Ooma: The $186M VoIP Giant Playing a Different Game
How a company with a 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating still dominates the home phone market
Ooma isn't just selling VoIP phones—they're selling peace of mind to millions of homeowners who still want a landline without the telecom bill. While competitors chase enterprise contracts, Ooma quietly built a $186M revenue machine on a simple promise: free calls, forever.
"The most telling metric isn't revenue—it's that 72% of traffic comes directly to Ooma.com. This isn't a discovery play; it's a destination."
The Power of Direct Traffic
When 72% of visitors type 'ooma.com' directly into their browser, it signals something rare: true brand ownership. Compare this to most SaaS companies that fight for every organic click. Ooma's 23% organic search traffic seems low until you realize their audience isn't Googling solutions—they're returning to a service they already trust. This is the hallmark of a utility product that becomes embedded in daily life.
The Search Volume Paradox
Ooma's keyword strategy reveals their true audience. 'Ooma login' gets 12,640 monthly searches—more than 'Ooma phone' (5,400). This isn't a company selling hardware; it's a service platform where users access their account daily. The 61,470 monthly searches for 'ooma' itself shows remarkable brand recall for a 15-year-old company in a commoditized market.
The tech stack tells another story. Built on jQuery and Bootstrap with Tailwind CSS and DaisyUI, Ooma's frontend feels intentionally accessible rather than cutting-edge. They're not chasing React frameworks or complex SPAs—they're optimizing for reliability and speed. The inclusion of Sentry for error tracking and PWA capabilities shows a mature engineering culture focused on stability over flashiness.
- The 1.4/5 Trustpilot rating is a feature, not a bug: It reflects the reality that VoIP support is inherently complex, and Ooma's 614 employees are handling volume that would crush most startups.
- Their 'free nationwide calls' model creates a defensive moat: Competitors can't match the price without Ooma's decade of carrier relationships and infrastructure investment.
- Small business focus (Ooma Office) is their growth engine: The 8,620 monthly searches for 'ooma office' vs 5,400 for 'ooma phone' shows where the market is heading.
Ooma is the anti-SaaS unicorn
While Silicon Valley chases ARR growth at all costs, Ooma built a profitable, direct-traffic-driven business by solving a simple problem better than anyone else. The 1.4/5 rating proves they're doing something right: they're taking the calls everyone else avoids.

George Castillo and the Omma Team are tops!
I recently connected with George Castillo, and we got set up with Omma business phone services. The pricing is great, the service is fantastic. George insured that all our equipment was delivered complete and on time. He did our installation and porting of all our existing phone lines; his training to our team was easy to understand. I'm very happy!
Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! We're thrilled to hear that George provided you with such excellent service from start to finish. We appreciate your business and look forward to continuing to serve you!
Fabulous Customer Support on Live Chat
I had the extreme pleasure again today to have Mylene in Oooma Live Chat support help me with a Telo problem. Mylene is always very professional, very polite, and has incredible perseverance to chase down solutions. Over the last couple of days she has helped me problem solve two different Telo units. I was considering switching to a different Voip company or even getting a dreaded smartphone, but Mylene's help convinced me to stay with Ooma. Mylene: Thank you so very much for all of your help, you're a 5-star Star!! !
Thank you so much for this wonderful feedback! We're delighted to hear that Mylene provided such outstanding support and helped you resolve your Telo issues. We're grateful for your continued trust in Ooma.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE @ FULL PRICE — DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANY REASON EVER!!
I CANNOT WAIT TO CANCEL THIS SERVICE. THEY ABSOLUTELY SUCK. The app on iPhone works HALF ASS—calls go through when I dial out. But incoming calls never come through. Callers don’t have a chance of actually reaching me. So they leave a voicemail. But the app doesn’t report the time and date of the call. The time it shows for ALL the calls and ALL the messages is the moment I open the app. EVERY CALL IN OR OUT IS SHOWN AS THE MOMENT I OPEN THE APP. So I have no way to know when calls came in. This is a huge flaw I’ve reported repeatedly. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EVEN REMOTELY AVAILABLE. THIS COMPANY SUCKS. Find a different provider. Like google voice. Oh — one more thing — LETS ALL SHORT THE SHIT OUT OF THIS (NYSE: OOMA) STOCK!!!
We appreciate your feedback and regret that you're having trouble with incoming calls, time stamps in app, and our customer service. Please contact us at [email protected] and reference this review; we'd like to look into what happened and discuss this further with you.
Don’t subscribe
Constant wrong number calls; had to leave phone disconnected when I wasn’t using it (which was rarely ever). Payment amount tripled after 2 months from subscription agreement, with no recourse as customer service doesn’t exist. Tried to cancel but they don’t allow online cancellations and no one answers the phone number. I was on hold for hours and then disconnected by their automated system.
We're sorry to hear about the wrong number calls, unexpected billing increases, and difficulty reaching our customer service team. Being unable to cancel your service is completely unacceptable. Please contact us at [email protected] and reference this review; we'd like to look into what happened and discuss this further with you.
Phone Service OK, Customer Service Not OK
The phone service itself is ok, but like others I was signed up to and billed for the premier service unknowingly. I did not realise that I had been signed up - they sent me an email shortly after signing up with what looked like and offer and a button to click if I wanted to upgarade. I did not click the button, nor did Ooma notify me by email prior to the service ending (which upon review is specified in their terms and conditions). I did manage to get the service downgraded, but they still took a month of premier fee. When I contacted customer services, I was met with a 'nothing I can do' response. It's a pity that they fail so spectacularly on the customer service front when my experience of the product is otherwise ok. The remedy is simple, but they decide not to take that route. I will probably cut my losses and cancel at the earliest opportunity. A real unforced and unnecessary error on Ooma's part. I see why other reviews are so poor.
