via the webform, too, when Amber reached out because we had an additional issue. Sarah and Amber made a stressful situation less so, and I hope one day we can afford to participate in the book box subscription again. I've recommended it to all my friends with young readers.
Hard to cancel
I'm two boxes in and so far my kid doesn't like any of the books. You can only provide feedback on the book and there isn't anywhere else you can provide general feedback on what types of books your child likes (other than the swiping). so i think it would just take a long time for the selections to be curated for your child (if at all...). and then when you want to cancel, you have to chat with someone and they take a long time to respond, then they try to convince you to stay. they definitely dont make it easy for you to cancel which is really really annoying. if you have a good product, you shouldn't have to trap people into keeping their subscription.
