Overstock: The Relentless Reinvention
From dead stock to blockchain gambles, a case study in survival
Overstock isn't just a retailer; it's a tech experiment wrapped in a furniture catalog. While competitors burned through VC cash, Overstock survived by pivoting from liquidation goods to blockchain empires—and back again.
"Overstock proves that in e-commerce, survival isn't about perfection—it's about the willingness to burn your own playbook."
The Traffic Paradox
With 6.7M monthly visits and a 7,500 global rank, Overstock commands serious volume. But the real story is in the source: 62% direct traffic. This isn't SEO magic; it's brand equity built over two decades. Users type 'overstock' into their browser, not Google. That's a moat. Yet, with only 30% organic search traffic, they're vulnerable to algorithm shifts and new entrants who master discoverability.
The Trust Deficit
A 1.2/5 Trustpilot score from 2,119 reviews is a flashing red light. For a company with $354M in revenue, this suggests a fundamental disconnect between customer expectations and delivery. In the home & garden space, where purchases are high-consideration and high-cost, poor sentiment isn't just noise—it's a growth ceiling. Founders, take note: you can't scale your way out of a trust problem.
The leadership team—spearheaded by CEO Jonathan Johnson and CMO Elizabeth Solomon—has steered the ship through crypto gambles and retail pivots. With 1,613 employees, they're lean for their revenue scale, but the recent rebranding and strategic refocus suggest a trimming of fat. The $16.4M in funding is negligible for a company of this size, signaling a shift from venture-backed growth to self-sustaining operations.
- Brand recall is their strongest asset (62% direct traffic)
- Heavy reliance on branded search limits new customer acquisition
- Trustpilot score indicates operational or fulfillment issues
- Lean team structure suggests high operational efficiency
The Ultimate Pivot Playbook
Overstock's survival proves that in e-commerce, adaptability beats optimization. Their journey from dead stock to blockchain to home goods is a masterclass in strategic reinvention—flawed, but undeniably resilient.

Scam City, No Accountability
I ordered a recliner for my 5 year-old. Took the day off work to make sure I was home for the delivery. The day goes by and I happen to check my email and it says the chair was delivered. I live in a secure building so I knew they had left the box outside without buzzing my unit. Sure enough, there was a picture of the box left outside the building as "proof of delivery." I go to retrieve it and it's nowhere to be found. The package had been sitting out there for hours. I called and called and kept getting the runaround. I emailed and got no response. How is it a successful delivery when you don't even bother to knock or ring a bell to a complex? How is that acceptable? I'm still waiting on a response from these people. It's been months.
Buyer be aware!!!!
Buyer be aware!!!! Their return policy is unjust and unfair. Over the years I've placed several orders with Overstock.com without a problem, no returns. For the first time an return was necessary, they gouged me with 20% deduction from refund. I no longer want to do business with Overstock.com or any of it's affiliates'.
DO NOT order from this company!!
DO NOT order from this company!!! Overstock used to be a good company, but no longer. I ordered a rug that was so cheap(didn't look anything like the picture) and they are charging $25 to return it. From now on I will order from AMAZON.
Shoe problem
I ordered a pair of shoes as a Christmas gift, they sent me two left shoes! I have never ordered from them since that time. Would not recommend. They need to check their merchandise before shipping it.
