Melodics: The Duolingo for Drum Machines
How a 29-person team built a $2.8M music education platform with serious stickiness
While everyone chases the next AI breakthrough, Melodics quietly built a 234k monthly visit music education empire by gamifying the tedious grind of finger drumming. They're not selling courses—they're selling muscle memory.
"Melodics cracked the code: make practice addictive, and the revenue follows."
The Niche That Pays
Melodics targets a specific tribe: electronic musicians who own pad controllers, MIDI keyboards, and drum machines but lack structured practice. With 234k monthly visits and 42% direct traffic, they've built a brand so strong that users type 'melodics' 10,820 times monthly—more than half their total search volume. This isn't accidental traffic; it's a cult of practice.
The 29-Person Powerhouse
At $2.8M revenue with just 29 employees, Melodics generates ~$96k per employee—remarkable efficiency for an edtech company. Their tech stack (Next.js, Contentful, AWS) and lean team suggest a focus on product over headcount. Founder Sam Gribben's strategy: build a sticky product that sells itself, then scale deliberately. No VC funding needed.
The real genius? They're competing with Drumeo (22.8k monthly searches) by owning the electronic musician niche. While Drumeo focuses on acoustic drums, Melodics owns the digital workspace—where Ableton Lives and Novation Launchpads live. Their 45% organic traffic proves SEO isn't just about keywords; it's about owning a category.
- Real-time feedback loops create instant gratification (the 'seriously satisfying' promise)
- Gamified progress bars tap into dopamine-driven learning
- Song tutorials for popular tracks keep users returning
- Cross-platform compatibility (drums, keys, pads) maximizes addressable market
The Silent Giant of Music Edtech
While Udemy and Coursera fight for general learners, Melodics owns a $2.8M niche with 29 people. Their real moat? Making practice addictive.

Prompt Resolution to Billing Issue
Originally disappointed to find out I’ve been charged £131.88 after a free trial. I signed up to try the software after purchasing a new Roland drum kit and whilst impressive it is a tad too expensive right now. I reached out to Melodics to seek a refund and received a friendly and prompt response. Money back in my account in less that 24 hours. I will be signing up to the software when I am able to commit more time to learning the drums. During the trail I found the software very enjoyable.
Hey Kit, we received your message. Please note it can take some time to reply over the weekend — sorry about that. While Melodics trials are auto-renewing by default, we're happy to process a full refund for you seeing as you were not intending to renew.

I received a free 30-day trial of Melodics.com with my purchase of the Alesis Nitro Max E-Drum Kit from Guitar Center. Honestly, I didn’t even realize it was included until I started going through the freebies, but I’m glad I did—it’s an awesome tool for beginners. The software is super easy to use, and so far, I haven’t run into any issues. The structured lessons and feedback make learning fun and engaging, especially for someone just starting out. That said, the pricing is a bit steep at $180 per year. I’d personally prefer a one-time lifetime purchase option instead of a recurring subscription. Since drumming is a hobby for me rather than an investment, I might only subscribe for a year and then cancel. Overall, if you’re new to drumming and want a guided way to improve, Melodics is a fantastic resource. Just be mindful of the cost if you’re not planning to stick with it long-term.
Exceptional Musical Education Product!
I'm blown away by the exceptional musical education content, delivered via a first-class technology suite of applications. These link effortless to either your controller, electronic drumkit or pads. No stone is left unturned on the journey to getting you proficient at either the keys, pads or drums. This is definitely the tool for the modern musician, I'm glad I found it through Arturia. Thanks!!!
steals your money and don't cancel…
good company was some issues with double charging though but i highly recommend this if you struggling with music theory (i didn't hence why i unsubscribed) if you looking for something more technical and more advanced i highly recommend to look into more sight reading based apps. but if you total beginner slight beginner medium level. i highly recommend melodics the thing i used the most is actually their interval and scale excersizes nice with a visual guide for how you should use your fingers in order. you will highly regret that later in your piano career if you skip to not learn that properly. another good thing is that they force you kinda to use the metronome. one thing i don't like about melodics is that the ideas is written sideways not vertical and i think that is a huge problem when you start playing with both hands. another thing that would be smart to add as a feature would be simple rhythm notation and notes alongside it so a person can review their playing tradiotionally and later transfer over to more advanced stuff. with melodics and this type of learning it is more muscle memory only and most people can't learn complicated pieces with that unless they are prodigys. but since melodics is mainly advertised to producers and total beginners i will still highly recommend this app. are you a person that are not looking to go much further than simple hiphop edm or dubstep (which is much more sound design than actual technical playing) then i highly recommend this app. are you looking to learn more soul rock metal other genres like that i will still recommend it for the most basic beginner stuff, but there are many techniques melodics won't cover.
Signed up after a free trial!
I had a free trial with my new Roland drum kit, which has really helped (I'm a returning drummer after about a 25 year break, so I'm back to basics. I signed up to the premium which is giving me lots things to practice to re-establish some skill! It's easy to use and I think a good price
